kitchen knob help for ugly cabinets!

Hi, I have decided it is time to add some pulls to my builder's grade, oak finished, knobless/pull-less cabinets in my kitchen. I have broken several nails trying to quickly open cabinets when they don't open as easily as I think they should, and the finish is wearing off on the most often used doors.

My floor is ugly vinyl with gold and greenish floral designs, and the counters are green laminate.

To be honest, there are many things we would love to change about the kitchen, and it is possible that we may update some of it soon. However, the cabinets will remain, at least for the foreseeable future.

From reading here, I think I'd like to go with pulls. But I don't know what kind of finish is best for the type of plain, golden oak, mid-1980's kitchen cabinets we have.

Any general rules to go by?

Thanks!
