We are coming along. Months and months late, but I will try not to think about that!

My floors are on the final coat! Carlisle random width wide plank in Bradford Umber. Went medium rather than dark to avoid it looking trendy, and hopefully it'll feel original. The old floors were pickled! Hello 80s!

Next week, my range and my counters should be in! (should be).

I have two work tables, one near the hutches and one very narrow one between the range and stove.

Meant to say arrow forward to see the kitchen from the other end, looking from the breakfast room in to the kitchen. Across the hall is the pantry (door propped open in this photo)

oh and meant to say one of the work tables is between the range and sink! Range will be against the stone wall

Thank you all for the feedback! I really appreciate it! Holly321: the space is 15' long (+ WC which is 5x3.5')and 6.25' wide. We had that icky plastic shower as well and were so glad to get rid of it. I think you could easily trade your shower for a washer+dryer - either stacked with a sink and cupboard to one side or side by side w/counter above for folding/storage. I find a lot of newer W/D are too high for me to have a counter above be useful (and I'm tallish). My in laws have that set up and it doesn't really function well for intended purpose. Our W/D are actually the same brand from different years so, while they are meant to stack they are not meant to stack on one another. We had our counter fabricator extend the Ecotop over the washer and set the dryer above, with a bracket on the wall behind to support it at the back. It works great! I don't have much counter space for folding, which was intentional as we have never done that in the laundry room, mostly b/c we couldn't before, but we'll fold while watching TV at night instead (then DH helps when he might not otherwise!). ;) colorcrazy: Thank you for the compliment! I do not yet know what I am doing for the cushion. I have three seat cushions I need to have made and haven't even begun yet. I am considering a dark brown as I think the chocolate is a nice contrast with the white and blue, and would be practical in a potentially messy space. Or a fun pattern! As you can tell, I love color. Piping sounds like a nice, finished touch. Ideaas welcome! Thanks again.

Marti- I know you've been through this whole 'dining table/seating area' debate, when you were designing your kitchen remodel and addition. So...when you asked me about moving the table, it gave me an idea! What if we put the table on the porch in the summer (with little seating area by the fireplace) and then swap them, in the winter? The table by the BBQ and with views out the back, makes sense when it's light until 9 pm. But, when it's dark at 4:30 pm, I'd rather have dinner by the warm fireplace. I'd still have the chair in the corner (by the fire) and a bench in front of the window...but the loveseat, table and chair could go out on the porch. It would be great to sit out on the porch (with a throw) and watch the snow fall :) What do you think? If we did that...I might put the island back in the kitchen. While I love the picture, I just went to a friend's house (with a table in the middle of the kitchen) and it was so short...it was driving me crazy! I was in another kitchen with table some time ago...and it was fine. Maybe because they had more prep space and we were sitting at the table, not standing. Sheesh! I feel a little foolish...since the kitchen forum warned me this might happen! LOL

I played with your plan a wee bit, turning the laundry room and baking pantry on their sides and moving your kitchen appliances around quite a bit. =) Both laundry room and baking pantry are wider in this plan, which means that you have better aisles in both spaces. I didn't realize until I working on your plan how narrow your baking pantry was. If you were spec'ing standard depth counters & cabs along one wall and 12" cabs on the other, you're left with less than 29" for the aisle. That's fine if you don't intend to work in their but since it sounds like you want to do baking prep in here, that's not going to work well at all, especially if you want your kids to help you. My plan does mean no window in your laundry room but you could always add clerestory windows between baking pantry and laundry room to let light flow from one to the other, like they did between spaces in this home. Okay, into the kitchen. I removed the wing walls on each side of the dining area so that you're not pinched for space around the table. However, as I wrote above, if you want to keep the walls, you can bump the space out instead. I moved the fridge out of the corner and against the pantry wall. That puts it close to your baking center; shorter walks to get eggs, butter, etc. I moved your clean up sink and 2 DWs to the wall next to the fridge. Here are inspiration pics for sinks against walls, not under windows. Moving the clean-up zone, opened up space to move the range top and hood to an exterior wall. Since you're concerned about noise, you should definitely look into adding an remote blower to your hood. This runs ducting up the exterior wall to your roof where your blower will sit. You'll cut noise quite a bit. I moved the ovens to right next to the baking pantry door so it's an shorter walk with pans of batter. I added a prep sink to your island to give you a good work zone between pantry, fridge and range top. The downside of this plan is that it puts the clean-up sink and dish storage the farthest from the dining area. It also means that anyone wanting to grab last minute items from the fridge to bring to the table will walk through the cook zone. Not ideal but I can't think of another way to address that at the moment. Oh, the other thing I did was recess the full depth fridge into the pantry wall so that it appears to be counter depth. I've no idea what your aisle widths were because you hadn't marked them but you have a large enough space to go for generous 48" aisles.

