Magnaverde's rules
Comments (27)No book. I've suggested more than once he should at least have his own blog. Some blogs are so dumb - the overall gist of blogging kind of gets on my nerves but content like M. cranks out is what I think the essence of blogging should be about. The popularity of M's posts just goes to show that the well publicized "guidelines" for blogging like 300 words or less, lead with a picture, insert picture every other paragraph etc. are guidelines for people who are boring and write about stoopid stuff no one gives two craps about. More bloggers should write for grown-ups instead of a three-year-old's attention span. See - now you guys got me started on a blog rant. And where the hell is M any way? I hope he's not dead or sick or something bad....See MoreChange of Scenery, Magnaverde & Perspective
Comments (12)I think there is a fine line between living the life you have vs. living the life you want. If you are financially stable, then you can afford to live the life you have. If you are struggling, then you aspire to live the life you want. And, isn't that what it's all about? Trying to elevate yourself to the next level? And, if you're already there, you can then reap your rewards. I am friends with people in all socio-economic positions. Sure, the people who have money may tend to live with excess. But I don't hold that against them. In fact, life is short, enjoy yourself. If that means collecting art, animal heads and a museum-like surroundings, so be it. On the other hand, if you grow your own vegetables, compost and go jogging then plop your feet on the coffee table, that's great, too. I once had a client who was wealthy beyond belief. She had priceless art work, traveled the world and had a hutch in her dining room that cost more than my car. But she lost her son to cancer at 16. Did that money help her? No. So if she wants to surround herself with *stuff* then so be it. I also have friends who are designers. I would be so disappointed if I went to their homes and they didn't design to impress. I pick up a lot of decorating tips from them -- for free! Then again, if somebody dropped by my house unexpectedly on a work day, I'd be mortified. With 2 home businesses, this house always look like it exploded and we haven't gotten around to putting everything back. But then, I would apologize for the paint cans, paper, cabinet doors, drill, whatever else was on the island, dining room table or floors and explain what project I was working on and then try to say something witty like "did you know Lillian Vernon started her company from her dining room"? I try to get it all cleaned up by the time my kids get off the bus, so I can get their snacks ready and clear off the island where we do homework together. We definately live the life we have!! However, if Augie Busch the third was my neighbor, I wouldn't care what anybody thought of my decorating. And, my husband would be in heaven!...See MoreChijim, Magnaverde, or___, mirrored chinoiserie dining room?
Comments (13)Sorry I didn't see this till just now, Palimpsest. I've been at fine stores everywhere. I think Redecor8 is on to something. I vaguely remember a room with a wall treatement like that, but I don't remmeber where I saw it, which tells me it wasn't in a book or magazine. Those I can always remember. And it must be fairly new, done by someone working in traditional style, since I'd never seen that particular technique before. I can think of engraved mirrors & reverse-painted mirrors with Chinoiserie scenes, but not this scratch-off technique. The bad part is that wherever I saw it, I wasn't taken enough with it to save a picture. But it's almost bedtime, so maybe the designer's name will come to me once I start shutting down--if, that is, I registered it at all when I first saw it. If I did, it should come back. It sounds stupid, I know, but that half-there state is when your brain starts playing connect-the-dots and most of the time, I wake up with an answer. That doesn't, of course, guarantee that it's a good answer. A Nyquil-induced stupor one time when I was sick is what gave me the idea for my dripping-plaster table. It's also how I once invented a new kind of sump pump that, as water pressure coming up from below--as in a flooding storm sewer during a flash flood during a sudden storm--built up beyond what's normal, would seal even tighter than normal, preventing the water's upward force from overpowering the mechanism. I don't know how to explain the reciprocating-force gizmo my brain came up with while I was asleep, but I could see it as clear as anything, and when I drew it & showed it to a civil engineer pal, he said that it was an ingenious device whose main flaw was that it was too efficient, and that, instead of allowing water to seep in around the failing seal as the pressure built up, it would seal so tight that, eventually, the whole basement floor would erupt like a concrete volcano, destroying the entire house instead of just flooding the basement. Then again, I never claimed that it was a perfect solution. Anyway, none of that really helps with your question, but it does show that our brains work round-the-clock, so maybe I'll remember where I saw that wall treatment after all. Meanwhile, pleasant dreams, all. M....See MoreMagnaverde is one wise soul!
Comments (15)It's a beautiful stone. Good for you for realizing that you should work with what you have. I have seen some crazy mixes at open houses where the outside is distinctly California Hacienda style and then you walk inside and find the interior totally in conflict, decked out in all Asian-inspired furniture and decorations. I think you are going to love that counter material--it's got awesome movement and coloring! Whew, now you can move ahead with all the other billion decisions for the kitchen!...See Moremitchdesj
