Am I obsessing too much over smooth walls?

The idea was to make my lower dining room walls resemble painted wood paneling. I think it was Laurie's entryway that inspired me. So I went to work and troweled on joint compound and sanded, and sanded and sanded below the chair rail for a smooth look. I left the upper wall the original texture. I've primed and I thought I was ready to top coat, but I can still see imperfections and ever-so-slight bumpiness on the lower walls. Should I keep working to get them perfect? Or whould I just go ahead and paint.

The chair rail is about 3ft from the floor, so when I'm painting, admittedly it's right at eye level. Unless someone loses a contact, they won't be eye to eye with my wall. Although if they've lost a contact, they probably can't see it anyway.

Help!?! I've been at this wall smoothing thing for over a week.

Thanks.
