Finally finished the Laundry Room...almost.

It's done enough that I can focus on a different project or three. I'd like to see something on the walls additional cabinets above the old fridge but overall I'm very happy with how it turned out.

The room wasn't bad to begin with considering I had already done quite a bit from when we moved in but it wasn't fun enough.

After repairing walls, painting and installing tile floors

I wanted red washer and dyer but mine were almost new and I wasn't convinced about painting them so I painted my cabinets red instead. I love them. We made new doors to get rid of the dated arch. I also changed the hardware from ORB to satin nickel. I added glass bubble mosaic backsplash, and painted the walls a dark gray. Nixed the chandelier due to offset doors and crazy shadows.

DH and I did start a project on the breaker box cover and still have some more to do on it.

DH is glad it's finally done enough and I'm already on to the next project but keeping my eyes open for something awesome for the walls.

Marthaelena I tried to post to you yesterday, but didnt realize after I posted to Anne that I couldnt post again, so here were some answers to your previous post The sketches were done in paint and I really had no clue how to draw it out so it definitely is not done to scale. I was just trying to capture the idea of what I was thinking of. I did measure the bathroom and know I needed to keep it at least 5' so wasn't sure if that would work without taking more space out of the office because I'll need some sort of hallway there. Would love to see what you sketched if you can post it. I posted our plan. If you were referring to the space where Anne mentioned the closet should go, it is a hallway. I'm not sure I would like the closet out in the hallway. Id like to keep that in the mudroom to have access to it without having to track stuff in the hallway. Now, I cant describe how thankful I am that you were able to capture what I want. Thank You!! Love your new design (and so does my husband). It captures everything I wanted and I think probably the only thing that will really work there giving the size. I do wish and agree that my laundry room could be longer (or wider), but wider wont work if I keep the mudroom bench (which I want). Not sure how much more I can take out of the office without it looking odd and would it be odd to have your laundry room across the whole front of your house? I would prefer not to, but I didnt want a formal dining or living room because I knew wed never use it, so that is how we filled in that spot. I just didnt want to come in the front door and be right in our great room. I wanted a foyer. Not sure what other design would look good unless I extended the laundry room and made a closet on the other side by the foyer (take out the current closet at the foyer) and make the front half of the room an office. Since you moved the garage door down some is there room to put a small shelf there for things to drop off/pick up etc when going out the door or for charging cell phones, etc.? Or maybe I could put it at the end of my bench. I will leave the wall up by the basement. I think it looks nicer too. Anne (or marthaelena see notes below) Thanks for looking over the plan and for the reminder about the plumbing dryer duct. Ill make note to remember that (which is why I should increase the space a little). My girlfriends builder didnt think of that and her LR is only 5 and it is pulled out away from her wall so you can barely get in from the garage. I did not like a 20 inch door on the toilet area of the master bathroom, but wasnt sure what else to do there. We wanted a larger shower, which is now too big IMO, but not sure how else to rearrange the bathroom to get the most use out of our space. I wanted a larger closet. We originally had a closet where the pantry is, but took that away so I could have a walk in pantry. Maybe since the kitchen is so big we could move the pantry back into the kitchen. I didnt like the fact that I had to walk around the sink area and past the master bedroom to get to it, but again, not sure what else to do there. Any suggestions/drawings on those two areas? The draftsmen told us he left the shower and toilet area the way it was because of the angle together. Anne would still love to see your drawing of the 1st option you suggested. Thank you again for the kind words! ratrem: The peninsula is approx. 4.5 ft wide x 5.8 ft long. We have rollout trays on the kitchen side where all of our everyday dishes, silverware, placemats , etc. are stored (we eat most of our meals on the peninsula) and fairly shallow storage on the dining room side (stuff we don't use that often like crockpot, apple corer, pump pots, etc. are stored in there). julcarr: The ceilings are the original height of what was once our formal living room and they are 12 ft. tall. I'm not one for a lot of "stuff" and it was really tough for me to put the glass cabinets in the top, but with the narrow, tall kitchen, we needed to have something to add an airiness to the space and to help break up the mass of white cabinetry. I had a very small collection of white pitchers already, so that's what I've decided to display in them. The kitchen has such a stream-lined look, I've enjoyed seeing the curviness of the pitchers...helps soften all the harsh edges I think and it gives me an excuse to go antiquing! The window is 88" wide x 78" tall. The two side windows open to the outside and really brings the outdoors in. jalsy6: I have been pleasantly surprised with the range. I would have loved to explore options of some more high-end appliances, but with this being a whole house remodel, I couldn't dump all of our money just into the kitchen. We didn't have room for wall ovens and have no gas available. That narrowed our options way down. I like the look of it, it has a shallow bottom oven, and so far my baked goods have come out far better than they did with my old oven. So, all in all, we give it two thumbs-up! michoumonster: Funny you ask about those particular light fixtures. The chandelier in the dining room was the original fixture to the house. We bought it from Pottery Barn over 15 years ago and I like it as much today as I did then. The light in the foyer is from Home Depot. It is from the Thomasville line. I remember it being very reasonably priced and I think seems to be of pretty good quality. colorfast: The table is from Pottery Barn (Toscana). I had my eye on it from the beginning of the remodel and actually planned the space to make sure it would fit. It has two leaves that go on each end. At Thanksgiving, we were able to formally seat 16 people. I like the bench seating and especially in our space. It allows people to sit with their backs to the dining room wall and visit amongst everyone in the living room and kitchen. It also eliminates random chairs being pulled out into the walkway between the couch and dining area keeping the area tidy and uncluttered. I swore off fussiness with this remodel...no more straightening chairs, towels (only hooks for us now), and various other things that just drove me crazy. You can still catch me fluffing pillows on a frequent basis although. As far as how comfortable they are, I suppose that depends how long you linger. We're middle aged, and our friends like the casualness of them. I think people feel more inclined to have a seat rather than pulling out a chair and spinning it around to visit with others in the space. When our parents come to dinner, I try putting them in the upholstered chairs just knowing they'll be more comfortable there. I think if I had more of a "formal" dining room area, chairs would probably be the way to go. For your question about emotional issues, yes, there were some moments of emotional angst, especially when packing up and deciding on what to purge. With the entire house doing a complete 180, hardly anything we had was going to work in the new space. But, like I said earlier, it is our love of this home and all the memories it holds that encouraged us through the project. I love it more now knowing that we didn't give up on it. I honestly think we'll never leave.

