Pics of new mudroom/laundry in old farmhouse, before&after!

We just completed a remodel (tear down, rebuild part of a 100 year old farmhouse) including kitchen, laundry, FR as well as a master bedroom/bath addition. My old laundry was 5' wide so I could not even stand in front of washer with a basket. The new space is narrow but the foot and a half added makes a huge difference! I love the new space. Still looking for the right light and wall hangings for WC, in time.

Before (The space had a shower, washer, dryer, sink. The fabric to the right of the sink covered the old service panel! And sorry, pics seem to have been taken when we were moving out/cleaning up or fixing busted washer!):

What a HUGE difference! It looks GREAT. Bet it makes doing laundry so much "easier! " :-) We are in the process of redoing our laundry room. I'm so excited. Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us.

Who are you calling a lady? LOL, my wife (who is indeed a shorter person) will get a kick out of that one. We inherited the space when we purchased the house and are fortunate that it's so large. Of course we could use some additional room, but isn't that just about always the case? Please note that I, a taller person, need a stepladder to reach the upper shelves of the cabinets. Putting the machines on pedestals would have made the countertop too high for me to fold comfortably, and I'm OK with the height of their doors as-is. The pattern on the floor is similar to the wall tiles, and I believe the material is a simple stone tile purchased from Virginia Tile. It extends all the way to the kitchen, encompassing the back hall, closet, and half-bath. Apologies for my sideways photos. They weren't that way at the hosting site the last time I checked.

Thanks all! weedpuller: the compost bucket is huge - 15L or about 3 gallons. I don't let it get too full though because it gets heavy (not to mention smelly, though only noticeable when the door is open) and I worry about the weight. It is from Rev A Shelf, see link localeater: I love the compost bucket. We compost everything, no garbage disposal in our house. It is under the prep sink on the island and I scrap into the sink then gather it up to throw in the bucket. Easy. The bucket pulls out to be carried out to our bin. Also, the broom closet is 2' wide, 3' deep and 6' tall and functions beautifully (especially after not having one for so long!). The chair is from PB Teen, Vintage Wood Swivel. Well constructed and comfy, as well as (I agree, if I do say so myself) a perfect fit for the space! Beth: Thanks!! It's Baker and we're not going anywhere anytime soon ;) We did all this work on an old house we love because we hope to be here forever! :) And yes, our pup loves it too! kelhuck: That is just what I love to do in the space, time and kids allowing! Book storage was actually a big part of the planning for our book-loving family. And yes, mamadadapaige - life altering is right! Sometimes I still can't quite believe it. Thanks again! Reader, the prints in the bathroom are called Serengeti I and II by Tandi Venter. The artist is from South Africa I believe. DH and I had the opportunity to go on a safari in SA with our church group a few years ago, and although these are just common art posters, they make me think of our personal trip. I bought the prints on eBay and made the frames out of door casing trim. They are fantastic posters, but the odd size made buying stock frames impossible (and custom was more than I wanted to spend ;-) Lynn, thanks so much for the kind words. I'm glad you commented on the cabinet color; I haven't seen many painted to blend with the walls, so I wasn't sure of the reception it would get. Those original cabinets are extremely sturdy and well built but didn't have anything going for them in the looks department. I wanted to downplay their appearance and size but maximize their function. It didn't hurt that using all one color allowed me to just spray on the paint willy-nilly, either!

Heather.....I really don’t see a problem with your kids putting things away the way you have it arranged. As soon as they walk in the door they will immediately see the storage area. On paper, it looks like a separate room, but in reality, it will feel different. The hallway is fairly narrow, and the opening into your laundry/mud room is quite large... so going into that space is not the same as walking through the typical 2’8” or 3’ doorway. If it were my home, I would prefer a counter with a sink (looks like you have a free standing laundry tub there...maybe I am reading the plan incorrectly) I would also make sure you have room for your ironing board. I like to keep mine open and accessible at all times. If it’s not, the ironing falls by the wayside and the task of ironing just becomes more of a nuisance because I have to set up the board every time I need to iron something. Personally, I do not like to combine a laundry room and a mud room/drop zone area. I like my laundry room to be completely separate and on its own. I think a mud room can generate a lot of dirt, grit etc. Everyone will be traipsing through that area just coming in from the outside (with their shoes on I assume). That floor will get dirty and gritty....so not a place where I would want my clean laundry dropping on the floor (think large sheets touching a dirty floor as well as ironing large items that also drag on the floor). Also, when there’s a lot of laundry to do, there can be piles all over the place (not sure about your laundry habits, but this happens in my home all the time). That being said though, I would NOT divide that space into two rooms because in my view, each would be too cramped...so maybe you can add a little more square footage which will give you more room to divide that area into two rooms?

I think it looks GREAT! Good job! And to think that ugly brown linoleum floor was ONCE thought to be attractive! I've always hated that 70s looking linoleum.

Lovely. I love the new back door, the tile, the wainscoting, and the color. I have a new bench like that and still need to cover a cushion. DH cut the foam to fit and I haven't decided whether to use piping or not. Have you decided what to use as a cushion for yours?

Beautiful home you have!

Except that I have the icky plasticy shower instead of tub. The shower itself hasn't been used in probly 10 years and is a total waste of space. What you have looks wonderful and is very inspiring. What are your finished dimensions?

Holly321: the space is 15' long (+ WC which is 5x3.5')and 6.25' wide. We had that icky plastic shower as well and were so glad to get rid of it. I think you could easily trade your shower for a washer+dryer - either stacked with a sink and cupboard to one side or side by side w/counter above for folding/storage. I find a lot of newer W/D are too high for me to have a counter above be useful (and I'm tallish). My in laws have that set up and it doesn't really function well for intended purpose. Our W/D are actually the same brand from different years so, while they are meant to stack they are not meant to stack on one another. We had our counter fabricator extend the Ecotop over the washer and set the dryer above, with a bracket on the wall behind to support it at the back. It works great! I don't have much counter space for folding, which was intentional as we have never done that in the laundry room, mostly b/c we couldn't before, but we'll fold while watching TV at night instead (then DH helps when he might not otherwise!). ;)

colorcrazy: Thank you for the compliment! I do not yet know what I am doing for the cushion. I have three seat cushions I need to have made and haven't even begun yet. I am considering a dark brown as I think the chocolate is a nice contrast with the white and blue, and would be practical in a potentially messy space. Or a fun pattern! As you can tell, I love color. Piping sounds like a nice, finished touch. Ideaas welcome!

So pretty and the wall color is invigorating!

I normally favor toned-down or softer colors, but would love doing laundry in that room! Love the white woodwork, bead board and finishing touches. What a fabulous change you made!