You can repair it-just search on fiberglass repair and you'll find a ton of recommendations, but some other scratches will be coming. Most people avoid fiberglass sinks, because they look pretty for only a very short period of time. You may be better off "making do" and saving your money to purchase a replacement sink out of a more durable material.

Gorgeous..I've been looking forward to seeing your kitchen. I knew it was going to be beautiful. Your floors and brick wall add so much in creating the beautiful character in the space. Your choice of cabinetry is perfect. It certainly is befitting of your beautiful home and surroundings. Can't wait to see it finished.

Amazing floors! I can't wait to see it finished.

Not loving the rock wall though. Just a personal opinion, Don't flay me! I grew up in a 1979 ranch that had that kind of rock. I lived in that house for 18 years, maybe that's why. Rock overload.

No, I know what you mean about the stone --- definitely kind of a Rocky Mountain feel to it. But we used it because it is original to the house (this is the back side of the family room fireplace). Plus, it will have a 5 foot wide range in front of it so I think will feel less prominent when we are done.

I like stacked stone, but decided it was too trendy and we should keep what's there, and what matched the DR fireplace (the kitchen adjoins the family rm on one side and the dr on the other.

Farmhouse? I swooned so completely at the first pic that it took me a few minutes notice an arrow to click. From either end, the vista, colors, textures are amazing and defy stylistic categorization.

I had seen your elevations before, and assumed that the "brick" was brick. The stone is just impossibly beyond wonderful.

OOh, thanks everybody. I'm so excited. We went under contract on this house Aug 2009 and the renovation and expansion have taken forever. I am so dying to move in in March 11!

Cat - thank you! I think its partly an illusion, we still have two work tables and a range to go in!

Honor - I love "defy stylistic catgorization". I am really hoping to do that, but whenever I do a project i realize later that I was actually just channelling things id already seen, consciously or not.

Martha - thanks but in a next life I will get my Aga! If only I werent so intimidated to cook on it.

Oldhouse - Im so glad you think it fits. That is my number one task. To make it feel like a part of the house and land, and yet not have it be DIsneyfied country.

It is lovely Mtnrd, your homes are beautiful. Looking at your pictures reminds me of looking at Bunny Williams book, yours is not as clutterry (new word). I like your style, very comfortable and refined. I am looking forward to seeing the finished kitchen, should be great. Carlisle floors are gorgeous, I think you chose a perfect color. You have such pretty windows and views. I'm waiting to see the pewter counters or zinc? Thank you for posting. It is interesting to see how someone else decorates a home. And outside as well, the gardens are amazing.

Seriously. That is the most gorgeous floor I have ever seen.

I'm having serious heart palpitations when I go back and look at them.

I am so salivating.... that floor is beautiful, and the cabinets are amazing! I have to say, I like the stone, but then again, I just put in a stone wall this week into my new build. I think your finished kitchen will have so much character (it already does) and I cannot wait to see more!

Thrilled: I've posted a link to the floor. I fell in love with that photo, but when the color was tested in my house, Plymouth Pumpkin was too orange. So i used Bradford Umber instead. Note that this is Eastern White Pine, so it is soft and will distress easily, We wanted that --- we hope it looks old soon!

