I am sick. This is a huge bummer - it's my son's birthday. I barely made it out to pick up cup cakes for him. Poor kid.

I have horrific pain in my right side, feels a bit gastroenteritis-y, but maybe gall bladder-ish too.

I have a fever of 101.3, on Tylenol. I have not started puking, but nothing is making it all the way down, if you know what I mean. Something very bad is going to happen.

ER? Call a doctor? Go back to bed?

I don't want to be a hypochondriac, but I'm starting to worry. The pain started about 3 days ago and I thought it was just gall bladder irritation from drinking some cola. It's gotten progressively worse - last night it was becoming unbearable. Today, I am utterly out of commission.

I'm weak, barely able to walk - I thought I was going to die when I coughed. I can't eat anymore - have no appetite.

Anyone want to make a mama-diagnosis here? Judgment call?

The fig you had trouble with was repotted while it was in leaf, which is always going to be stressful. There is no way to determine how you went about repotting the avocodo w/o you telling us, so no one can determine what might have gone wrong. Did you keep the roots wet while you worked? cut pie-shaped wedges out of the root mass? fertilize right after the repot? remove a very large fraction of the roots? Sometimes, it's necessary to remove some of the foliage when trees are in leaf if you suspect the roots remaining after the repot might be inadequate in supplying the canopy with the water it needs. Resist the urge to water as soon as you see the top of the soil drying out. There is little water loss from the soil because of the condition of the plant and the glazed container, so I seriously doubt if you'd need to water more than weekly until growth resumes. Whether or not the plant responds depends on how well it was growing before the work. It looks like it was doing well, so it should be OK. I can tell you though, that you need to change something in your methodology to prevent this type of reaction in your plants. A little wilting and pouting is to be expected for a week or two, but not to the degree you're seeing with the avocado. Al

Zen, I didn't even know this was coir, haha. I was looking for ProMix and he said this was better and bam -- Id heard of it so I bought it. But honestly, I'm not against coconut coir; one of my favorite soils is by Gardner and Bloome, based wholly on coir. Some of my older pots are 5-1-1 based on that soil and I don't have any issues. Really it's such a small part of 5-1-1, I could probably use cotton balls and it'd work. But yes, generally, I like peat in 5-1-1 indoors because it seems to dry quicker than coir. Outdoors, it buys me an extra day when necessary, it seems. I've run out anyway and now have more Promix HP again. All is well again. Drew, I see what you're saying. Perhaps it does work with compost, but containers in and of themselves are kind of unnatural, too, no? Organic, in terms of not using harmful pesticides, is important to me, but if my sansevieria or columbine happen to grow in non-soil medium and are fed nutrients via my hand, I'm okay with that, too. I have mycorrhizae in the soil with Promix, and as you can see, I throw lots of stuff in the soil, haha. Josh, I must have missed this 55* stuff. Total oversight. I'm in Stockton and I doubt we went below 55 though I did wake up to 58 one day last week. This weekend, it's back in the 90s. I guess as a rule I will leave the organic stuff out. I really don't fertilize a lot, and just wanted to boost the soil a bit. DFish, I guess it's possible that pot just isn't draining well. I think I'll drill more holes in it before I attempt the pot again with new soil. Thank you!

Hi Autumn. I'm glad others chimed in with their experiences before I saw this. I never owned anything except electric coil until my new gas rangetop. I had only cooked on gas a few times and that was enough to sell me. I did briefly consider induction during my reno planning. The potential hum of a pan on the burner; the fact that a couple of my pans wouldn't work with the technology; and the inability to cook on it during a power outage turned me away from induction. We lose power, albeit briefly, a couple of times a year, and I feel helpless when I can't make a warm meal when it's cold and dark. Since I have a rangetop, I can't comment on using gas to power my oven. From reading over on the Appliance Forum, I know gas is better for certain foods as mentioned earlier. I'm happy to have my electric wall ovens, although I'm sure I would have adapted to a gas oven if necessary. My rangetop is a 36" 6 burner Capital Culinarian. All burners are of equal power at 23,000 btus and are open, as opposed to sealed. It runs counter-intuitive, at least it did to me, that an open burner would be easier to clean. Gas and coil still don't compare in cleanability to induction. Did I find it difficult to change to gas? Yes and no. As far as one type of fuel to another, not hard at all! A joy, in fact! The ability to adjust the heat so quickly makes cooking easier for me. My difficulties with gas were more with my rangetop's extremely powerful burners, which weren't adjusted properly out of the box. I had a horrible time simmering anything on any burner, as have many CC owners. After some parts swapping and a couple of tech visits, I seem to be able to simmer most anything I've tried so far well enough to get by. Did I miss anything? Did I get everything answered? Hope so!

The first attempt outside (pictured here) died off. However a couple plants that wintered in my garage and then were planted out a year ago survived. And one of them, which I think might be the only true W. undulata, is growing back with extreme vigor! I think the seedlot might have contained some other species because there is another one - also returning albeit more weakly - with fuzzy, rounded leaves. It amazes me they survived such a cold winter. (compared to the 12 other years I've lived here) Roughly 0F with no snow cover - lowest we've gone without it. So this makes it an extremely rare South African forb (non bulbous perennial) that can survive the heat of summer and the cold of winter around here.

In answer to reeree's question above, had to rattle my brain for a few minutes but it's judyindisguise that lives in the same town as chicory, they've often made reference to it in posts, and (going strictly from memory here) sounds like they've met in person.

I live about 30 miles away (but the difference in attitudes between there and here is so striking that it could be on another planet). I have chicory's cell number but there was no answer this evening.

