How Can I attach this Curtain Rod?

I've been making some changes in my (small) living room/entry area, & the bulk of the work is finally done! The curtains used to be attached at the top of the window frame, and I raised the rods of the 2 smaller windows to match the height of the picture window (not shown). The overall effect raises the energy in the room & gives it a more expansive feel - all good!

The question is how to treat the drapery attachment - for now it's just screwed into the wall, but it seems that there should be something else there - some molding, or decorative blocks....something.

Any ideas, or pics you can show or direct me to?

By the way, the molding that you see all over the place is crown molding (we're putting it up today!), not a chair rail, just in case that colors any ideas - thanks!

I can't see the rod very well, but I think you need one with a larger diameter, and also one that is longer. You should extend it about a foot beyond the window side trim and hang the panel so that it's wider.

Nothing wrong with the brackets screwed into the wall. Once the drapes are up they should hide the brackets.

Wood closet dowling. I think it might come in a 2"diameter, and up to 10'-12' in length. It's sold by the foot at Home Depot or Lowe's. I've used it several times for heavier draperies which were lined ans quite wide, and it worked like a charm. It's much cheaper than an extra large store bought rod. You will also need to buy brackets for the ends as well as one in the middle. I use wood ones which are sold in the drapery hardware department. You can also paint or stain your rods/brackets, moreso the brackets since they will show.

Plaster walls- old house, how do I attach curtain rods?????

We lived in a 100+ yr old house with plaster walls. We always hung the rods from the wood trim on the Windows. We didn't have a problem hanging pictures or heavy mirrors. We usually just used large picture hangers, the kind with the nail already in them that go in at a slant. If you try to drill a screw straight into the wall I don't think you will get a good solid hold because the screw will go completely through the plaster and wood lath used to hold the plaster on it. You may be hitting a nail in the lath which is why the bit broke.. I would, go to the local hardware store and ask them what to use to hang curtain brackets on a plaster wall. They should be able to help, surely there is a fix for it.

Anybody know for how much length can a conduit curtain rod span?

Depending on the length and weight of the actual curtains/drapes and how they are managed for opening and closing, you may need support at the third points, rather than the mid-point. You will certainly need screws long enough to penetrate into wood studs and framing behind your gypsum board (or other material) walls. Have you done this sort of thing before?

The rods need to be wider and go wider than the windows. Maybe some thicker beefier ones would look better with these style curtains?

You can get rectangular shaped decorative molding pieces to go under the rods to sort of fill that wall space. But if you go with bigger diameter rods and nice decorative finials and rings, you may not need to use any deocrative molding pieces. I also would suggest using a wider rod and go out beyond the window frames a bit. You can get nice decorative wood brackets too which will take up a bit of the wall space beneath the rod.

ahaaaaa..... You know, my brain wasn't even going in the "new hardware" direction - partly because spending more $$ is in the "Avoid Doing That" file - but I think the suggestions to get bigger rods is the way to go.

I had already realized that extending the rods beyond the window frame was necessary, but maybe just getting another panel for each window (if they're still available) & larger rods will solve the problem.

Thanks so much everyone - having extra sets of discerning eyes helps SO much!
