Need Ideas/Help/Suggestions on Kitchen Backsplash & .......

Hello all helpful ladies and gentlemen of this forum:

I originally posted this in the Kitchen forum without much response. I need some ideas and hope you can help me. We purchased a home with a small 1970s style galley kitchen and had to redo it from scratch on a limited budget, which meant no knocking down walls. We changed the floors from linoleum to eliane ceramic tile in caramel, installed new ginger maple 42" cabinets, dakota mahogany countertops, recess lighting and SS appliances. Now to my problem, looking at the pictures:

I need suggestions on a backsplash? (pictures/links will be appreciated as I'm not good at colors. I have to see it to know it and visualize it.)

2. I'm tired of tiers/valance for window covering and would like other suggestions?

3. Do you think I need undercabinet lighting?

I've also attached a backsplash I'm considering. what do you think?

Folded roman shades on the windows, hung from higher up to give the windows height, would look very nice. Does your floor have a salmon/pink cast to it? Some of the bs tiles also appeared to have the same salmony cast-that could work.It was hard to visualize them together because I had to go back and forth. Colorwise I like the tiles, I'm not sure about the scale of the patterns together(tile vs granite).Sorry I'm not more helpful!

Here are 5 Fireclay color samples: The 1st three: Taken further away: (same exact order) 2 other colors: Further away (same order) From the top picture with the 3 samples, I feel blue spruce is too dark. Foggy morning seems like a good match - perfect shade of gray - not too light or too dark and it's a V3. Not sure what to make of French Linen (V2) - seems like it could work, shade seems not too dark and not too light. Weird thing is when there are no kitchen lights on, it seems gray, but when I turn my under cabinet lights on, it turns white. Out of the picture with the 2 samples, the frost seems to have a little yellow/cream in it which I don't like. White wash could work, but it's very plain, not crackled and is a V1. Just out of curiosity, since I am also considering the sonoma stellar line and if I went with a gray tile, it'd probably be penthouse (I still have to go back to the tile store and look some more), Here's a photo with 2 fireclay colors and 1 sonoma (penthouse) If I did fireclay tiles, should I go gray or white and which specific color? and should I do 2x6 or wave? I still have the hexy in the running; and the sonoma stellar line (which has all kinds of shapes I'm waiting to look at vs 2x6 with mix of gloss/matte)..... Too many choices! Would love other's opinions :) Thanks!

That is some really nice granite! I decided to take a look at some pendant lights (I assume they'll go over an island, but if you need something else, like a ceiling semi-flush mount, please let me know) and chose to look at pendants with nickel finish to go with the cabinet handles. I can expand the search to include bronze or other finish families too, though! The woodgrain, although subtle, is a strong pattern because it's horizontal. The countertop is also subtle in some sense but active with the movement and contrast of the veins. Honestly I don't think anything so far is quite right. They all introduce more pattern and its too much. A lot of people probably dislike this kitchen, (it's George and Laura Bush's), but I picture it here because it kind of has a universal modern appearance (is it 2010, is it from 1990 but forward thinking?), like your kitchen--and it has an architectural glass or backpainted starphire glass backsplash, which is the direction I would be thinking of for your kitchen. I don't think you want to muddy it up with lots of groutlines and shapes.

I like your idea about the tiles that match your granite, I actually have that tile but a differnet color on my entrance floor. Matching the granite would make that area under your cabinets seem more spacious. If not that then I would pick the lightest color out of your granite and do a backsplash in a simple pattern.
IMO, I think you do need undercabinet lighting since your granite is dark, it makes the counter dark.

Furletcity, you have actually been very helpful. I hadn't thought about raisig the height of the window covering go give more height. I guess I've been thinking inside the box. Do you have a particular color of roman shade in mind? I'm not sure what salmon/pink cast looks like but the tile color is called illusione caramel. Sorry you had to go back and forth. I don't know how to post the pictures inside the messages without using links. I'm not sure about the scale either. Other suggestions for a backsplash? TIA.

Roseabbey. Thanks for your suggestions. I wasn't thinking of using matching granite tiles for the backsplash but rather using one of the canaletto tiles with 3X3 granite inserts. You are right that the counter is dark. Do you have any thoughts as to what kind of cabinet lighting? Thanks again.

Sorry, I didnt word my answer correctly, I think your idea backsplash if you use the rosso tile with the dakota mahongany inserts would look smashing....

We bought our undercabinet lighting from Home Depot. They are several kinds you can choose from.

Not sure what you mean by matchy matchy...do you mean they are both same size tile....the color is not the same. Sometimes I like matchy matchy, it creates balance in a room.
