NC losing it's advantage?
Comments (28)I don't think I've hidden the fact that I am a retail furniture salesman. I don't mention it in every post, but I don't deny it. I think shopping around is a good idea. I've never suggested that somebody NOT shop around. I have said the lowest price isn't always the best deal. There's a big difference. In fact, I was just looking at eyeglasses. I started by asking about prices. They were very taken aback, they're not used to that in an eyeglass store. But I look at it the same as anything else. I'll check them against a couple of other stores. It may be a $350 purchase for me, so I'll see if can't save $50. As for free shipping, I'm too cynical to believe that. Shipping is expensive, more now than ever. Free shipping just means they build it into the price. Anyways, the bottom line is the number you have to write on the check, not how that number is broken down. If a local store is being stubborn on pricing, then you don't buy there. No big deal. Just remember that furniture isn't perfect. A good local dealer will do more for you if you have a minor problem, and do it more quickly. The timing is important if you need to file a chargeback with your credit card company. You can search the posts here for people left high and dry because they didn't file a complaint in time. Where I am, the retail selection is much greater and pricing is more competitive. Where I am you could easily find someone to match or maybe beat the NC price on a Stanley bedroom set. Or you could find something similar imported from China but without the brand name for 20% less, which saves you a lot more than going there. If you don't have enough selection, if the local retailers are difficult to deal with, if the pricing is really that much different, if the sales tax isn't an issue, then yes thats a good reason to buy out of state. So it sounds like buying in NC is the right thing for you to do, especially since you're going there anyways. But I still say that the savings aren't what they used to be, and that most people don't need to go there to fill a house with quality furniture on a budget....See MoreI am very upset. Comments (150)boxerpups - such a sad situation for that young girl - and surely her sister too. it does sound like she is acting out and I do agree that you should contact the teacher. maybe someone can intervene with her. life is tuff enough for young people today and that girl has more than any one young person should have working against her. i don't think i'd go the court route (don't think you will either). in the end it could cause more trouble for your dd and your family than it's worth. i'm not saying the young girl isn't worth it or that we don't have the right to be upset when someone damages our property. but in the end, a fridge is a fridge and hopefully will be fixed w/o much expense. OTOH, I do think the young girl needs confronted about it. for her good! and i think it is something you could handle. holding someone to account is not mean, it is the more loving thing to do for them. short term upset for long term gain. it might not show in her in the near future, but it will be going around in her head that someone was more concerned about her future than a material thing. it sounds like she has been raised to think that things are more important than she is. until you decide how to fix the fridge door, i think i'd use it as a prayer reminder for that young girl. and a thank you for the blessings you and your family have in each other. and as for getting a new puppy after the loss of another very loved furbaby, my belief is that the best way to honor my precious gone to heaven furbaby is to find another furbaby in need of a loving home and lots of spoiling! i think that makes them very happy!...See MoreCustom drawer insert - am I crazy?
Comments (40)Thank you everyone, I am ordering the Lee valley hardware. I will look for different types of wood I can use, but I agree with lowspark, I had already thought of that and decided to line my drawer as she described, also. This thread has a lot of great ideas and information, I hope it sticks around for a while. Obviously a lot of people with similar issues. I had looked at the double decker types and like them but they just don't come with as many dividers as I want. All the dividers will keep things neat, but many allot much more space than I need for each item and so do take full advantage of the space. I really don't need a space 3" wide by 3" high, for instance, just for salad forks or dinner forks. When I measured my flatware, stacking it up only required 1 1/16" wide and 2" high for 12 forks. Service for 18 could be stacked in the same space that is 3" high. I allowed more space for wider tablespoons and teaspoons that I usually have more of. I still had half the dawer left to put other items, which pre-made organizers did not, since they used up so much more space for the flatware. Anyway, most organizers keep stuff organized but do not really maximize use of the space. So the Lee Valley made allow me to do that at a reasonable cost. Otherwise, I may still decide to go custom in the future. Its kind of like stock verses custom cabinets. Custom, if well planned and well done, gets you much better use of your space. I couldn't afford the cabinets, but it might be worth some less expensive customization of the stock cabinets to maximize what I did get. Thanks again for all your help and suggestions. Please feel free to post what you guys do in your drawers and I will let you know how mine work out. Sue...See MoreTax Refund....Am I being greedy???
Comments (40)Wow! Thank you for all of the great advice. In response to Serenity and others with questions: 1. No, I am not B**ching to my husband about the excessive money he spends on his daughter. That's why I'm on this forum. But, after giving it some thought maybe I should be more vocal. I think the reason my husband spent the $1700.00 on her last year behind my back was because he knew it was wrong and couldn't bring himself to tell or ask me. But he also couldn't say "No" to his daughter. 2. No, I do not with hold money from my step daughter. My husband and I do have seperate accounts and we split the bills. I tend to try to spend an equal amount on each child, while he tends to only spend on his daughter. 3. My step-daughter is by no means deprived. She wears designer clothing (because of grandma) while the other children get their clothing from Value Stores, she gets pedicures and manacures, eats out while we eat in, goes on vacation while we get to stay home, and drives around to parties on our gas money. Grandma pays outragous cell phone bills and gives her several hundred dollars a week to spend. 4. Grandma is also grandma to our son, but wants nothing to do with him financially. She says she must focus on my step daughter because she only has one parent (actually she has two, but her mom is a drug addict and a theif) 5. No matter how much I give or how hard I try, my step daughter does not like me. 6. My step daughter dropped out of school because she is allowed to do what ever she wants when ever she wants. She didn't feel like going to school and got kicked out. She would prefer to spend her time with her loser boyfriend. 5. We would never ever allow my step daughter to drive without good brakes, but up until last week there was no good reason for her to be driving around. 6. Grandma bought her the car too. 7. My husband will not stand up to his mom or his daughter. Anytime I try to step in I'm always the bad guy. 8. I know what they are doing is wrong. Children who are given everything appreciate nothing. She has had no job because she didn't need one. She dropped out of school because she didn't see the value in a good education. I truely believe she thinks the gravy train will last forever. 9. It drives me crazy because if she were mine, or even if I would be able to have some say in this situation I believe I could make a huge difference in her life. I'm going to HR on Monday to change how many deductions I take out of my check. It would be nice to have more money to spend thoughout the year. Also, then less of my money will be going to a cause I firmly don't believe in. I will also talk to my husband. If he still wants to spend his money on her that's fine, but I'm getting that swing set for our son before he is too old to enjoy it....See Morekordust
