I know it's not modern, precisely, justgotabme, but I agree with you (I think--I'm still at this "do I like it because I like it? Or because it's so weird?" phase I often find myself in).

DH likes it too :) I like the curves in it. DH calls it "modern rococo" -- maybe he's seeing what he wants in it, but it's pretty close to the ceiling, it's got curves and crystals and leaves and dare I say some whimsy...hmmmm...

I actually kind of like it. I really like the coppery tones. I wonder if there is such a thing as square or oblong crystals to hang from it? That would make it appear a little more modern to fit in the space.

Sure would help if we could see your room. You must know someone who could take a photo and load it into photobucket for you so we could see?

well, saw it in person, even brought it home--and the feng shui of it is just horrid. SO spiky I thought I was going to cut myself getting it out of the box. It's just a bit much for the space, I fear.

I also found a fixture with faceted crystal balls hanging from a chrome center circle--not the raindrop look (NO more raindrops! Not a PNW-favorite kind of fixture LOL) but faceted balls hanging from chains of little crystal octagons, kind of old-style but from a chrome disk. Putting that and the bedside lamps together, they make sense and I think that's what we'll get. We brought home the 10", since that was all they had, but we're going to get it in a 14". It's not on the Lamps Plus website yet. But it's just kidlike enough for us :) and cool too, IMO. It's closest to the one below but it's faceted and balls, rather than waterdrops :)

I hate to say this, but my first reaction to the one shown was that the ends look like bones or gobs of goo hanging down - sorry - maybe the faceted one on chaines looks better - can't seem to picture it. I like the square one shown below with spirals. How tall are your ceilings?

I'm really having fun looking at all the fixtures you have picked out. Everyone in CA has ceiling fans because of the heat. there are so many neat fixtures nowadays though.

Flyleft, I'm glad that you decided against the first fixture, because I was about to write "No offense, but it looks like a spider to me." Definitely bad feng shui.

springville, LOL -- I wasn't sure if I liked it because I liked it or not, remember? :) Seriously, I can justify almost anything (yes, I know, should have been an attorney :)) so it's hard for me to know what my "gut reaction" is in any given instance. I'm working on it :). Sounds like you and sable had good gut reactions, though.

At Bellacor last night I found several crystal fixtures (more expensive) very much like what I found at Lamps Plus, which is leading me to think this is going to be a rather trendy kind of fixture, like the capiz shells hanging down from circular rods...gives me a bit of concern...hmmm, capiz shells...now that I think about it...

But anyway, this is kind of what it's like, but less extreme in its drop--it's 14" wide, 11" high.

And springville, I do love lighting so much--it's guilt-free jewelry shopping :)

I have spent some time researching capiz shells, and evidently they're quite green--sustainable, vs. the crystal (actually the ones at Lamps Plus were "faux crystal", plastic, I guess, so the natural sustainable things would be far better feng shui), natural, now on the way out so I can feel like I'm *not* in danger of buying a trend :) (I liked them back in the 70s or whenever it was they first came out)...

DH likes the capiz shell look too...so I think that's it! (or maybe we'll change in a few minutes...but I think not--this one feels right) and the price is positively Ikean...it's softer-feeling than any of the other fixtures...

capiz shells are over done and I definitely can't see one of those in your room. I think some of the original ones you and les picked out are better than these recent ones.

Ah, I remember seeing that style a few years ago--looks like a handkerchief over a light -- I like it :) but it's just not quite right for the proportions there.

Re the "overdone": I agree with you, actually--but I'm thinking that since they're going out of style, it will not be able to be called trendy, at least :).

I just can't find the right leafy but not spiky look--DH is really against the spiky thing after that chandelier I posted above. He likes the round chrome disk with crystals, or the capiz shells (in the green-grey color).

I would post pics but my experience with stalking back in 2004 has burned me wrt much more identification...I know it sounds weird but there you have it...just imagine about 12.5x20 room, windows only on west side (shaded by huge fir trees), low ceilings, painted EK pumice (grey-green--like the capiz shell thing), strandwoven bamboo floors with flokatis, big dark goldenbrown upholstered headboard, black walnut furniture--just to renew the mental image :)

I am sorry - the capiz shells don't do it for me, and certainly don't sound like they belong in the room you described again. Frankly, besides being overdone a while back, they honestly can look pretty cheap - and I think your room deserves better.

Why not go for something with a darker finish to pick up on the dark elements in the room? I know this isn't modern, but it is clean-lined and done in the chocolate brown tones.

Re the first link: You know, I'd been looking at that kind of fixture, too. It always appeals to me as I pass by it in LP. I just wondered if it would be kosher since I have the brushed nickel bedside lights...but I like those, definitely. The other problem is the relative severity of the line--I want more flow on the overall shape...

The second: it's o.k., but doesn't do even as much for me as the green capiz shells do--it looks like Everylamp, iykwim...

Have to say, DH is selling the green capiz shells hard. Sustainability and non-Chinese manufacture mean a lot to him...and they're not really green, so much as a warm grey, like the paint color...they really pick it up. What am I going to do?? After finding them, he's even not as in love with the crystals, since they're made in China. We both could live with the crystals, although he prefers the capiz shells--I really do like crystals, they're sweet and have movement and air...did you see the similar-looking fixture I posted? I do like the idea of not buying Chinese-made, though...*sigh*
