Not knowing what you have to use or work with it's difficult, but can tell you this do not line everything up like soldiers in a line, if you just simply pull those candle sticks forward it will look much better. A low crystal bowl, with nice green apples or yellow pears, fake or real in it, right in front of your mom's plate would be nice also.

I like what you have on the buffet already, the colors are great with the wall, but agree about not lining them up in a row. I also like the color of the mirror but not the shape, should be more rectangular so it is taller imo but that depends I guess on your ceiling height.

I don't have any other items to work with but am willing to buy them, so suggest away!!

Very nice buffet! To add an "organic" element, perhaps try adding some rocks to the glass vase. Then I would pull the plate in front of the vase at an angle. Then, I would get couple of books with nice covers and put them under the vase to ensure there is enough height difference between the vase & the plate.

Just a few thoughts, I would think about what colours I want to pull in (looks like green and maybe copper(?)...it's actually a matter of trial and error, keep adding & subtracting until you like it, think of adding different height, texture, shape, etc.

Black candlesticks on a black table do not offer any contrast for interest. Do you have wood ones? Can you paint the black ones?

I did think about putting some type of rocks in the vase but was not sure if I should go with natural/brown/tan colored rocks or colored beads? Also, what do you think of adding a lamp? I like this style of buffet lamp but I think the buffet is too short to have 2 lamps??

I am open to different candle holders. I pulled those from another area of the house. What color do you suggest other then black? (the buffet is not actually black but a very very dark brown. It is the Kipling buffet from Crate and Barrel).

Yes my favorite color which I use throughout my house is apple green and we like it with neutrals which fillagirl noticed.

No problem! I bought it at Crate and Barrel. It is the Kipling Buffet. I have a huge room so I really could have bought a larger one, but I loved the look of it. I like the clean lines and the color.

I hope I get tons of comments and suggestions! I need some inspiration people!!

I think that if you take a wider shot of the buffet, that shows where it is and what's in the room, where GWers can see the type of furniture that is in it, etc, you will generate more ideas about your tablescape. Then, it will be easier to see the style of the room, colours, etc. and decorate it in relation to where it is & what's around it.

I love the items that you have chosen! And think that you've done a wonderful job!

In the tall clear vase -- yes -- add some dark natural "stones" -- the ones that you usually find in small bags.

And yes! another vote for lamps -- and those ones are marvellous! Great choice!

This is what I would do:

Move the vase a little closer in to the middle.

Take the green candlesticks, and move them closer to the vase. Tall one next to the vase, but moved closer to the middle of the chest. Smaller one next, but moved a little farther back. (it should be close to the center of the chest).

Then take the plate and place it catty-cornered about half way between where it is now and the candles. There should be about the same 'negative' space on either end.

Love your accessories, they just are spaced way too far apart. It's like three things that are competing for your eye, not making one statement together.

Play around - I think you've got the right pieces, just not the right arrangement.

One more suggestion- you could put some black/grey stones in the bottom of your vase for more interest/weight.

The first thing I would do is get the mirror hung. That can change the feel of whatever else is there, because it tends to multiply items and the overall effect.

I would not use two lamps - as you said, the buffet is smaller, plus that feels like too traditional a look for your new piece.

Each of the items you have is very nice, but all together they are totally unrelated in color, in style - but unfortunately too similar in height.

I would find a different spot for the glass vase - I think it will be lost against the mirror. But if you do decide to keep it there, ,and want to add rocks, please do so carefully. I know of several people who have cracked glass vases (expensive or not) by dropping stones into the vase. You need to lay the vase almost on its side and slide the stones down the side, then gently turn it upright.

Also, don't feel compelled to fill the entire width of the top with stuff. Sometimes each piece can be better appreciated if there is visual breathing room.

They have bags of stones at the dollar store for the bottom of your vase. Then some dark seed pods for added interest in your vase.{{!gwi}}

Thanks for all the ideas! Wouldn't the glass lamp get lost since it is clear or would it balance the vase? I would love to NOT have the vase on the buffet, but my husband loves it. It is from Tiffanys and was a wedding gift. He said it is the nicest thing we own so we should display it! (another husband with too many decorating opinions!) i will hang the mirror over the weekend and take more shots of the room. Thanks!!!!

I agree with Les to be very careful when adding rocks or glass beads to any glass vase, but exspecially this beautiful vase. Personally I think once you get some stones into it you'll love it.
Here's a virtual I did with what you have adding a table runner to help the candlesticks show better. I also added a bowl I "made" from your candle for your fifth item. Remember things work best in odd numbers. That's one rule that do use on a regular basis. Most "decor rules" I toss out the window.

Decorating for me is like a foreign language. I find it so overwhelming that I do nothing. It really does not come naturally to me so I appreciate all your different ideas and suggestions!!

No problem lovetoshop. I love to "paint". LOL. Too bad we don't live close to one another. You could shop for me. I don't really care to shop that much anymore. It's never been the same for me since my Mom passed away in 1995. We were shopping buddies. I have to be in desparate need for something before I'll go into town or the city to shop.
About decor being a foreign language to you....you've come to the right place to learn. So sit back and relax. The way you set the items wasn't BAD. Just different than what others do. If you truly like it that way, then by all means go with it. It's your home! And the mirror behind it as it is may have made all the difference in the world to you. Sometimes "little soldiers" works by the way. I've done it. I've seen it done elsewhere too.

Never take decor rules as if they were written in stone. Think of them as suggestions. Things tried that worked more often than not. Kind of like phonics, you know? Shouldn't that have been spelled Fonics? Yeah, according to the "rules". It seems "rules" were truely meant to be broken. Laws on the other hand...... Not such a good idea.
