Put my Verde Butterfly sample to the test

and so far it has passed! I used tomato sauce, wine, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and lemon juice. Let each set there for hours (almost all day) and no etching/staining etc. Don't know if the sample has been sealed or not tho. I think I'm going to go with it!

so.... can anyone share pics of their verde butterfly? esp. with white cabinets? (but any will do)

I really liked the Verde peacock I saw because it had flecks of gold in it, but the butterfly has some white/cream spots in it that might go with my white cabs better. any thoughts/suggestions?

Good for you! I really liked the Verde Butterfly too but it looked too black in my kitchen. Good luck with it. It is a really pretty stone. I had no problems with the sample test either on my piece either. It should look stunning with white cabinets.

I love our Verde Butterfly counters. They are virtually indestructible! I had the coffee maker leak coffee all over the counter and it was there all day before I saw it when I got home. No stains. Husband has left tomato sauce and lemon juice on it for hours and again the counters were fine, no etching, staining, etc. Another great thing about VB is that it's one of the granites that doesn't ever need to be sealed. It was sealed when it was installed but I've since learned from this forum that it wasn't neccessary and I won't need to reseal. (BTW, our cabinets will be refaced/painted white soon so no pics right now).

Welcome to the real world Sandy. For starters, wanting all of your livestock is a BIG red flag that tells you this is not just a hobbyist wanting to do some butterfly gardening. Asking for all is just plain rude and selfish, especially when from a stranger. Offering to pay shipping is just being courteous, especially if only a one-way "trade". But the "boot" for your trouble is also a red flag. Folks who trade bugs back and forth for fun or even serious rearing studies do not normally charge for or offer to pay for them. It is usually a trade of livestock or specimens, now or promised later. Dealer's on the other hand do buy, and try to so for pennies on the dollar to increase thier profit margins. BTW, the extra plant was to assure the larvae made the trip alive and to give the dealer time to switch them over to their available plant once the package is recieved. Common practice when shipping livestock... the plant material (and oxygen) available to them has to exceed the travel time. I often sent huge boxes full of longividy prepared plant containing only a few larva when it was sent to countries where the package could take up to weeks to get there. The stories I could tell about the years of very extensive rearing I did of so many worldwide species and for profit dealers, especially once the word got around the Lepidopteran community of my work. I was contacted constantly by dealers wanting to buy livestock and/or specimens, and by egotists wanting the livestock to establish new colonies in ranges they did not occur in naturally so they could "find" new state/county, etc records. Pricing... did you know there are many "legal" to collect species in just this country alone that bring up to several hundred dollars each on the world black market? Or foreign species that bring up to 10's of thousands of dollars each. And with illegal species the price goes up, drastically. I remember one jerk from Japan who actually sent me a purchase order for 200 pairs each of 5 subspecies from one species complex I was rearing in large numbers over several years for an in depth study project, and he offered to pay $300 per pair. Yep, $60K worth. And when I traveled to the South Pacfic one time I got an offer for all the Trogonoptera/Troides I could collect and I could set my own price for them. There is big money in Lepidoptera if your ethics reside down there with the bottom feeders. That greed changes otherwise good people too. I could also tell some BIG stories about that pertaining to Lepidoptera, some that were and still are far reaching worldwide. Maybe another day. I am proud of you for not falling for this Sandy. Believe it or not the aqua would look amazing too. If you like the green idea though, you may want to consider SW Celery. We put SW #6421 Celery in our downstairs .5 bath and it's my favorite color in the whole house. It's sort of in the same family as Honeydew Melon, it's cheerful but not too bright and very up beat. I think it would look amazing with what you've discribed. If you'd like to see an example of what it looks like you can try it on the Sherwin Williams website, there is actually a bathroom picture with a half wall of white tile. Just for fun if you want to see the aqua in action too, try #6750 Waterfall. The monitor may change the color a bit, but it will at least give you an idea. Here's a pic of it in our bathroom right after we painted it. It's such a small room it's hard to see, sorry.

