Very pretty room! I like the way you had it to begin with. That "wall" of sofa makes a nice separation of the space without being closed off. You could put a nice sofa table with a couple of lamps along the back of the sofa wall and it would be beautiful.

I can't really help with the sectional recommendation. Maybe one of those Norwalk type of furniture stores where you select the shape and fabric separately? Even if the shape is a little contemporary, you could french-country it up with the fabric.

Anyway, your place looks great. I love open rooms.

Instead of a sectional or couch/loveseat, why not a long couch on the windowless wall, and a pair of chairs and ottoman facing the fireplace? You won't get the wall feeling from the chairs that you might get from the back of a loveseat or sectional, and you will end up with the same amount of seating, plus more versatility.

To widen the feeling of the room, it would be great if you could do shelving that would fill both sides of the fireplace area.

Or, you could put the couch on the window wall, and put the (new, lcd flat panel) tv on the plain wall with a great console below it. Then put the chairs on either side of the console. End tables by the couch, a small table and lamp by the chair near the fireplace, a floor lamp by the chair at the end closer to the kitchen.

I notice that you mention kids, but I see that your table only has two chairs. Do you actually ever use that table? Would that area be better served as additional seating for the family room area?

Hi, actually that table is used constantly! My 3 year old uses that instead of the taller barstools for just about everything! He is home with me all day while the other 2 are at school. Also those two chairs along with the 3 barstools make just enough seats for our family when we don't want to use the adjacent dining room. Initially I had thought about that though..but without the dinette it just doesn't look right...you can see the opening from the entry to the left and there is also an area that sticks out with a closet under the stairs..all of this really separates the area to where I think the dinette would need to stay anyway. Maybe I can get more pics. Thanks

Hi again, I included two more pics to show the area that the dinette sits in. I moved the dinette table and can't seem to see how I could arrange any furniture in that area, since it seems like kitchen area to me? les did you have any certain ideas for furniture in this area? that might help me visualize it...anyway I also like the idea of a nice entertainment center on the long wall, but I'm not sure I can imagine the couch covering my window view. Thanks for any more ideas guys!

You need to keep the walking flowing. Is the light fixture in line with the hall doorway and the door to go outside?

I am thinking you could do two loveseats. One on the wall and another dividing the rooms as a "wall". The table could go between the "wall" loveseat and the island. Your walkway would be a circle around the table. My friend has hers like this but she has a square table. I think round makes the table seem less in the way than a square would. If you did this you would not want a long sofa table behind the "wall" sofa because I do not think you have enough room. You have windows like I do, really consider how much light will glare on tv if it is put on the windowless wall. I finally got shutters which help but am now resorting to the tv over the fireplace.

I was also thinking a sectional would be great in your space but some would not like that you can only get to seating from one opening. But it would give you good direction and seating for tv viewing. A "wall" would give two entrances to that area. You could possibly do a sofa on the wall and float a loveseat, but that depends on wall length of course.

My instinct is that you probably were on the right track with the sofa and loveseat arrangement that you mentioned with the loveseat as a "wall". Perhaps the scale was off as you mentioned they were overstuffed. I would assume that the dinette would be behind the loveseat somewhat like a sofa- table(with the leaf down). This makes sense to me as I would think you would naturally want to divide between the kitchen and the family room. With the sofa on the long wall you would still have room for an easy chair between the window and french-door.

Could you try a small couch or love seat on the long wall, with 2 small recliners opposite that?

Not sure if this matters, but the light fixture can be moved to be whereever the table ends up. Whether you hire out or DIY it can be done to be where you need it.

Sofa on wall opposing windows with end tables on each end with lamps- not matching end tables. A round one towards the kitchen. 2 club chairs with table with lamp in front of your windows. Add another chair at the kitchen end of the sofa by a round end table. Upholstered ottoman for coffee table....people on sofa and sitting in club chairs can prop their feet up. It also won't block your view to your fireplace. Built -ins on each side of the fireplace. One side to hold your TV and audio equipment- with pocket doors to hide the tv when you don't want to see it.

Wooden roman shades on window with drapes on a big thick wooden rod. Same drapes on your french doors and use a coordinating fabric with banding of your drapery fabric as a roman/london shade on the window above the sink. Of course fringe!!

I guess I am suggesting this set up to keep the entry open to your great room.

Really, you just have to go to furniture stores and dig thru fabrics and look at furniture that speaks to you.

I'm sure it's tooo contemporary for you, but my sofa would work really well in your living room, and it can seat so many people. It's a sectional and you can buy as many of the sections as you like. Everyone who sits on it tells me it's SO comfortable.
