Glidden's new Ultra High Gloss Trim and Door Paint--NOT happy
Comments (18)For what it's worth, we've had regular (not "High Gloss Trim & Door") Glidden paint on most of the interior and all of the exterior of our home for over 11 years and it's held up very nicely. We used the semi-gloss finish on our upstairs trim and doors. Most of it was sprayed on (not brushed) by our builder's contractors, though we've brushed the semi-gloss onto crown moulding and bead board we added about 8 years ago and painted walls/ceilings ourselves with eggshell/flat. I don't see a quality difference between the walls we've painted ourselves with Glidden vs. those we've painted with Sherwin Williams or Ben Moore's Aura and Regal paints. I don't have an allegiance to one brand of paint and am VERY picky about color, so choose brand depending on which color I like best for a space. I happen to like a lot of Glidden's colors which is why I have a lot of experience with their paints. I think all high-gloss paints are difficult to roll on and get a perfect finish, so wouldn't necessarily blame it on the brand... My husband stained and finished all of our downstairs wood work and doors and originally tried to use a high-gloss clear coat over the stain (I don't remember the brand-- not Glidden though), but decided to switch to a satin clear coat because it was so much easier to apply and get an even finish. The areas where he first applied the high-gloss clear coat (and then went over them later with the satin) don't look as nice as those with just the satin clear coat. He did remove all the doors to finish them horizontally (not the trim work and built-ins)....See MoreHigh Gloss vs semi gloss
Comments (5)I always use a high gloss when painting cabinets or trimwork. It's more durable than the lesser gloss paints. Given the scrubbing that cabinets can get, as well as the wear and tear in opening and closing doors, etc., I go for durability over any consideration. I actually find high gloss to be both traditional or contemporary. In older homes you will see the woodwork done in a glossy oil based paint, which is similar to the high gloss sheen of a latex paint. I wouldn't do less gloss and then do a clear coat myself...so much work for basically the same look as a high gloss really. It is true that flat paint shows less blemishes than the higher glosses, but flat paint is never appropriate for a cabinet (IMO and many others)....See Moremab paint vs sw pro high gloss:maybe this is why the roller marks
Comments (9)Is this a professional painter or just somebody that does painting as a side job? I'd be wondering if it isn't the roller. Rollers come in different naps. Using the right roller for the right project makes a whole lotta difference. I'd also take a peek at how the guy is putting the paint on. Is he over rolling it? Meaning is he putting the roller in the tray and then on the ceiling and trying to cover as much as possible when what he should be doing is getting it up and on and not trying to make it cover so much area. It may also simply need a second coat. And I agree with whoever said you should get the two coats of what you asked for. There may not be a whole lot of difference in the two formulas BUT it may be just enough to affect the final outcome. It's why you PAID for the one you asked for....See MoreTo Gloss or Not to Gloss? High Gloss Cabinets or not
Comments (12)High gloss is not for me. Not because I don't think it can look good in certain applications, but because I would freak out at the first scratch. I learned my lesson (for me only) long ago on furniture and cabinets. In my first home I bought very expensive solid cherry coffee and end tables with a nice beautiful shiny finish. The cat went skidding over the coffee table and left a scratch about ten inches long. There was no way to hide it, buff it out, cover it. I'm better with painted or natural wood finishes that are more forgiving. If you don't have kids, dogs, cats or a spouse, it's probably fine. I remember my nephew once tried to figure out if a piece of jewelry was a real diamond by scratching the glass face of a vintage clock. Yeehaw, it wasn't a diamond but it did scratch the glass......See MoreSusied3
