restained dining set--stain is too dark and without depth.

Hello,

I just restained our dining set--hutch, table , and chairs with java gel stain. It looked very dark after one coat, so for the second coat I mixed java with cherry, but I didnt see much change.

The set is now very dark and without depth--almost like I painted it except much duller. When I looked at other factory finished espresso furniture in the house, I noticed they have a reddish tone peeking through the espresso finish which gives it a depth and sheen.

My sister suggested wiping the finish lightly wtih paint thinner. However, I don't want a distressed look--not sure it that is what will happen.

I lightly misted some black and espresso spray paint which gave it a bit of depth but not really noticeable. I was thinking of getting a mahagany colored spray paint and trying that. Or maybe once I put poly on it, that will make a difference?

Any suggestions? Here is a pic--I have since done another coat on the inside.
