I think framing the existing would be best.

I don't think two would look right, since there isn't something to ground the second. It would look strange having two mirrors hanging above a counter with one sink. Hanging only one would look strange because you have to center it on the counter OR above the sink. You just aren't going to find a better deal than the one large one you have.

Drats, I was afraid that's what I would hear. Why they only put one sink on that vanity I'll never know.

Frame the one you have now...and save your pennies for a full bath remodel later down the road.

You could make the Lowes' style easily if you've got some woodworking skills around the house. Maybe have the existing mirror cut down a bit in size and frame it out like the Lowes one. It would look very nice if you're not remodeling any time soon.

Not to mention that you're likely to have some doozy drywall repair from taking down that big mirror - those things were usually glued to the wall with a LOT of glue, and taking them down rips the heck out of the wall. I agree with the previous posters, save your money - perhaps for having the plumbing run for a second sink and putting in a nice counter with double sinks.

Laurie, I have a giant vanity with one sink in our master. It's centered, at least, but not super useful for two people!

I know that most just can't stand the huge sheet of mirror that was used in the 70s-80s, but it really is practical. I like seeing the whole picture in the morning. I've been able to catch some potentially embarrassing things as a result! It also enhances the minimal light bathrooms usually have.

Here's your current mirror framed. The contemporary black finish didn't look right, so I changed it to a brown for the cabinetry. The last two pics are in black and show different widths. I like the arch!

Laurie, I am pondering the same question for my guest bathroom. Just a single sink vanity though. My mirror is not glued to the wall. But I do have those little plastic mirror holders that I am seeing you also have, right below your soffit, above the mirror. So if you frame your existing mirror (which I am leaning towards), how will you handle the clear plastic dealy bobbers? And how do you make the framing stick to the mirror?

PS- I probably missed it somewhere, but what did you finally settle on in your son's room?

rouguevalley - Wow, what a good memory. I can't believe you remembered my son's room. It's actually almost finished. I ordered a valance for his window just this morning and we still need to get 2 banners for the walls. If we don't get the banners soon, I'll go ahead and take some pictures. I'm not sure how to handle those plastic dealy bobbers. I remember somone saying before to replace the plastic ones with flat metal ones, but since mine are coming from the ceiling, instead of the wall, I don't know if I can still do the frame. Anyone know how to get around that?

squirrel - I was picturing using the flat trim like in your last three pictures, but the top piece is what I loved so much about the one at Lowes so I like that 1st one you did the best. I love the arch on it also. DH is pretty handy with wood, so I'll see if this is something he can do. Do y'all think it would look okay to have that top molding with the soffet above it?

I see that darn soffit doesn't extend the full length of the room! The crown piece wouldn't have to be that large. I had to angle and stretch it from the Lowes pic, so it's somewhat distorted.

Was playing around with a head-on view. So the crown piece only juts out a small amount, I'd do a shallow profile, as in the virtual. The v.small dust-catcher on the end wouldn't bother me for the overall effect. The detail below the crown could be a half-round if the crown piece you find isn't very tall, so it gives the same effect. On some of them I actually extended that piece over the edge just a tad -- I guess you'd want to wrap it over the frame edge. Tried a doo-dad applique piece or little paint design too :)

The last few virtuals are with squared off half-round trim pieces, so everything is flush with the soffit, which maybe you'd prefer.

Those are some pretty mirrors.

I don't know your budgetary concerns, but there is a "fix" for a frameless mirror that will cost you about $3, you know. You can hot-glue marbles around it and they come in tons of colors. I like the clear. It gives my mirror sort of a "murano" look and people always say "oooo" when they see it.

We had the same problem as your, huge mirror,one sink. We just made a frame for around the mirror and where the little plastic things go DH just cut it out a little so the wood set back even. He just glued the frame to the mirror.If you do this be sure to paint the back of the wood black first so you don't see the reflection of the wood in the mirror.

Before making a new wood frame, you can replace those clear plastic mirror holders with metal ones, which have a much lower profile.

mclarke - Back when that other thread was going, you'll see that I posted a picture of how far my plastic clips stick out, but then the post died. Should I still replace them with the metal ones since they're coming from the ceiling? I'm thinking my only chance of making it work is if I use the molding at the top like squirrel posted.

Thanks, squirrel. I hadn't even thought of it sticking out past the mirror. The straight edge might be better, but I just don't like it as much as the flared edge.

Well, if you have to, or can, take the mirror down, maybe have it cut a bit smaller to make room for it on the sides. It would seem making it a bit smaller all around would be the case then (top and bottom too). It looks as though the mirror stops at about the same vertical point that the soffit does which would make the crown jut out a bit. Are you planning on painting in there too?
