If there is one thing in design I am sick of beyond belief, it's prioritizing design decisions for resale. Now, it's one thing if you are planning on doing a quick flip or if you are in a starter home you plan on leaving within a few years. In those cases, yes, you want to stay neutral and try to appeal to as many potential buyers down the road as possible. However, when it's your own home, the kitchen is the heart of it, and you should only worry about making it your own, and not how strangers on the internet will rate it!
Tile is a fairly permanent feature to install - when your tastes change or if you are trying to sell your home, it is not the easiest design element to switch out. However, it is also such a great opportunity to truly put your own stamp on your kitchen, and my philosophy is to go with what you love. The following kitchens all have at least one thing in common: They feature spectacular unique tile work. These choices dazzle and make these kitchens jump out at me. It makes me want to inhabit these kitchens, and to know more about the people who live in these homes.

Using this tile as a backsplash and then filling the area underneath the hood makes such a strong graphic statement.
This red is such a bold choice, and marks the kitchenette nook as a separate area in this open space.
The tile gives this kitchen a splash of fun color and energy.
This cabinet and oven enclosed nook provides a great opportunity for patterned tile.
Here is a closer look at the tiles that make up the pattern shown above.
This subtle and reflective tile adds to the beauty of this elegant kitchen.
Glass tile adds so much light to this kitchen. The counter-to-cabinet height is the perfect choice.
The small squares and dark grout make this tile stand out as a design element. Also, check out the way the upper open shelf is covered in tile.
This low backsplash is the perfect scale for adding a jolt of lime green via the tile work.

A backsplash I don't like will never deter me from buying a house...a countertop won't either, but I would deduct the cost of a bad countertop from an offer, but not a backsplash.
So glad to read this perspective. We plan to stay in our house for a long while but do sometimes question design decisions, mainly because we like to put our own unique "stamp" on things. For example, when we retiled our back hallway, we inserted tiles specific to our ethnic heritage. We love them, and we'll keep our fingers crossed that the new buyers are Polish and Latvian!
