Help with Exterior Columns

We are at the point of doing some work on the exterior of the house. We would love to have some more input before we start.

As some of you mentioned in previous posts, the columns seem too heavy/chunky for the delicate, light windows. The door looks squatty compared to the scale of the columns/roofline. But then again, I've thought that maybe the problem is not in the columns, but in the thin roofline on that porch area. ???

So, we are thinking to take the brick off the columns and reface with square wood columns that are more to scale with the house. Maybe a column that has some detail in the middle to break up the length a bit? We are also thinking to tear down the brick planter wall and face the patio with flagstone or tile that looks like wood. Eventually, we will add trim around the door and window above it, to make it look more like one taller piece. Ideas, thoughts before we begin?
