Farmhouse kitchen progress - pics

We're coming along in our kitchen remodel - it was a total gut of kitchen/adjoining room in a 1911 home. We tried to get back to the original parts as much as possible (saved the floors, removed fake ceiling) and designed cabinets that looked similar to those that were built at the time of the house.

There are still several things on the to-do list (painting walls/backsplash, staining trim/stairs, installing hood, installing upper cabinet latches, getting TV/couch in adjacent room, getting stools) but thought I'd post some recent photos anyway. Once we're done, I'll post some nice photos (my dad's!). Thanks, Lisa 0527, for mentioning it!

There are a number of ways to approach your land planning. If I remember correctly, this is a second home. It sounds as though you want to develop a self sustaining property. Okay...let's tackle the two major problems first. Heavy winds that blow slate roof off. I can't promise you that any windbreak is going to solve this problem. Suggest that on the very wet, windward side of property you plant just one tree variety in three staggered rows; Bald cypress(Taxodium distichum). Toward the house side, about 40' from the trees install two rows of grapes spaced 20' apart (or so you can run a mower between comfortably). (Note: Always keep ease of mowing in mind when you add anything to a large property.) Think of the grapes as a windbreak, also. They would not have to be grown with the usual precision of pruning, etc. Just the foliage controlled as needed. Should you desire, plant in front of the grapes a mixed shrub border. Raise them up on a slight berm above water table. Viburnums, blueberries, even dwarf fruit trees could be grown on this berm. If wind is a summer problem then veggie garden would probably have to be enclosed with a solid board fence, dwarf fruit trees espaliered along the outside. Garden might be best situated in the square formed by barn and shed, as wide as you want to make it. If the deer find you it may be necessary to install an electric fence outside the garden area to prevent them from fence jumping. The 'V' between the sidewalks by the house looks like a spot for a parterre garden of kitchen herbs plus an ornamental, small tree, limbed up, planted at the sidwalk 'V'. Trees along curving drive...Donald Wymann flowering crab. Beautiful used in this manner. Bright red apples hang on all winter. A more upright growing ornamental tree than many of the other crab trees. Just a few quick thoughts for you. Your best advisors are neighboring farmers who know the territory. Let me be the first to burst the bubble. If you have open slat shelves up on legs, particularly in the way you show where the slat shelf is low -- how will you clean it? Got pets? Anything low in a hallway will be a dust magnet but it gets a lot worst with pet hair mixed in. What do you want to keep here? How much will be things you want to see and how much is possibly important, but not so wonderful to look at? If you keep things with a lot of use, will open cabinet doors tie up that hallway? If its as narrow as it looks, how comfortable will it be to pull out baskets? If you have something with a countertop or heavy moldings, you'll pretty much have just wall cabinets or wall cabinets plus about an inch of depth. I had clipped this as an inspiration pic two years ago. You want the space to be like the table on the left, but you actually have the depth of the construction on the right.

From your link describing using the tung oil, I'd go with that. I would stay away from polys at all cost as they are so difficult to repair without redoing the whole thing. I am hoping to do my kitchen floor--don't know what's under the vinyl tiles or the several layers underneath, but the rest of the downstairs is oak--white I presume? I think my trim is red oak--is that possible? My house was built in 1908. I would replace the registers also, but don't go to the expense of the linked site--they seem to only sell ones to fit modern ductwork; check out salvage shops/antique shops...there is one in my town where I've bought a couple registers from their large pile--all the good old cast iron black, some with louvers, some without, but all with varying designs of patterns for the grate. I put in an additional duct to my living room, and absolutely had to have the large register if I ever move furniture to match the one in the open near the dining room doors. Your idea of tung oil has given me another and easier option than sanding insanely and doing smelly chemicals. Thanks!

mtnrdredux, thank you sooo much for that link to the prior thread!!! We are in a similar situation in that there are reasons that we cannot have French doors because of light switches or cabinets/furniture on both sides of the doorway. We also considered the curtains pulled back solution but because we wanted to be able to control sound and preserve the view that didn't work out. The reason we are considering the piano hinged doors is that the wall between the 2 rooms is 12" thick so we have a wide cased opening that I think the door panels could fold flat against on each side. Since the opening is about 57" wide by 8' high, I guess this puts us into expensive custom territory. Sorry for going so off topic on you but your project is very inspirational. It's been a year since we mostly finished and I've been too burnt out to work on final details. Thanks again.

