How old are they?

The boy is certainly old enough to pick a paint color. For the girl, how about both color and serene, maybe a very pale lavender.

We are fairly neutral everywhere also except for the bedrooms. Mine are 12 and 10 and I let them choose. They love it and it really looks nice. I did put some limits as in no black or red because it's too hard to cover later but other than that they made the choice. No regrets. Paint is easy to change - carpet not so much. ;)

When my children were young, I let them decide on the colors for their rooms. I took them to the paint store to pick out chips and we had a great time. I took each child separately so they felt they had a special day with Mom doing something for themselves.

I was there to also help "guide" them. So when my daughter picked the bubblegum pink, I also suggested to her that she look at some softer pinks. (If she had decided on the bubblegum, I would have let her paint it that color.)

I agree, let them help decide. My kids all had a hand in choosing their bedroom colors. Not only is it fun for them, but it gives them a sense of ownership and belonging, which will help with the transition to the new house.

My 11 year old said he doesn't care, typical man, as long as it's not babyish. The little one doesn't quite understand, but says her favorite color is pink. I guess I will keep it simple (neutral) for now. Maybe they will care more in their teens and we'll repaint.

Colors can be pretty neutral if you choose the right one. I'm planning to do a denim finish in my older son's room but a blue grey color can be fairly neutral and would age well with a boy. Another alternative to painting a color would be wall stickers (they're pretty cheap and easy to change out) or removable wallpaper. I've never used removable wallpaper but I've heard good things about it.

Let your kids pick out a new bedspread, then find a color that will go good with it.

Neutrals are boring, boring, boring. Give the kids a little color! (or better, a lot of color!) It's only paint, trivial to change whenever and as often as you want.

There are currently multiple trends. One is greyed down pastels. One is African handcrafts inspired. One is clashing patterns, including florals, photographic prints and geometrics. Brights are still trending from the last few years, but more as accessories. Teal is still hanging around. Next trend is dark jewels colours.

As far as brights are concerned, they never went out for kids.

I painted my daughter's room light cream with yellow undertone (BM antique lace) above the chair rails and painted stripes (soft pink and green) under the rails to coordinate with her bedding. When she got older we repainted the stripes in a different colors but kept the top portion because it pretty much goes with everything.

We have two girls. for the younger one (1.5) we chose her color (SW 6827 Elation ) which is a pale lavender. For the older one (6) we gave her some constrained choice. We presented her with 3 options all of which we would be happy with. She chose a pale yellow (SW 6693 lily). The rest of the house is a light gray (SW 7653 Silverpoint). we love all three colors.

I asked my 4 year old son what he wanted and he said red very emphatically. He ended up with greige :).
