Loribee--That is a beautiful room. It looks like a magazine picture. I was at Home Goods today and saw similar lamps. So, speaking of Home Goods, I bought a black lamp there just to try for color and shape. If I would keep this lamp, I would have to buy a new shade because the shade that comes with it has a silver and black design on the inside and when the lamp is lit, doesn't provide much light in the room. Then I stopped at Goodwill and actually found a lamp I had looked at last week was still there!! I like this lamp (for $7.00!!) and will keep it regardless of whether or not I use it in the bedroom. It, of course, didn't come with a shade or even a harp, but I'd rather choose my own shade anyway. Please note, the shade I put on the lamp is just one from another lamp around the house and I know it is too small. I know many are encouraging me to go with a pop of color with the lamps, but there's still a part of me that likes the soft, relaxing cream and black in the room. Also, I think the pictures don't show the true relation of the size of the headboard to the size of the lamps. The two I just posted are both around 28" tall and seem pretty good to my IRL eye. Any opinions on the latest two choices???

oceanna, The rose one is a bolster pillow I purchased in a speciality store. It travels all over the living room. Sometimes on the piano stool, sometimes on the sofa and sometimes on the piano chair in the photo. One time put up a thread on how to make a simple bolster pillow. If you like to make pillows do a search. The two pillows with the tapestry (the Spanish dancer and the white Gardenia) first I made the pillows, then hand sewed the tapestry on... then hand sewed on the trim. Then stuffed them...On both these pillows I used the brown velour -- that we used to upholstered the brown chair with in the LR. I bought so much of it, I could make even more pillows with it. None of these pillows are washable. In the LR they get no wear and tear. In the family room, (on the sofa)when they get worn or dirty I make new ones. Ebay has quite a few dog needlepoint tapestries. I have the sweetest little nedlepont pillow from Ebay, that I just added fringe to and it's just precious. The hand made needlepoint is expensive as compared to the printed tapestries, however they are wonderful. I love them.

No wonder you are confused. My head was spinning after reading all of the opinions! I was following the original post, but this is my first look at your follow-up. I agree with the others about finding another shade for first lamp if you decide to use it. The present shade is too short and it is the wrong style. My suggestion would be to take the lamp into a lighting store that sells shades. There you will have some expert advice as well as the option to "try on" various shades, much in the same way that you would try on clothes to determine the most flattering fit and combination. Think of the gas you will save! These are some guidelines for shades that I have found useful: 1. Match the base  think size, shape, style, color. Your goal is to match the mood of the base. 2. Compliment the base  the shade should make the base look better without competing with for attention (like that patterned shade on the metal lamp) 3. Hide the switch  the shade should just barely cover the switch (usually the height of harp + ½ inch). Try different sized harps, or add a shade riser to fine-tune. 4. Sizing Rules of Thumb: (1) Shade height should be about ¾ the height of the base (2) Bottom of shade should be wider than widest part of the base. (3) Shade width should be approximately equal the height from bottom lamp base to the top of the lamp stem, (just below the socket cap) I like both lamps. I think either one will be beautiful, but I would not use both of them in that room. Rather than another ginger jar, it would be nice to use a different architectural form on the console. I like the console very much. I do not like the metal/glass (marble?) lamp with the patterned shade. I would look for gorgeous buffet lamps. I am thinking wooden with an antique gold finish (very simple, but elegant). These are high end lamps, but use as examples. If you want the console to appear more sophisticated, remove the dried flower wreath that is resting on the books below, and remove the wicker basket with the greens from the top of the console. Replace it with a grouping of three (the magic number) similar objects (candles, boxes, ceramics, etc.) of different height and proportion. Good luck and keep up the good work. I'm going with chijim but am going to be even more of an outlier - I like bedside lamps AND bedside tables to NOT match. Looks way more interesting to me. Find a lamp that you think looks good in the space overall, and that plays well with the rest of the room, including your existing lamp. Totally different (IMO) is just fine.