I have just installed verde butterfly in my major kitchen remodel and everyone including all my subs has commented on how beautiful my kitchen turned out. I have KraftMaid cabinets in autumn blush which are in between a light and dark finish and this was the only granite that I fell in love with the moment I saw it. It just tied the whole room together while giving it some contrast. As far as keeping it clean, I have not noticed any finger prints whatsoever, but I do see water standing where I have splashed which is no different than any other counter material I have had in the past. The fabricator is giving you a snow job, get another one. There are alot of so called fabricators out there that do not know what they are doing. I suspect he wants you to buy a more costly piece of granite, as times are getting tougher for people. I love love love mine. I say go for it!

Verde Butterfly versus Uba Tuba

Thanks everyone. I spent some time last night looking at the finished kitchens blog. In the pictures, I liked both the Uba Tuba and Verde Butterfly. We got the "firm" numbers for our kitchen yesterday, so we're now looking to cut costs. I need to call floor dude. He's the one who has the supply of Uba Tuba. He privately imported a rather signficant amount of it last year. So, I need to get numbers from him, and then see when we can look at it. I'm pretty willing to do whatever DH wants here. My preference ran more to the brown granites, but DH seems to love the darker granites. Since he's letting me make the call in most other areas (with the exception of the layout!!), I'll defer to him on this. Compromise. Our GC is also going to take the floors out of the bid and let us purchase them and install them on our own. That will save a significant amount as well. We'll also paint. We had chosen a backsplash, but now I'm questioning it. I'm going to really try to hold off as long as I can. I'd really like to see what the kitchen looks like with the cabs in first. Thanks for your opinions!

wow that's good to know - didn't think about testing with coffee. I've been so pumped about finally deciding on a particular granite, then my DH comes home and says to hold off. There is a possibility that all salaried workers where he works may have to take a 20% pay cut :( he won't know until next month. Boy am I bummed, but there are so many out of work in our area that feel fortunate we are both working.

Slightly OT - A close friend of ours lost his job. Too young to retire really, but he will have to in order to keep medical insurance. Anyhow we just did a laundry room remodel and we paid him to replace flooring, install cabinets etc and I was feeling guilty about spending $5-6K on countertops when he doesn't even have a job. So anyway, the project is on hold for now.

I did not choose Verde Butterfly or Peacock. They are
lovely. It was close for me because the price was
perfect and this stone stands up to anything.

I do have some pics for you to see of other counters.

wow boxerpups you are just wonderful! How do you do it?? Thanks for all those pics, but now you've got me wondering about the peacock again! They are both really beautiful. I also like one that is called either green pearl, verde pearl or pearl green. Can't remember exactly, but its beautiful also. But my KD said all the pearls are in a more expensive price bracket. I'm trying to stay in the peacock/butterfly/ubatuba range.

BTW my DH said its probably just a rumor about his salary getting slashed, but I'm still too afraid to go ahead with plans just yet. Every time I wipe off my counters I dream of my new granite counters I will have SOMEDAY lol!

You are not alone in worries of money. My rule and maybe
this can help you is...
If you have the cash go for it, because I have found
granite prices to be at the lowest. But if you need the
cash were your DH to lose his job I recommend keeping the
counters you have. You can always visualize and perhaps
in a year ot two when things are better financially
you can go for the pearl or whatever you fancy.
There is nothing wrong with being practical.

Keep dreaming that is the best part of kitchen planning.

We have Verde Peacock and I have to agree that it is pretty much bullet-proof (and I'm not the world's best housekeeper either). I think Peacock and Butterfly vary by batch so you have to go with what is available where you are - it may not match what the rest of us have.

Is the pearl you like Emerald Pearl? That is one that we also loved but went with the Peacock for the lower price since it wasn't all that different looking. It was lovely though!

I have off white cabinets with a cocoa glaze in the crevices. I want to use verde butterfly granite on countertops. I love stone or slate 6 x 6 tiles for backsplash. I have been looking at some earthtone multicolored slate. but they are being discontinued and I am not ready. Can you suggest?
