Should I change my vision for the love of one item?
Comments (42)Sweeby, I could give you a big hug! I think you are absolutely right-- especially in my room, the table will fade into the background. In fact, I knew that all along but it never clicked-- that is why I didnt buy the French Heritage table I fell in love with last summer when Parma ordered hers. My room wouldnt do it justice.. it doesnt have the view or space to showcase it. What IS important to me is that the table is round and works well (rather than against) the other elements-- that explains why I am all over th place. Painted, copper, even mission tables have been on my list-- the only common threads are old/old looking, round, european-ish. Thank you .. I have more focus now and it really makes sense given my decision earlier today-- I am going to order the chandelier and maybe paint before I get the table. I think it will make a big difference and will give me time to decide on a table. I love the chairs with rush seats-- I could even use those with my current table. I dont see anything like them on our local CL but I will watch ebay and the consignment stores. (sorry if i am babbling and not making sense-- it's been a long day and I wanted to be sure to respond because your post was really helpful to me. )...See MorePlease help with kitchen-Vision got lost. Comments (37)Hi there. This was a really hard one for me to comment on because I have such an opposite kitchen with light cabinets. I think you need to choose your direction. Your kitchen can be a contemporary or traditional kitchen depending on a few choices. What is the dominant style in the rest of your house? Your kitchen should reflect your general style If you like contemporary style, then you already have a lot of the elements but need a few focal points. Your kitchen is almost identical to my friends kitchen except that her husband chose smaller metal tiles (And yes-her husband chose everything too. It must be a man gene that likes this particular combination). Their kitchen was really stunning when it all came together. They had several large pieces of art with stark white walls. One of the pieces of art was a huge painting in blue with koi. The other art were 3 pieces of 3 foot long ceramic bars hung vertically on the wall. They did not try to fill the space with lots of little things but instead used very large pieces that were a focal point of the kitchen. You could also go a more traditional route but will likely need to change your backsplash to have it really meld. A glass tile backsplash would be really pretty and might still be okay with the husband? How about a lighted pot rack over the island with baskets, pots and herbs hanging? (see below) Fabric around the windows, baskets on the ledge, chandelier shades, cushion fabric, new knobs, rugs etc would add more visual interest. I think your kitchen has a lot of potential, you just need to make it yours! I am really glad my husband could care less about decorating....See MoreWhat visions for your kitchen did you have to let go of?
Comments (38)All of my inspiration kitchens had natural cherry cabinets and soapstone counters. I knew before we even started that soapstone was going to be out of our budget--I had a lot of counter space going in, with some other expensive details. Instead, I chose a laminate with a similar vibe and put in huge windows. I have plenty of work space for multiple cooks, all the space I could want for baking and prepping, and I can always see the trees in the yard and the sky above them. I am very happy with my choices. The thing stung a bit was giving up the walk in pantry. In a 20X19 foot space, you'd think that we could fit a walk in pantry, but no matter how we positioned it, it screwed up something else in the layout, so in the end I gave it up and put in a wall of built in cabinets instead. I stash things in the laundry room and mudroom closet when I need to. I'm ok with that, because I got the mudroom and the laundry room in the remodel as well! :-) Again, I'm happy with the choices we made. Cj...See MoreHow can I make my job appealing to contractors?
Comments (5)Have you asked the neighbor who they used? In my area I think there are certain contractors that work with Ikea but many others don't. In my area certain contractors have been posted to a local list serv as working with Ikea cabinets. My understanding is putting the pieces together is labor intensive and costs quite a bit. Are you handy enough to do that part? Otherwise, consider what the return policy is so that if you can return them you at least know for how long. It does seem a bit backwards, we picked out cabinets and then got pricing from a GC recommended by our kitchen designer and maybe 1-2 other quotes as well. It was important to use that the GC was used to working with our appliances and cabinets. I'm not sure why a contractor that is so busy that they can't take you on would tie up his subs for your work without getting their usual pay for it? But you could find out the subs used by a particular GC, that is a normal question to ask and some list it on their websites....See Morelascatx
