February 2014 what looks good/bad in your garden?
Comments (22)Awesome updates everyone. So fun to see. Like several posters mentioned, my tomato plants (and basil!) survived this winter just fine and are producing quite nicely again. Leaf lettuce is just making an amazing crop so I can have several salads a week (the earliest sowings from October have started bolting/flowering so I'm ripping those out and replacing with new youngsters). What a mild winter this has been! Jon, does your Senecio usually survive the winter or do you re-start it from cuttings? I grew it at my last Scottsdale garden and always took cuttings as insurance, but after selling that place I have no idea if it got torched in a freeze or what. I love your beds, Mary, especially the neat trellis on the last pic--so neat! I've got aloe blooms, and lemon fruit coming out my eyeballs, lol. Here's a quick pic of my covered patio yesterday, just for fun (Wilson the tennis ball discreetly placed to show relative size, hah). Agave parryi and Euphorbia rigida in the front garden this morning: A fun "mutt" "mongrel" or "hybrid" (depending on who you ask and what their mood is, LOL) aloe, which clearly has mostly Aloe striata in its ancestry, blooming away (tennis ball to show size). Happy gardening everyone, enjoy this fabulous weather! Grant Here is a link that might be useful: Pics from my garden, Feb 2014...See Moremarmoleum - good or bad
Comments (12)BAD I've had a marmoleum click floor for about 2 years now and while I love the look, it just doesn't stand up to the wear of even a moderately used kitchen. First off, on install it got a big scratch while moving in the stove. Ouch. The nice thing about this stuff is that flaws like that tend to get lost over time. They sort of "wear in" and disappear. Secondly some hot bacon grease seems to have melted a splash pattern into several of the planks. I'm not sure how or when that happened, and word is this stuff is not supposed to melt but it does. I managed to pick out the burned marks and re-coat the finish so once again, the're not that visible (matte clear waterborne polyurethane at the hardware store matches the stock finish pretty well), but you can still see it in the right light. Finally, a leaking freezer caused the seam between two planks to bubble up about 2-3" in each direction. Again, not horribly visible except in the right light, but still damaged. I spent about $600 on the material for this floor plus the cost of having a friend install it. Given the rate of damage to it I don't expect it to last more than another few years. I want to like it but I just can't say that it wears well enough to recommend it to anyone else....See MoreNews...some good (bought fridge) and some bad
Comments (9)Kaismom--I've had plenty of meltdowns in the past 18 months of this, but I've been fine lately. We almost did this when I was pregnant with our second, but I convinced DH to wait until after she was born to start. Briana--I feel for you living with someone else. We've been so fortunate enough to have a decently sized house to live in for the past 8 months so we didn't have to squeeze down too much. Yes, I think we're realistically about a month behind. I'd like to say less, but I'm tired of under estimating! I would have said 3 weeks until today when I found out that drywall would take about 8-10 working days. For some reason I thought it would only take a week. Beagles--I hadn't thought about the stress of living with the kids in a kitchenless house with construction still ongoing. Maybe we'd better plan for a 3-month apartment lease and stay there until the house is further along. Celine--Yeah, some stuff is a bummer. The progress feels good though. I can't wait to see your kitchen done! Hurry! Patriot--I'm sure I'll be happy with it too. I appreciate your help in my path to buying it....See MoreSept. OBF: Bugs - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