Last night I was chomping at the bit to put stuff on the shelves. DH suggested "how about just the light stuff?" So I moved in the cereal boxes. I had second thoughts this morning and took them back out. I've decided to wait until next weekend (which is just over 2 weeks since the second coat). It will be a hard week for me. I'm not good at delayed gratification. Cotehele, you couldn't possibly put an adjustable shelf pantry in that amazing kitchen of yours. It just wouldn't be right! Kevinw1, I seriously thought about painting my pantry a very pale gray or white and doing the shelves and trim in the blue/green color of Julia Child's cabinets. I was just worried that it might be too busy or that I might get tired of it. I certainly don't want to have to repaint any time soon. All that cutting in would drive me insane. I do like the idea though. Desertsteph and warmfridge, the light is vintage and I found it on the internet from a lighting place near Ontario. Fixture by fixture, we've put vintage lighting back into all of the rooms in our house. I've found most of it on ebay...lots of good fixtures out there if you're willing to put in the elbow grease polishing (me) and know how to rewire (DH). antiquesilver, thanks for the suggestion to wax the shelves. I have a can of butchers wax and will give it a try once I'm sure the paint has cured. breezygirl, regarding shelf spacing, there were a few items that I knew I wanted in specific places, and then my carpenter and I just figured out how to divide what was left over evenly. I wanted to put my enamel fish poacher on the very top shelf (you can see it on the top shelf in the before picture). I can't reach it easily, so I might as well store something that I like to look at that doesn't get used. The next two shelves will hold my old cooking magazines in magazine storage boxes. The shelf with the electrical outlet is for the toaster oven. I had him make this shelf a little higher than needed in case I have a different toaster oven down the road. The two shelves above the toaster oven and the two shelves below are all the same height (10 1/2") which is tall enough for any single item I buy and tall enough for two cans stacked with space to spare. Probably more detail than you wanted, LOL. honorbiltkit, the pantry has a pocket door (salvaged), but I keep it open most of the time. I like to look at food. : )