The last (and only) time I had those symptoms I ended up in the hospital with PID (pelvic inflammatory disease). I do hope she went to a local doctor.

She might be recovering from a gallbladder surgery by now. Let's hope whatever, that she is just resting and recuperating from whatever was ailing her. If she felt crappy, might not feel like getting on the internet. Let's wait and hope she is fine.

Thank you so much for all the healing thoughts and concern. It makes a difference in how a girl feels.

I'm very ill. I was inches away from an emergency appendectomy and gall bladder removal when the ER doctor vetoed the surgeon and insisted that I have a CT-scan. It showed, surprisingly, that my appendix was in good shape, my gall bladder (which another doctor just assumed was bad because I'm overweight) is in very good condition. However, I'm suffering from a rare malady of an inflamed kidney. Just the right one.

I'm on some serious antibiotics now and very good painkillers.

The surgeon says that she thinks my appendix, because it was halfway hidden behind my bowels, may still be an issue because I have so much pain right there. However, it could be an unhappy "tube" - it's just not showing on the CT-scan. The ER doc didn't get a jump out of me, but the surgeon did. The ER doc said I should have jumped at "hello". I'm not that sensitive. I suppose it behooves the surgeon to cut now and ask questions later. I'm glad the ER doc insisted - I was ready to go for it.

For now, no surgery.

I'm to sleep for 3 days straight. I told my mother not to worry about coming to help me, but now I realize that I was drugged an unable to make a good judgment call. I can barely move and can barely do anything but sleep.

It's funny, I couldn't sleep in the ER - I was crying for sleep - I was so tired and in pain. I went for the CT Scan and had an allergic reaction to the injection (really bad one), and they shot me up with benedryl, right into the IV port. You've never seen a girl crumble so fast. It was a real struggle not to just sprawl on the floor. I slept for 2 hours - couldn't be bothered to wake up. The doctors kept coming in and saying "blah blah blah". Benedryl is one serious drug.

My organs are all happy and working well - I have the liver of a middle schooler apparently. Being a sucky drinker has its advantages, I suppose.

I hope the kidney straightens out soon - I've been having problems with it for years, it seems - just didn't know what it was.

OMG, I am so glad that the surgery wasn't done, but the whole experience, and the kidney issue, sounds awful.

Thank you SO much for letting us know that you are okay (well, as okay as you can be at this point). Now, go to bed, let others take care of you, and pay attention to the kidney.

What an ordeal, Chic. At least the primary trouble is being treated. Do follow up with your kidneys and find out why you have a recurring problem with them and what you can do to prevent future ones or nip them in the bud. Recurrent infections can cause scarring or something. Don't want to lose those babies :)

Sleeping isn't a bad deal -- be sure to rest, rest, rest and let your body heal well :)

Hope you get better soon. It's the pits to be the mom & be sick. One year, think it was my son's 5th birthday. I was starting my 1972 Harley Sportster, trying to kick start it. I'd never kick started it, had just gotten it, was used to starting older Harley's when I started pumping it, it built up pressure & boom - my right foot got slammed up. My poor son.. had to put off cake that night :(

Anyway, a few years ago I had weird pain like you're describing. I went to google & found a female anatomy poster and was able to at least figure out what organ was hurting.

Good! to hear from you and that you did not have a hot abdomen. Sorry about that old contrast allergy, lots of us have that.

I am not sure what an inflamed kidney means, but it must be something like pyelonephritis (?). Kidney disease is serious business. Take care of yourself and get thee to a specialist after this acute illness abates.

Glad you updated us. Please get better soon. Dont rush to do anything. Lots of times, you start feeling a wee bit better and then start doing your daily acitvities- and WHAM- it hits ya.....your body is still not fully recovered. Lay around and be pampedered for a bit. You deserve it!!

SO glad the ER DR. prevailed & you didn't have to have surgery. Hope the kidney is the whole problem and that with the meds and rest, you'll rebound quickly. You don't need another thing to deal with!

I am just reading this thread. Scary to say the least! Never, ever do that again and post here before heading to the emergency room. I cannot believe that doc told you he thought it was the noro-virus! Didn't sound a bit like the noro to me!

I realized today that I have no choice but to dump my current doctor and move on to something better. I did use the current doctor to get a referral to the urologist... hope he's OK.

I've also started keeping a health diary, and made an appointment with a family practice downtown that I hope we can all go to, since the family doctor we all went to before just sucks royally.

And here I thought this town was going to be an easy place to get care. Ugh.

I am sorry that you had to change doctors. Just another thing to adjust to. That must be sooo frustrating to be in such a place and not even be able to find decent healthcare easily! I am glad you are feeling a little better. Sounds like you are doing all you can to take care of it! What a drag!

Ironic, chicory--my whole scare has ended up in my changing doctors, and now you are too...it's times like these that separate the worthy from the mediocre, I guess. I'll send hopes that you can find a wonderful practice that you can trust and consider a true partner.

The docs-on-retainer group I visted, btw, just gave me the willies...it was like a convocation of the rich congratulating themselves on being able to escape mainstream "health" h*ll...even though technically we could afford it (although less, now that we have the Mold Debacle to deal with), I just couldn't bring myself to join the club. Philosophically I can't do it. And guess what--the extra charges are justified by saying "we don't have you come in as often--we do more by e-mail so we have to make up for the lost office visit payments". Well *that's* a bonus I'll pay for. NOT. The whole setup struck DH and me as a really evil sign of things to come...I'll have to find a doctor who doesn't separate himself/herself from the rest of poor suffering humanity, or my mother will spin in her urn.
