Am I expecting too much? Steel beam in ceiling

We have several long steel beams in the ceilings of our current build. After the sheetrock is up, taped, the knockdown is done and the entire ceiling is painted, should you still be able to tell where the beam runs? If I look at the ceiling from across the room, I can clearly see exactly where the beam runs. I asked my builder about it and he has said that he had a difficult time finding it when he has looked at it. I've also asked several friends and workers to look at the ceiling and they were all able to spot it immediately (once actually looking at the ceiling). I'm not sure why you can see it, but you can. Are my expectations too high and it is normal to be able to see variances in the ceiling? I don't think it's so bad that your eyes are drawn to it, but if you do look at the ceiling you can clearly tell where the beam runs.
