I'm aware of the real estate forum. However, I've seen posts that are of a similar nature to this that posters have enjoyed. The DECOR of this home is not all that common today and I posted it hoping others might enjoy viewing it.

Fun visiting this house. I especially drooled over the butler's pantry and the conservatory. Wouldn't it be nice to have that kind of $$$ to spruce it up and then relax and enjoy the house and grounds. I think the exterior is absolutely lovely -- very inviting. Thanks for sharing.

As I took the tour all I could think was how many hours on this forum it would take to decide to decide on window treatments and furniture placement even if you had all the money to do it...lol. Amazing house, thanks for the link :-)

Looks like a beautiful older home. My cousin used to live in a home that had a butler pantry like that. Then again, she had a coach house on the property, too. Siiiighhhh.....

I wish they had taken pics of the second floor bedrooms, especially while they were still furnished. The antiques were exquisite. I can't even begin to imagine moving everything they had in this home. How do you move millions of dollars worth of antiques? Other than very carefully, of course ;)

Yes, Summiebee, I've been through the entire home from basement to fourth floor many, many times. I knew the family very well as they were neighbors growing up. Their basement playroom, which looked nothing like your average basement, was at least 40' x 30'. They later converted that space to an exercise room, sauna and spa with a huge hot tub. There was also a walk-in safe and wine cellar in the basement, along with two bathrooms, laundry room, ironing room and several storage rooms. This home was built when a family had at least several live-in help. The fourth floor originally had many smaller bedrooms for the servants, they knocked down walls and expanded the bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate their children as they got older.

The conservatory was shipped over in pieces from a home in England. They found it while on vacation to London.

Mimi2006, too funny to think of the posters on here trying to decorate each room and coordinating all the colors! But it sure would be fun to have the money to do so. I really hope that whoever buys this home, restores it to its former glory. I'd love to get my hands on the kitchen area. You have to see the two story pantry to appreciate it. It could be a really grand kitchen, to say the least.

The dining room walls look like real suede or else a great paint treatment and the molding throughout the home is fantastic. Wow, if only I had an extra $55 million and another $7.5 for the home here, I could have two wonderful homes. I'd be bi-coastal, LOL!

Those views are absolutely incredible, too! Of course, SF is one of my favorite places to visit, except for those little tremors. I was there with DH on a business trip and I was shopping in Macy's when there was "just a mild tremor" (according to the salesclerk) and it sent me into a panic. I'm not usually a person who panics but I can't imagine ever getting used to them.

Whoa, that thing is in my township! That's the real estate agency we used when we bought our house!

I think I'll call our agent and tell her we're thinking of "moving on up"....

I didn't realize you had actually been IN the house you posted. I surely cannot say that growing up I had any friends whose bedrooms were on the fourth floor!

Kitchenkelly, a friend of mine bought a home two years ago and paid more than 4 million dollars for it. Guess what? No a/c. Many of the homes in Chicago's north shore area (where she moved) don't have air conditioning. It's too costly to put into these old homes, and they say that being off the lake it's not needed much anyway.

I start sweating just thinking about it.

I guess I didn't think of older homes. The two houses I grew up in did not have a/c. But I was assuming this was newer construction.

With that said, I am still not going to buy that house.

That home is less than 5 minutes from me! Of course, I live in a 2-bedroom townhouse on 0.1 acres of land, but still, a brush with regal living! Can you imagine living like that on a daily basis? I would spend all day in that conservatory! As a local, I am hoping the land is not split up and developed. That seems to be the sad ending of many of these old beautiful Main Line mansions.

Papercrane & MClarke, what a small world--we're neighbors ;) My mother is still down the street from there in the home I grew up in but we're going to be selling it sometime in the next year or so since we're moving to NC. The home we're building will have an "in-law's suite" on the lower level so she'll have her privacy and independence. I'm still nearby in Villanova so only a stone's throw away from my childhood home.

Fortunately, they can't split the land up due to township ordinances. If I remember correctly, existing properties in certain areas must remain intact so in this case, it can't be split into several single family homes. There are so many homes like this in the Main Line area, 70 to 80 years old or more, that are in need of repair and updating. Although there are many people in this country with accumulated wealth who could afford the initial costs, the upkeep on a property like this is tremendous, not to mention the utility costs. My mother's gas and electric bill in the winter is close to our mortgage payment. And I'll never be able to imagine writing a check for a $27k a month mortgage payment unless we hit the lottery. Glad so many people enjoyed the tour and thanks for sharing the other great links with us. I really enjoy looking at these grand old homes.

To answer a few questions posed, no, it's not haunted though there are a couple in this neighborhood that are rumored to be. There are some nearby properties on which the Revolutionary War battles were waged and some are said to be frequented by spirits, LOL!

As far as the AC goes, it may be cooler than some homes in the summer due to its construction but not enough that AC isn't needed. Central AC is a necessity as far as I'm concerned, not a luxury. Plus with the size of the rooms in that home, you'd need two window units for each room.

The home was being lived in by a woman whose children all live out of state now. Much too big for one person, and all though she recently remarried, I imagine they were ready to move on to something that required a lot less upkeep and time. It would be wonderful to see a family with lots of children move in and renovate and enjoy the home.