Absoloootly BEAUTIFUL! What a great job you did staying true to the old house.

I love the woodwork mixed in with the white cabinets and soapstone. I bet you are relieved to have it this close.

I would love to hear details, color of white you chose, etc.

Thanks everyone! We're happy with the way it is turning out.

Oldhousegal, the color of the cabinets is BM Aura "Paper Mache." It is just enough off-white that the cabinets aren't stark white; but it also doesn't have too much of any particular "color" to it. I didn't want something that would be a pastel yellow or peach, just a slightly off-white color. It has sort of a vintagey look to it in real life.

Sabjimata - I saw a few photos of wood lowers/white uppers amidst all the different photos I collected, and they kind of jumped out at me as being perfect for our small space. It seemed to be a little more open (as opposed to all wood uppers and lowers) but still traditional and interesting. I think wood (or white, for that matter) from top to bottom in my little space might have been too monolithic...

The soapstone is just a regular old Green Mountain soapstone with minimal veining. Sink is Shaw fireclay, faucet is Perrin & Rowe, range is Bertazzoni, DW is GE Cafe, lights are Old Schoolhouse (sconce) and Roost Berlin pendant (overhead pendants). The wood breakfast bar is curly cherry that we happened to find in a warehouse near us. We like it because it's similar enough to the cherry cabinets so it blends in - but the ribbony appearance and figures in the wood also give it a unique look. Pulls are Restoration (Gilmore knob and pull) and Rejuvenation (the glass pulls on the "buffet").

I remember this kitchen because of the corner stairway and the pop of red on the door! It's nice to see more progress pictures. The base stair curvature is beautiful, and so is the grain on the bar. I do have a question. The knobs on the base cabinet doors in the close-up picture that you posted do not look even. I wasn't sure if my eyes were deceiving me, but I asked my seven year old daughter and she thinks the left one is slightly higher than the right.

Beautiful! You did a wonderful job of keeping the kitchen to look age appropriate to the old house. I love the two toned cabinets and your light fixtures. Congrats on a job well done!

Adrienne, at first I thought the same thing then decided maybe the right door was ajar. Sure enough I just went back and scrolled down through the photos again and it's clear one door is slightly ajar.

Oh I love this! The great finishes, the blend of old and new, the great functionality, the details! This and Melissastar's kitchen are two that jumped out at me and made me wish I could live (and cook!) there! Congrats on the progress and look forward to seeing more. Thanks for sharing, Pauline!

Wow. Really beatiful. Cabinet choices and light fixtures look great. Beadboard backsplash is perfect too. Crafstmanship looks outstanding as well. It's kitchens like yours I'm drawing my own inspiration from.

This is gorgeous. It looks like your carpenter is doing a beautiful job........... I love the stained/white combo. The details all make the kitchen look like it could have been there a long time. Perfect.

What goes next to the fridge/under the cabinet? What will live in those skinny cabinets on the counter? :)

My kind of kitchen! Looks great! Gorgeous materials. I love the nooks and crannies --- the kind of character that makes it feel old. The stair is lovely, and the column supporting the bar is too.

What a gorgeous kitchen! Two elements that get my attention are 'farmhouse' and 'vintage,' and you've done a wonderful job on both. I'm planning on using similar corbels in my kitchen, so I'm pleased to see those. Love the landing and the beadboard--in fact, can't find anything I don't love!
