Advice for kids room paint colors

I have a whole house to paint and today the new furniture for my daughter's room came in....and the blue tape was just sitting there...so I started. I painted the chair rail and the molding ultra white. But I've been struggling with ideas for her room for months. We only got two peices of furniture in today so I want to take advantage. This is a picture of the new furniture with the current comforter that I really like. I have not picked curtains, though a bright pink is up there now. I really think I want some soothing and cool colors. I'm thinking a very nice bright and very light blue but I am not sure. Also, should I paint both the top and bottom the same color or go for something darker on the bottom? I've been poring over internet pages and books for months but until I decided on the house (we finally found one!!) and the furniture I was unsure. Does anyone have any thoughts? I'm not sure if I captured the true colors of the the furniture and comforter set - I literally just covered her face (she's sleeping on the trundle tonight, fun!) and snapped a shot 2 minutes ago. I'd go with green. Maybe lighter on top, darker on bottom from the same color card.

Hmmm...green, I've toyed with that idea, thank you :) Here is a better shot of the room - but with the old furniture. Thanks, Christy

I'm late to the conversation, but I'm glad you are leaving the room the colors it is. I went through this with my dd two years ago. She was almost six and had picked out the bedding, curtains, and pink wall color herself. She was really upset that her room was to be changed. It wasn't worth stressing her out any more than a move already does. At the stager's suggestion, I took down the pink curtains and replaced them with white. I switched out the bedding for a more nuetral color that went with the garden theme of the room. Dd's stuff (with her permission) that wasn't used for staging went into a box for the new house. When we walked through the house with the new owner, she complimented the room. It was the only room in the house that she complimented. IMO, it helped sell the house. I think if your rooms look magazine worthy, then leaving them as is, is fine. If they are just a hodge podge and a mix of stuff, it is better to repaint or stage so that it looks more appealing. I have seen some kid's rooms that made me cringe because everything clashed or looked like it had been thrown together with no thought of what worked.

cute room! Lime green would be bright & cheery & pick up one of the colors in the sheets. Lime green also works well for a boy or a girl, so it would be a happy color for whichever child gets the room when the other one gets a different room. (When I was about 14 years old, I painted my room lime green, & it was so cheerful that my mother kept it that color until she sold the house about 30 years later.)

Colors can be pretty neutral if you choose the right one. I'm planning to do a denim finish in my older son's room but a blue grey color can be fairly neutral and would age well with a boy. Another alternative to painting a color would be wall stickers (they're pretty cheap and easy to change out) or removable wallpaper. I've never used removable wallpaper but I've heard good things about it.

Thanks everyone, I like the lilac color suggested above but it may be too much with the purple rug. I'll need to get a sample to see. My daughter DEFINITELY prefers pink of all the colors in the wallpaper.... although because she is 4, I do wonder if she will outgrow that preference soon. I chose a wallpaper that I thought would work for her for a number of years, but I'm not sure about the pink wall color. I guess I can just repaint at some point! :) I don't want the colors to be too saturated because it's a Tudor home so the windows are smaller and it's overall a bit dark. I don't want to contribute to the darkness with walls that are also very dark. The colors I did try were shades of pink/rose that came from the wallpaper, so thanks for validating that was a good strategy. The trim will be Simply White by Benjamin Moore. The furniture is a chocolate color - we've had it for a while, but I think I may replace it with a white set soon to brighten up the room. Question based on a couple of comments above: I thought we would select the bedding last since it's easier to change out and adapt to paint colors etc. But it sounds like I should pick that earlier and then find a wall color that works? I didn't realize this was the best order of operations for this process. Thanks!

Ooooh, so exciting to see another poster doing a child's space. Not many seem to be working on a child's space, but that's where I am at right now. I am almost done both son and daughter's rooms and can hardly wait to post after photos. Your furniture and bedding is so nice! I like the scroll pattern on the furniture.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions :) I really tried the greens but the blues kept calling me back!! I worked hard all day and here is the finished product!!! I'm so excited a new house with every room needing paint and the first one turns out fabulous. Can't wait to start on all of the others - of course, I'll be back here!!

Now thoughts for the master bedroom.....lol!!
