We have a small 12x12 garden room (no tv, but a fireplace) with lots of windows and 3 doors. I REALLY wanted a comfy, cozy sectional and didn't care if it was the only furniture plus tables. I envisioned one side of the sectional being a chaise and perfect for napping...okay back to reality...

DH wanted a sofa and chairs. He won. He pretty much selected all the furniture for that room. It worked out fine. We ended up with a small sofa on the solid wall, and a swivel comfy chair in a corner to the right of the fireplace. It swivels out of the way so the French door can open. Then we could only put a small antique wooden chair that's more for looks than sitting. Two small tables flanking the sofa and a bench that doubles as a coffee table and ottoman.

As for leather and fabric, it works for us. We have two leather chairs, a fabric chair and a fabric sofa in our family room. I know some folks cringe at the suggestion of LazBoy, but they do have some styles that don't look like they were purchased in the 70s. We have 4 chairs in our house from LazBoy. Not all are recliners.

I'm not going to clog up this thread with photos, but if any of this information is interesting, I will post what you want to see.

Cameron, I'm laughing because we went to Lazboy yesterday as a last resort. You are right they did have some nice looking furniture, I was very surprised. If you don't mind I would like to see how the sofa and chairs look in your room. It is close enough to our size and I would like to see how crowded or not crowded it is.

Did you hear anything or get any sense of quality of construction of his pieces? I love their looks and applaud LazyBoy for bringing him on.

If it's for Tv watching then function takes precedence. Put the TV where light won't shine directly on the screen. Better to come from the sides. Then, the furniture you choose and where you put it depends on how people like to sit/lie while watching TV and how many people will be doing that at the same time. People should have a space to put down a drink, TV remote, eyeglasses, snack, etc. This is not the front parlor; it's a family "den", so choose accordingly.

Dark leather appears to take up more space than pale leather; some leather pieces are slim (note: scandinavian modern and european furniture is often smaller). Mixing leather and fabric is fine but will go better if the pieces have equal visual weight.

Sounds like the kind of place where everyone will want to hang out. Enjoy it!

We are almost finished with our kitchen and used Saybrook Sage too, isn't it yummy?!!! Is this tv room going to be used the majority of the time with just the two of you or are there other family members that often watch. I mention it because two recliners might fit well along with a loveseat. Also, I'm sure you'll be covering the windows with something but be aware of the glare that comes from the light in the kitchen. We just knocked out a "see thru" from our kitchen into the livingroom too and have to make sure we can actually see the tv during the day.

Oh my goodness I didn't think of the glare from the window. I have to mention this to DH.

It will only be the two of us watching and we thought of the two recliners and a loveseat. But because of the size of the room the loveseat would be too close to the doorway because we would have to leave room for the recliners to open. Pinktoes, yep you're absolutely right it will be a hangout room for DH and I.

We just came back from Fortunoffs. We thought maybe a smaller sectional with a chais but they were still too big.

Gorgeous room! Our LR/TV Room is about 12x13 & we like it small & cozy. So much so that we painted it a darker shade of green to enhance the cozy factor. We have 1 sofa & 2 chairs. TV is on an old waterfall bureau & electronics housed in an old radio cabinet.

Our next house is more narrow & I've wrestled w/ what seating arrangement would be best. I wanted a sectional w/ a chaise & 2 chairs but ultimately we like to have the guys over to watch games so after a lot of opinion asking have opted against a sectional (lost seating in the corner part), opted against a loveseat (nobody wants to sit that close to someone for an extended period of time) & have opted for 2 sofa's to form an L & 2 chairs. Obviously we have more people over than yourself & your DH so I want to maximize seating space as much as possible.

Could you do w/o a loveseat & save on space?

Have you considered a chair & a half chaise should you care for something like that?

Side note: Fantastic green! May I ask what your trim color is?

We have a 11X12 room as our TV room and originally had a loveseat and sofa and replaced it with this sectional. It works much better. At one end of the sectional is a end table, we have a round coffee table, that has pull out ottomans under it for XTRA seating/put your feet up) and then the entertainment center in the corner across from the corner of the sectional( the TV has the windows adjacent to it on one side and the room opening on the other). Its actually a quite cozy room and love using it as a TV room. Its not adjacent to the kitchen, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

OK, let's think out of the box. If it's only the 2 of you watching TV, then you only need seating for the 2 of you. Right? As an example of matching the seating to your needs, I'll use us: Ma and Pa Kettle.

In the new house we're building we planned a family (the 2 of us plus cats) "den" off the kitchen. Seating only for two, with cats on top. We each get our favorite: DH only watches TV lying down; I prefer a chair with ottoman. But sometimes I want to lie down, so DH gets a double bed size futon, left folded open in the bed position. Then I have a place to lie down on occasion. Two pieces of furniture.

Each gets a small table to put stuff on. Mine is on casters to move around/out of the way. The TV. That's it. Blinds and curtains on all the windows to adjust the lighting conditions many different ways.

It's all, frankly, ugly. With new furniture it could look better. But the room closes off with doors and I plan to close them, and lock them if I have to, when anyone visits. It's our hangout. We're old and comfort comes first to us. We have our linaments and various medical assistive devices. LOL! Out in the open for our comfort and convenience.

Because of this stage of life--and delapidation, and perhaps surrender--I planned the house this way. There will be a separate Living Room that flows into the Dining and Kitchen for visiting with guests.

Your situation may be different. I just encourage you to tailor it to how you want to really live--at least in that room. And "Make yourselves at home"!

Do you have a Norwalk near you?

I have not used them but know they have "apartment sized" furniture. My sis got a sectional that is good looking just scaled down. It seems most furniture out today is so honkin' big.

Are those wires for the TV already in the drywall?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. pinktoes, I agree. I was thinking comfort and convenience when we went out to the furniture stores last night. After countless searching, we ruled out the sectional, they all were way too big. We also ruled out leather, most leather furniture I feel is too big for this size room. We did find a beautiful smaller sofa and loveseat and ottoman for a great, great price. It was the perfect color too so we ordered it. The good news is that it's in stock and we can have delivery whenever we want. I have to tell everyone, DH and I lounged on these pieces in the store for a good amount of time to make sure we liked them, I was waiting for the salesperson to bring over popcorn and soda :)

johnatemp, yep those wires are already run for our tv. We don't have a Norwalk by us. But as you can see from above we did find pieces we will be happy with.

I just now saw that you wanted to see my leather and fabric in the same room. We don't have that mix in the small garden room. The mix is in our large family room. It sounds like you've found your furniture. Congrats!