Chloe's Mom, I was joking about the ugly--the swivel is fine. But, yes, very dangerous. I've been plopped onto the floor by these several times. Swivel pedestal chairs would be cool! Very mid-century. We had them when I was little (Atomic age, but swivel). I thought of orange grout too! And nixed it for the same reasons. But also because I don't want to call attention to the floor. I had a really dynamic floor once and learned my lesson. If you have a really really great floor people will look at it. I want them to look up. :-) Kris, it's the perimeter that will have the pond. I flirted with granite that looks like river rock for the island, but wised up. It would have drawn all the attention, and I really don't like granite for kitchen counters. Hence the tile. :) The inspiration for the pond was really the tiles. The frogs. And waterlilies, vines, bamboo and ginko blossoms. I just loved them. And everyone has been giving me grief because the giant I painted where there are no upper cupboards is going away. This'll give 'em something to look at.

I love those red cabinets. The whole room is wonderful and it is certainly "fun".

The supports under your shelf should only be 1 x 2". I dn't see any support at all under the long side against the wall. If there is nothing there, the shelf will bow in the middle from it's own weight.
The side pieces obviously don't have to be fixed, but if you replaced those big supports with 1 x 2" cut to the proper length it would look nicer. I would paint the pieces the wall color before installing them.
You sure did a lot of work for a laundry room but it has paid off!

Thanks everyone! I know it's probably not everyone's cup of tea but it makes me happy!

trail- yes that is us...from a picture on an anniversary trip. DH airbrushed the silhouettes and I was supposed to do some different something around it but failed. He will probably do some more airbrush work as he gets time.

cindy- I agree the side supports should be shorter and narrower. You'd think during one of the 4 times I've painted this room, I could've fixed it. DH was hesitant to shorten them because they are currently in studs and doesn't like relying on just drywall to support anything. I do plan to add a back support to help with the center support. I'd like to add a piece of wood to the front to make it a little beefier looking.

The old fridge is awesome. Even better is that it works, has never been serviced and my family is the 2nd owner. I think I figured it out to be '31 model.

jenna- the rest of the house is definitely in progress but is finally coming around to my way of thinking. LOL

itltrot, the fact that hubby wanted to hit a stud explains the problem, lol. At first I thought you didn't know much about carpentry, but since you changed the cabinet doors I realized someone there knows plenty!

Under the circumstances I think just painting the supports the wall color would be a sufficient fix. The room is just adorable...I hadn't noticed the fridge but it certainly is a wonderful feature!

Btw, I'm just curious...why is the water heater on a stand? I assume it is to make it easier to service because it's behind the stairs?

cindy- actually we aren't guilty of the boards or shelf being installed. They were there when we bought the house. We've just never changed them. I painted them wall color once but it made the shelf look really odd floating there and being so "thin".

In our area there is a code that hot water tanks must be elevated 18" if they are garage level. Or something like that. I guess fuel vapors and pilot lights aren't friends.

What a great laundry room. If it's like many layouts, you go through it multiple times a day on the way to the garage, so it *matters* that it be a nice space go through!

I love the glass bubble mosaic backsplash!

Interesting about elevating the water heater. Thanks for the explanation. Maybe it is code here as well but our heater is in the basement. It seems one can never learn all there is to learn about home ownership!
