For Cyn427 - Urban Nature in my hallway

I didn't want to highjack Beth's thread with my photos, so thought I'd post them here. This is the as-yet-to-be-painted side of the hallway, which I'll tackle tomorrow:

And here is the BM Urban Nature side that I completed today:

Pics taken with the ol' Blackberry don't quite do the color justice, but I am very pleased with the depth that the new color provides in this space. The artwork seems to stand out better now.

Looks lovely! My goodness you sure have been busy painting. Do you want to bring some of that energy to my house? I have several rooms that are literally crying out to be painted!

VirgilCarter, This is an off-topic comment on how terms vary from place to place: What you're calling a shotgun house has another name in this area: We call it a dog-trot because a dog could trot through the two portions of the house, and middle-class farmers -- like my family -- built them. I knew of some when I was a kid (before everyone had air conditioning), but to the best of my knowledge the dog-trots have all been filled in now. They're a throwback to another era. What WE call a shotgun house is a tiny, three-room house, probably located in what we call "Mill Hill", a village of tiny houses built by the textile mills. Back in the days before minimum wage, the mill provided free housing to all its workers, and the "Mill Hill" was close enough that workers could walk to work /return home for lunch. Workers who put in X number of years received a pension and had their house free 'til the day they died. Wages were very low, but the workers didn't have many expenses either -- they had their houses, they didn't get bills for their utilities, and they didn't need to own a car . . . on the other hand, workers were essentially "trapped" by the mill. With no way to save, who could afford to walk away from the mill job? The only people who could realistically leave were men who joined the military. This system ended when minimum wage was instituted; the mill couldn't provide the houses AND a decent wage. Okay, I'm definitely off topic . . . What we call a shotgun house is probably about 600 square feet. From a small front porch, you'd enter the living room. A door would open directly to the only bedroom. On one side of the bedroom there'd be a staircase to an attic bedroom (shared by all the kids) and a tiny bath under the stairs. Another door would open directly to the eat-in kitchen. There'd be both a front and a back porch. No hallways whatsoever. All rooms had windows on both sides, which provided good breezes (this is the South). Today those old houses are snapped up /rennovated by people who rent them through HUD or other low-income rental programs. Few people would choose to live in these houses.

Does she live on Lombard Street by any chance? There was (and still is, to some degree) a tendency to convert Philadelphia basement spaces to living spaces because there are a lot of "English Basements" meaning half above ground with decent sized windows. I lived in a unit a few blocks away that had a basement bedroom and although it had decent windows, the bedroom still got limited light. I now live in a conventional unit but it still has two interior hallways and bath, and the kitchen is mostly interior space. I also stopped going to the Philadelphia Home Show because it became very suburban oriented,--- gigantic furniture, and patio materials, vinyl siding and windows, and enormous hot tubs have little to do with an urban core of 19thc. brick houses with yards that approximate 12'-15'x6' if that. The key is going to be choosing colors that look good under artificial light, and having a lot of artificial light sources. Many yellows, which seem like they would brighten up a room, look pretty dingy when lit artificially, especially by ceiling fixtures. Do not depend on a central ceiling fixture for most of the light. Actually my apartment only had one ceiling fixture in an interior hallway, and the room was also a soft tan/yellow that looked great in the upstairs that got a lot of natural light...it was horrible. It was set up as my office area and I never used it because of the central fixture and the way the color felt.The other rooms required multiple lamps due to the complete lack of "built in" lighting, and the result was much more pleasant than the overhead glare I see looking in so many people's windows (You know what I mean, not being a peeping Tom :) So, have multiple light sources, table lamps, sconces, and ceiling lights combined. Encourage her to use real color. Keeping everything white or near white won't help all that much and will feel cold. In my newer place, I have a dark interior stairwell and I just went with it and painted it black. The woodwork is all white, and there is artwork, --but one thing its not is dingy or depressing. I wouldnt recommmend this for living space but as transition space it works quite well. I think if she embraces the lack of natural light and supplements it with artificial, and creates things to look at inside the apartment to compensate for the lack of view she could be very happy with the result.

Hi thanks so much for all of the suggestions forboystoo: I was familiar w/ her paint post, but thx so much for linking - thats why I tried all the colors I listed (still wondering if its palladian blue or celery) I will email her and ask her your question as well assuming I can find the pic you spoke of on her portfolio. On her blog I do remember a post or comment where she indicates that because people pay for her services she is unable to give them out for free...which is why I came here for everyone's advice/thoughts! It's funny I have samples of all the colors everyone suggested except pearl gray so I think I may be on the right track to emulating the general feel of the room...trust me, this attitude is so i do not become obsessed! Thx for all the suggestions thus far, its made me feel like I am in the ball park! I also think the lighting is making whatever color it is look blue on the side wall and green near the light so i do believe it is a blue under normal conditions w/ a great deal of green and some gray in it! will let you know if she writes me back!

