I like the one without a back (#3), you could slide it under the overhang when not in use. Also, would retain the "open-ness" of the kitchen, vs. having a stool back sticking up and visually taking up space.

Another vote for the backless one that could slide under the breakfast bar!

I agree with the others. It looks like you have alot of room under the overhang for them fit, and then they will be completely out of the way when you don't need them.

Bixa, I just posted a link to the counter-height stools in my other thread, but in case you don't catch it there, here it is again.

I like the clean look of backless, but not the discomfort. A friend has a big island with 6 coordinating stools - 2 without backs and 4 with. There is ALWAYS amiable jockeying for the stools with backs and I remembered that when searching for mine.

The ones I bought have low-profile backs -- just enough support when you want it but keeps the look clean, too. The seating area is deeper than standard so you might want to verify that the dimensions would work with your layout, but I love these.

I love the chairs in the last pic but they would stick out 20 inches and I only have 12 inches to work with so the chairs would stick out 8 inches from the counters edge. I know the ones with backs are more comfortable but not sure if they are going to work for me. Does anybody have a chair that doesn't stick out as far?

I think stools that are bar height with no backs can be uncomfortable, but counter height stools are more comfortable because your feet are firmly planted on the floor and you don't feel the need to be supported by the back. Hope that makes sense.

I'd like to see something more like the last one, though not as delicate, like the one above it. I think having some cushion fabric and open chair detail on the back would be nice color and textural additions to your kitchen.

So, how deep can the chairs be?

k9arlene, hmmm. I've got a 35" inseam and when I'm sitting on my counter-height stool my toes are barely grazing the floor, even if I scooch towards the front edge of the seat. I do have a footrest on both the table and the stools, and that does help.

I think of counter height stools to be around 24" high. Hard to believe your feet aren't flat on the floor at that height.

have to say the one without the back as well. Your kitchen may be just too small (as is mine) to handle backed stools but if you like the stools with a back i choose the 2nd to last even though the 2nd one probably would look best lol have i confused u?

I'd go with backless too primarily due to space issues and also the shape of the windsor chair backs in direct proximity...they'd be fighting with the styles of the other stools.

i agree with jant that with the windsor style chairs and curvy light fixture that out of choices shown the backless would look better. i'd search for a curved back shape if you wanted a stool with a back.
