If you wait, it goes away on its own in a little while. But yes, it is mighty annoying when it pops up over the top of the thing you want to read so that you can't read it.

use Firefox with adblock plus and you won't see those ads

That's weird, because I've been getting a LANCOME serums pop-up as big as the whole screen, but the 'x' to close it is unreachable(?). If I scroll up and down really quickly it goes away. Like a bothersome fly buzzing around my head. I've only noticed it the last few days.

Total pain. I switched from Explorer to Chrome because I wasn't getting so many popups in Chrome. Now I need to switch to Firefox to get rid of the latest round? *sigh* I think I have become very anti Moen. Grrrrrrr!!

When I tried to check this thread, guess what popped up? Yep. Big old blue Moen ad that covers the entire screen save a tiny little bit on the sides. Thought I'll try waiting it out like cawaps suggested. After a full minute of waiting, still there. Double grrrrrrr!!!!

Going to have to try annsch's trick of scolling up and down really quickly. See if that does that trick. I'm sure I won't have to wait long to try it out.

Lancome ad for me, too. I hit the back and then forward button fast and it seems to make it stop. Annoying as all billy heck.

Frankly I don't understand why Gardenweb just doesn't get into the "modern" age already and figure out a better way to run their website.

It's that @#%&*^!$#! Lancome ad for me, not Moen.

It's extremely annoying as I use a lap and can't get the screen big enough (even with scrolling) to reveal the X to kill it. And it's doubly annoying since it can pop up three times (or more) in close succession when the Forum loads, then when I click on an individual thread and then when I come back to the Forum. It makes "browsing" a very frustrating experience, to say the least.

My solution, which I invite any one else to adopt: send a note to Tamara (or comment in one of her threads) and say that when those ads come up youwill do as I do: leave the site and don't return for 24 hours. Websites monitor their stats closely and if they see a drop off in traffic they'll take action. These ads are not ordinary Google ads, but a format and placement that GW has decided to accept. They can decline them in the future if they understand that it drives traffic away from the site.

I can live without all of them, anyway and all they're creating is bad press, not consumer awareness. Why don't they do a little research!?

What's the point of high speed Internet when ad sites such as amch.questionmart.com hold up the page loads?

I know we take a lot of tracking and advertizing abuse when using these sites, but why do we have to take it all the time?

It does disappear for me, but I'm usually scrolling around impatiently, trying to read the messages through the add. So it may be the scrolling, or clicking outside the ad, that is getting rid of it. I've also never found a close button (I'm on a laptop).

I think my ad is Lancome, and not Moen.

Mine was Lancome, switched to Moen in the past 2 days. Lancome I was able to close if I had my screen very tall because the close was in the upper right corner. The last week or so Lancome seemed to be a bit smaller and easier to see to close. Now it's on to Moen. Sigh. Have to get an ad blocker, but then they block pop-ups I want.

I have an iPad3 and I don't have any of the ad issues. Had original iPad till accident on vacation. Good excuse to replace it.

But I don't get to use flash. And it's harder to post pictures from sites like Houzz. Those ads would drive me batty.

I am glad to know I'm not the only one with a slow load time from things like the amsh or whatever. I was blaming my computer, but maybe it's the site.

It was ads like that that finally drove me to finding and installing adblock. Like liriodendron, I just used to leave the site rather than deal with the pop-ups that blocked content.

Do I feel bad chopping off this revenue stream for the site? Nope. On sites I read regularly, I donate 5 or 10 bucks when they ask. So much better. Also, thanks to whoever steered us to Ghostery to block tracking. If those folks want to track my every move, they can pay me for the priveledge.

P.S. This page currently has 9 trackers on it following whatever you click on.

poohpup - you don't have to lose your bookmarks when you switch browsers - you can export them from your old browser and import them into your new browser - but if adblock plus is available for chrome, I would try that first.

I have the frequently have the lancome one but it goes away quickly. I had the Moen one for the first time yesterday and I could not get it to go away. It was there throughout the entire time I was trying to type a response. I could not see what I was typing. Once I posted it went away. I am hoping not to see it for a long time!

Just got the Lancome ad for the first time and, as annoying as it is, it is no where near as bad as the Moen ad. The Lancome ad took up much less of the page (still couldn't see a darn thing except a bit off to each side) and it went away when I scrolled the screen. For those of you who haven't experienced the Moen ad yet, my sincerest sympathy is extended to you.

Thanks for the great advice and listening to me vent. Seems others are feeling the same frustration. I'm going to write to the powers that be at GW and download the adblocker. I have one that apparently doesn't do a great job.

Since we're talking about browsers, I wanted to share something I just learned. I had been using Firefox, and tonight my friend showed me an article in a non-techy type mag where the person compared browsers, and she said that Firefox has gotten big and cumbersome and slows down your computer. It said to use Google Chrome. So I am tonight, and what a difference! With Firefox, I was always waiting. This is fast. Now I just have to install Adblock for Chrome.

I was using Firefox and guess adblock was installed because I wasn't seeing any ads. But Ginny mentioned the slowness of Firefox, I decided to try out Opera. It is faster and no ads either so guess Adblock must be the default - highly recommend.

What I find so hilarious are those google ads at the bottom of the thread you read. If the thread question is about sinks, there's ads from kohler, silgranit, if faucets, you get moen, delta, you name it.

That bugs me. I'm thinking, who knows what I'm reading and what I need/want? Every Time I see those ads at the bottom of the thread, I feel violated. ;)

How moronic is the management here anyway?

On this forum, imagine a sidebar off to the right of ads from Kohler for sinks and faucets; Aga or Wolf for ranges; M. Texeira for soapstone. Discreet, but always there, with special offers. Not intrusive, but visible and reasonably eye-catching. The clickthrough would be amazing. People would fawn over promotions for Danby marble or Marmoleum or Labor Day sales on CREE lights. There isn't a single more profitable site for the kitchen renovation industry to advertise on in all the Web.

And can you imagine the site using location services to give you names for a kitchen designer or cabinetmaker in your city?

Yet, instead we get repulsive, off-putting makeup ads that make you feel like a rape victim.

Sometimes the human herd needs a little thinning, and disposal of behind the garage, is what I'm thinking.

And instead of making good use of this forum and actually attracting people to their sites, we're getting so turned off by their obnoxious ads that we'll make a point of NOT giving them our business. Popups are bad enough, but to have them so large that they cover the entire screen and you have no way to close them . . . . .??? What the heck?! It's cyber torture as far as I'm concerned!

BTW, I download Adblock Plus and (knock on wood!) no sign of Moen or Lancome! THANK YOU!!!!
