A 5' wide island is going to be hard to clean... How wide is your kitchen? What is in front and back of the island? Clearances?

This is the floor plan, although we extended the pantry to continue the angle to the hutch.

I guess I would have to order new cabinets on 1 side to make it smaller - UGH. Do I have any other options?

You have a HUGE space! I don't think I'm reading this right... what is 12" to the right of the range? Frig? Do you have a prep sink planned since the space is large? Would help with multiple workers.

we took over the dining, laundry and old kitchen space to create this space. We created a new laundry, which is what was framed out today.

You are correct, from the corner is range, frig, desk (with lower counter) then a counter top cabinet before you go into the dining/living room.

no prep sink planned.

You can do it without ordering new cabinets. Take that 12" door in the upper right corner out of there. Slide the 36 inch cabinet down to meet that end. Then the 24" door cabinet under the seating area - you'll just have to cut the back 12" off of it. it will now only be 12" deep. This will make hte straight side of your seating longer, - while your diagonal will be in the same spot it will be shorter and maybe you just wouldnt put chair there... I'll fiddle with it and post a pic of what i mean.

Wait that doesnt work like i thought. you need to take some length off both sides to get it to work.... I'll be back...b

this one removes the 24" drawers, corner cabinet, and cuts the 18" cabinet so its only 12" deep

I think I would look for a way to make the island smaller too. You have such a large kitchen--but I do think that your aisles are tight. If you are an empty nester I think it would be fine...but if you have kids/ family I know I would want some more space.

Here are some guidelines I found....
the width of a walkway should be at least 36" and the width of a work aisle should be at least 42" for one cook and at least 48" for multiple cooks.

...about amount of clearance needed to allow someone to walk behind the stools (i.e., b/w counter edge & wall or other other obstruction behind the seating area)?
.....32" if no traffic passes behind a seated diner
.....36" to allow traffic to edge past seated diner
.....44" to allow traffic to walk past seated diner

and if you have something other than wall back there I think they recommend 55-60" but I couldn't find it.

Joy - this seems to indicate you think it is too long as well? What is involved in cutting down cabinets?

I am anxious to get home and put some boxes where the island would be.

In order to move that diagonal in, you have to shorten both the length and width. If you shorten on one side only, the diagonal will be in the same spot, just shorter.

and to cut it down - you just need someone with a saw to cut the back half off. If it can butt up to another cabinet to make the back wall, that would be simplest.. or if they are somewhat skilled they can put the original back on it again. You couldnt do this with the drawer cabinets very easily but the one with the simple shelving, wouldnt be too hard.

re cutting down a cabinet - our contractor did this with a drawer underneath our cooktop because the gas line stuck out a tiny bit too much. He didn't even blink - just sawed it off and installed it, and it works beautifully. It's definitely a possibility.