Wood floors - We put in natural Sassafras floors where the new kitchen is going - no stain - stain will DEFINITELY need touching up sooner than later in a kitchen. Sassafras is a light-colored wood with interesting grain, but it is soft (just barely harder than pine). Natural Maple is light-colored - very little grain though, so it is a more modern, clean look. Ambrosia Maple has character - worm holes and darker streaking. Where the new floor meets the antique Fir floor in the DR we will be adding a decorative strip between (probably Walnut and Ash). We hand-finished all our floors with Tung Oil; the benefit is that any wear-and-tear can easily be touched up with a bit of steel wool and new oil on just that area, rather than needing to re-do the entire floor. Search this forum for Tung Oil - there is one thread where I posted all the details on how to properly do it (April or March 2011). River rock tiles - the average price for those is about $10-$12 / sq.ft. Your link is in Polish Zloty, but I don't know the current exchange rate. I'm not Jewish, so I don't know the rules, but I agree that a small oven sucks! We have a 37" wide vintage Chamers Range, and the oven is SMALL! If I cannot get a separate baking center (where the laundry is supposed to go), we'll be putting one extra 30" electric wall oven under the counter in the island. Not so convenient, but a necessary evil - we NEED the counterspace, so wall ovens are out in our small kitchen. My kitchen is an "L" with an island - open fully on two sides to DR and FR; the cab walls are only 12' and 13'6" long. I am still able to fit a separate 33" fridge and 33" freezer, an extra 27" 3-burner electric cooktop with storage below, the 37"w Chambers range, one smaller 21-24"w sink with double dish-drawers next to the range, and a large 36"w sink for pots and pans and prep (next to compost drawer) on the island. Both sinks will be at least 9" deep, the smaller one maybe 12" deep because that will be the dish sink. Do you need 2 separate dishwashers? What about a double dish-drawer unit? They take up less aisle space when open, and for us the benefit is that smaller loads can be done more often, rather than waiting to fill up a standard D/W and running out of coffee mugs and spoons in the meantime ;)

I really like the new color! And I always admire the ability of those of you who can just whip out painting a room or hall with all that trim to paint around as though it's just a piece of cake! You're amazing!

Really like it! It looks like you've done a lot to the inside of your home. I remember loving your front porch too, are you going to be doing something different to it also?

After you leave ML's house...umm...come on over to mine with that fantastic color sense and energy.

You are right on with what it does for the art work. You and I both want to show it off in our homes and you sure did pick the perfect color. Looking forward to seeing the whole thing when completed. c

I LOVE it! Looks like I had better get on over to the paint store and get busy next weekend! I was hoping it would look just like that and I agree with you on the Aura paint!

Auntjen, could I bother you with one more question? I am assuming the hallway has no direct natural light, is that right? I would like to try this in a bath with no windows as well as a bedroom with windows facing south and east (one single window each). If it looks that wonderful with no light from outside, I am betting it will look good in just about any space-but then I LOVE greens.

Thanks again for posting your pictures. I wish I could stroll through your house to see all your colors IRL. :)

Thanks so much for the kind words! Just taking a break and getting ready to put the last coat on in a few. I'm actually wearing my weight-lifting glove on my painting hand because it's so darn sore, but I'm determined to finish! (I've told myself that my reward can be going out this evening and having a delicious brew-pub ale if I get all of this done today. ;-))

Cyn, the hallway doesn't get any natural light - you're correct. I've got the front door open and lights blaring in all of the adjacent rooms and it's still a little hard to see to paint in some of the corners. It's a darker green than what I had originally thought I'd use in the hallway, but there's something subtle about it too - if that makes any sense!

Gosh, I hope I never get sick of green. This makes the 5th BM green shade I've used in the house in various rooms. I plan to use the BM Grasshopper that didn't work in my hallway in the front office next. Green, green, green! I'm almost starting to see it as a neutral though. Do you think that's even possible?

(Listening to the "Adele" station on Pandora radio while I paint. I think I need to change it ... I keep feeling like I need to cry. ;-))

Very nice! I really like it better than the original color, jen, I hope you don't mind my saying so.

Although I must say that from the title I thought you meant you were sharing a pic of a raccoon who had wandered into your house : )

LOL @ Flyleft! Not a raccoon, but in the past week we've had both a possum and a fox show up on our front porch!

You're right - green is nature's neutral! I like that thought!

I am finished - artwork is all hung back in its place and the supplies are cleaned up. Never made it out for that pint to reward myself though. When it came down to it, there's nothing I wanted to do more than take a shower and put on my jammies. I have to remind myself sometimes that I'm 49, not 25. ;-)

Jen, I absolutely think green can be a neutral! At least that is how I use it. I have Saybrook Sage in the kitchen/keeping room (too small to call it a family room-ha) and think it is a wonderful neutral. Can't wait to add the UN and maybe the Rosemary Sprig somewhere, too! Love, love, love greens.

I am 10 years older than you are and boy, I would give anything for your energy!
