Thanks, you guys :) It's hard to imagine from these photos, but most of the tiles are opalescent/pearlescent. We're doing a minimalist-with-a-surprise kind of bathroom (Toto nexus fixtures, clean and simple, simple linear tile otherwise) and we thought that if we didn't cut the pieces it would be easier, but I've ended up cutting many pieces on the 10" tile saw smaller to fit the nooks & crannies anyway! It's a challenge to make it all 9-3/4" wide with tiles from several different lines, with variety and rhythm (each 2' unit has three long light gold pearlescent pencil liners running through it to establish directionality), but it's So Much Fun. We both critique and celebrate each other's work...she really seems to be into it. What fun :)

So you did do some cutting -- I wondered how you got everything to fit together so well for remnants. I just love it! Kinda wishing I had a contemporary home again :)

Very cool. As awn03 mentioned, I immediately thought of Frank Lloyd Wright.

If you are not finished, but will be doing more, why not see about getting an unfired tile and signing that, then having it fired and add it at the bottom? If you have a pottery/ceramics place around you, they should be able to help, or check out a craft store.

The other thing would be to use the ceramics paint and paint on your initials, etc. on a fired tile, then bake that in the oven to make it permanent.

Delta makes Air Dry Perm-Enamel, which can be used on glass and ceramic tile, and doesn't require firing to be permanent. I found a site that sells it, but I am not sure if it is still being made - I know my Hobby Lobby doesn't carry it any more. I have used it to paint designs on coffee mugs and glass jars, and it is permanent once dry, including dishwasher and oven safe. Here is the link:

YES, awm, I have cut some of them. No triangles or half circles, though -- we made a rule of that. Hope that doesn't ruin it for you :) DD loved seeing the FLW windows, too--thanks!

It's like a jigsaw puzzle that there are an infinite number of correct answers to -- really a great thing to do if you have the time, which we do since it's a DIY remodel, mostly (except for setting the tub/roughing in tub plumbing and the drywall). I'll probably let DD help mount them, too, which will be really fun!

I think we'll go to P&L with some pics, maybe a sample sheet, and ask them if there's a way we could write on a tile before they fire it -- these are all their own tiles that they make here in Portland. Sure hope they work out some way to do it. Wouldn't that be great?!

les & sweeby, you posted while I was typing -- les, thanks very much for the ideas re a tile! Seems you and I were thinking along similar lines. I'd really love to have P&L let us do a tile, I'd even pay extra for it :) but the perm-enamel sounds like a great backup. I'm going to Michael's tomorrow morning to get some watercolor paper for paint sampling at 50% off, so I'll look for that too.

And thanks, sweeby -- my hard-learned phrase about remodeling, no matter who does it, is "there's many a slip twixt the cup and the lip" so I am pretty much holding my breath until we get the Wediboard up and the shower tiled...not to mention the floor, esp. if we decide on the floor heat.

I've said it's going to be weird how much time I start spending up in DD's bathroom once this is done -- because I know I'll just be there, running my hands over it, finding new favorite spots, etc :)

Just thinking that it might be more fun to bury a tile in the midst of the work somewhere with your initials, rather than in the obvious bottom or top spot. Almost like a 'Where's Waldo", you could each have one with your initials, and another one with the date. Maybe written like a monogram or interesting pattern on a small tile, it would add another unique touch to your amazing work. Or, if you could, it would be cool to use a tool to carve the initials into a tile or two, then have those glazed. Subtle, but forever a part of the work.

I have only an inkling of how difficult this was, to fit all the pieces together, looking so professional. Oh, how I wish I were there to see the iridescence....yummy. And having a P&L seconds room in your own backyard is such a treat.

I've wanted to do one of these forever since I saw P&L tile, and this finally gave me the excuse. The stone mosaic inserts in our master bath, where I took out some of the commercial onyx slice mosaic and rearranged it with slices of Oregon agate, jasper and quartz we collected ourselves, were a pilot study for this, I am now realizing. The FLW similarity is purely subconscious (but entirely possible, since I have loved his work for decades).

les, your ideas about how to embed a signature are really helpful--we were thinking the same thing about hiding our signatures (like the idea of the date, too) somewhere along the way.

pesky, is there the remotest chance your friend might let you post pics of her work? I'd *love* to see it...you could show her ours, if it would help her feel o.k. about sharing it...

and amy, YES, I learned how to embed photos! And you're right about how long it takes -- I have 'mosaic cramp' in my shoulders already so I am able to work on it only in short bits, since I have to sit on the floor to do it (my worktable is completely cluttered right now). DD appreciated your last line :)
