Here's an odd kitchen in an odd house my son found once... I believe the house was a "shell house", in the shape of a nautilus....

Interesting, I guess, lol. I wonder how the pods can be held up by those narrow "stems". Crazy architecture.

I agree with Bee. The texture thing creeps me out. Reminds me of a cave. Then there'd be bats...and...oh...yikes!

Some aspects to this house I appreciate, but the hardware on the cabs looks like slugs are crawling across them... ugh... Otherwise, I think it is quirky and fun.
I'd hate to have to dust it though (shudder).
It must be almost impossible to figure out market value for something so unique. I hope the new buyers love it for what it is because so much effort went into it. It would be a shame if it lost its character....

I don't much care for the rougher finish used on the interior - blown-in gunite or something similar? - but it's clearly inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's magnificent (and more elegant) Johnson Wax Administration Building in Racine, Wisc., now on the National Register of Historic Places and one of the ten FLW sites nominated for inclusion in the World Heritage Sites listing.

Not to my taste, but certainly unique, with a quirky charm. It feels very much like an adult's personal playhouse.

The shell-shaped house in the second set of photos is in CA, I believe. If it's the same one, it was a remodel done by an architect for his parents. It's quite an amazing design, especially the exterior, smack in the middle of a conventional neighborhood. With the narrow lots we have here where homes are only a few feet away from each other, it's quite startling.

A pet peeve of mine... a Sub-Zero fridge with random cheapie range.

Thanks for the peek holligator. But the creep factor is there for me as well. Cleaning that would be a major issue for me but I guess if you can afford a million dollar mushroom, you probably don't have to worry about cleaning it yourself :) For the discerning buyer for sure.

I've seen the exterior in person. Nothing creepy about it. Kind of '70s goofy. You have to smile every time you see it, although I kind of doubt it's going to be a full million-dollar smile.

I was struggling to pinpoint my issue with the kitchen. It's the slug/leech factor--you all nailed it!

Thanks, Nikoleta, for posting the link with the additional pics. It was fun to see more of this house. I love the front door! I was struck, however, how some items seemed so out of place. That very traditional dining room furniture, for instance, doesn't belong at all. In the very interesting bathroom, the basic, boring white toilet looks odd.

I do hope they find a buyer who will appreciate all the quirks. This house takes "thinking outside the box" to a whole new level!

I don't mind the cabs at all. I don't see slugs nor am I creeped. I also like the wonky shapes and floor plan. Too much of our lives are tucked into square boxes. But I have a real issue with all those textured walls and ceilings. I've never liked that look, although I like unusual tiling, which is textured.

Zillow price history shows it running along in the mid $400,000's then suddenly it spikes to $1.1M? Must have been after they added the 'slugs'. lol

As to the price hike, I'm pretty sure these owners added a whole additional section - the "cave" I think.

The location is nice, almost in a county park (hence "Park Road"), in one of the nicest suburbs of Rochester.

It looks like a hobit house that is elevated on the long stems. The decription of a hobit housen where Bilbo Baggins live, is that there are no straight walls or halls. Every thing is curved in a hobit house. Windows are round.

I wonder if they can market it to the Lord of the Rings fans?

The first thing I thought of was slugs, too. Or something that was in a Star Trek movie. Don't remember what they were called, but they weren't good. Seems like it crawled into your ear and then takes over your body....

The 70's wasn't kind to homes. The Avacado appliances are finally gone but I'm still living with Walnut veneer paneling, zero clearance fireplace and something like Z-brick on the fireplace facade.

I've been to the Mushroom house too. It is fun to look at, especially that mid morning I pulled into the park road when deer were right beneath.

Oh my gosh, that's so funny! I immediately thought of Star Trek, too.