Maggie - thank you! I have no hand in the gardens. We used a wonderful landscape architect in our old house, the brick one you see. In this new house, well the whole reason we bought it was the setting --- stone terraces, pond, gardens, etc. We weren't even planning to move but we came across it and it seemed once-in-a-life time to us. Luckily, we do love our new community.

lol, well my DH seems to want that with every new step that gets started and gets finished. I'm pretty sure I'd give in with floors like those :)

I just showed them to my boss who is also redoing his kitchen and has just installed all hardwood floors in his house. He appreciates a nice hardwood floor and he was blown away by their beauty too.

Was the price reasonable? Did you get these floors installed elsewhere in the house, or just the kitchen?

For some reason, I didn't think you were as far along as this so I'm surprised to see pics. But what a great surprise! It's going to be a gorgeous space. Love the views too. Hurry and finish up so I can see the whole thing! ;)

Your amazing floor: how is it that you don't have huge gaps between the planks?
I have wide pine floors (house built in 1976) and my gaps between the planks are huge! I can fill them in w/ Cheerios!

Beautiful! Are the doors between the kitchen and breakfast/dining area on a track or just piano hinged? They are just wonderful looking and seem so very functional. We have been dithering on what to do to have doors between our eating area and a small sitting room. Your doors look like they would be perfect for us. Are they custom or a particular brand? I wish I could remember the brand door we used in our house. Doors were DH's part of the project and I can't find the paperwork now. Anyway, your whole kitchen is marvelous and I hope you enjoy it for many, many years!

FLseadog, the doors between our kitchen and dining room were there, we did not put them in. They are not on a track. They open and fold back. We are painting them and replacing the glass (silly frosted with a design) with restoration glass. I will try to remember to take a photo if that helps?

Torino , we are putting hand hewn cherry on the counters where there are no uppers, underneath the windows. In the L shaped area where there are uppers (tho they sit on the counter), the counters will be pewter. We
also have a zinc topped work table and an island with dolomya marble.

Craftlady, we really felt that these floors were very important to the look of the house. We put them in the entry hall, kitchen, breakfast room, mudroom and mudroom hallway, hallway to the master wing, hallways and steps to kids bedrooms, and .... My favorite... In my bathroom under my slipper tub. We did not put them in bedrooms. Elsewhere in the house is cork, or existing slate or existing marble. It's hard to search my old emails on my iPad but when I have a chance I will on my laptop. The floor is pine, and pine is relatively cheap. But then the old wide plank features ups the price.

Craftlady,We also put the same wood floors in the family room, too. I think it was like 3000 sq ft.In total for the various rooms and hallways

We are painting the dr trim BM Hampshire grey. We actually did track down the designer whose photos of a solarium that reminded me of my dining room inspired the idea of painted trim. The designer's assistant rather sheepishly told me the color was FnB Lime White, tho it didn't look like that color in the photo. My entire lr and the trim in some of my br are Lime White, and I can tell you I think she was wrong. So we just went with our gut.

So that is like $14/sq foot or so? Of course that includes an egregious markup by my GC, I am sure. (don't get me started).

mtnrdredux, thank you sooo much for that link to the prior thread!!! We are in a similar situation in that there are reasons that we cannot have French doors because of light switches or cabinets/furniture on both sides of the doorway. We also considered the curtains pulled back solution but because we wanted to be able to control sound and preserve the view that didn't work out. The reason we are considering the piano hinged doors is that the wall between the 2 rooms is 12" thick so we have a wide cased opening that I think the door panels could fold flat against on each side. Since the opening is about 57" wide by 8' high, I guess this puts us into expensive custom territory. Sorry for going so off topic on you but your project is very inspirational. It's been a year since we mostly finished and I've been too burnt out to work on final details. Thanks again.

Craftlady, I contacted the floor company. Their min order is 350 sq ft... Way too much for me. I would love it for my kitchen, but don't need anywhere near that much - more like 150 sq ft. So sad.

Mtnrd - OMG I LOVE those floors. And am a huge fan of that beautiful hunk 'o rock. I hear ya about the stacked stonework. As you know I have WZ stacked stone as my backsplash and was really bummed to see a knockoff at Costco recently :-(.

It is all uber fabulous - can't wait to see it finished.
