I don't want to pick a shower curtain until I've picked a wall color.

Well, Kelly that is going make it more difficult to find a curtain. Tons of wall colors not so many shower curtains.

Paint the walls white

Buy the shower curtain first and use it to guide your color choices. There are a million paint colors, not so many shower curtain colors. That shade of blue does not work because it leans gray and your countertop, vanity and tiles are warm.

Not the blue and I agree get the shower cutain then choose wall color .I personally do not like shower curtains so if this is not a rental maybe check out glass shower screens instead it woulld make the bathroom feel a lot larger and be on less this to deal with when choosing wall color.Before doing anything I suggest you get some decent lighting in there A new bathbar LED 4000K would be agood start.

I would paint it a similar color to the wall tile, which will give you a fairly neutral background, although you are not going to be able to completely ignore that granite countertop.

If it's a modular size it may be worth swapping that vanity top out for something that isn't so bossy.

^^That is what I would do. That top is small and would be well worth the cost to kick it out of the room, IMO. I would get a rectangular sink in the process for an updated look.

I agree with @palimpsest - i would would try calm everything down and go low contrast - painting the walls a color close to the wall tile

i would also hang a white textured linen or cotton shower curtain - if the vanity is not high-quality wood then I would paint that creamy white and replace the light fixture. there are also easy DIY kits to frame out the mirror - I think it’s a great little bathroom, it just needs some TLC and simplification

Paint is the last thing to pick, because there are so many options and you can almost always have a custom color created if you can’t find the exact one. Look for a shower curtain. Here are some ideas for paint - keep in mind that pictures don’t always capture what your eye sees, so these are just starting points for what look like paints that work with your fixed elements. Always sample before committing. I also agree that finding a simpler, more neutral vanity top may be best.

Enough with telling people to get too cool Led 4000k lights! You need to research lighting and color. Something I did since I'm an artist.

You do not have to make sure your lighting is all 4000k. In reality, CRI is more important to get accurate color. The general rule is: The higher the CRI, the better the color rendering capacity. CRI is independent of color temperature. These are two different things. For example, a 5000K (daylight color temperature) fluorescent light source could have a CRI of 75, but another 5000K fluorescent light source can have a CRI of 90.

Food for thought: when people start getting cataracts, they tend to see things in a more yellow or even brown tint. I sometimes wonder if that’s why some people lean toward the cooler end of the spectrum. That being said, I don’t think 4000k is terrible for a bathroom or even a dark kitchen. It’s actually fairly neutral and still has a slight yellow tint. To my eyes, 3500k starts to look too yellow. Now 5000k is too much for most indoor places (though I use them in my basement). You are correct that CRI is important for color rendering, which may be important in a bathroom, especially if you are relying on it to put on natural looking makeup. But going too yellow or too blue will also affect the way we see color to some extent.

After my mother had cataract surgery many years ago she came in my house and told me how much she liked my living room paint color. It was a pale yellow beige at that time. She said before her surgery the whole room looked like it was way too yellow and brown.

@cpartist I wish bulbs had the CRI on the box - I spent forever trying to learn about lighting..lumens, CRI, color temperature, there's so much! And then spent forever getting irritated at Menards b/c very little has that information, nor is it always easy to find online. Aside from the fact that every day Joe doesn't have any clue what CRI is ARGH my dad and I went round and round about it - to him you just go grab whatever bulb is cheapest and he thinks I'm imagining things. (and also about paint colors that look blue or purple or yellow in certain lighting, which is my nemisis)

I would paint this bathroom Simply White. The dark counter, tile, and vanity need a brighter, whiter background, IMO. Then just get a simple, spa-like waffle weave white cotton shower curtain. No patterns, just texture.

If you buy a shower curtain first a paint store can color match paint to the curtain. Matching the tile like la_la_girl said is also a good idea. The countertop is so limiting I would replace it. The vanity top doesn't really seem to go with the tile - although maybe they look better together in person? The blue is distracting so I can't tell from the picture. Using BM Simply White like Sabrina suggests is an easy choice because it's a nice warm white, but it's pretty white. You might not like it. A similiar shade in SW is Alabaster. If the countertop stays then you might want more of an off white to reduce the contrast. Bring home a dozen paint chips to start and see what appeals to you.
