The thing that comes to mind first is some type of large basket/tub that you could pull out easily. Probably not as nice looking as a proper, installed type of Susan, but also much less expensive.

I had that in my kitchen before the renovation and I found things in there I hadn't used in 7 years!
I would think adding some sort of lid storage to the door would help. SimpleHuman also makes a sliding cabinet organizer that may be useful.

It's worse, because it's deeper front to back than it appears, and of course the blind (deep dark) space goes as far as the DW is deep. :)

Perhaps adding a lid storage container on the door would help. I would swap what's currently on each shelf if I thought it would help.

Have you seen Arlosmom's kitchen? I think she has the slides that you're talking about. I'm sure her idea could work with a fixed shelf. You could use the $50 Lynk slides(bottom mount) from Amazon.

Linelle, thanks for the laugh. The visual of you just tossing things in was priceless. I really had to laugh about you cussing up a blue streak while rooting around in that cupboard! I have to admit that the reason I find it so funny is you could be describing me on the hunt for something.

As much as I am enchanted with the idea that a neat new kitchen will all of a sudden unleash the inner organized goddess in me I know better. I fear no matter how lovely and organized it starts out it will end badly. That inner messy imp in me is sure to win this battle!

laurajane: Thanks for the link to Arlosmom's kitchen. There's one photo remaining, but all the other ones that she used to illustrate what she did are now missing. Her cabinet looks about the same size as mine, but I can't quite picture what she did or whether she bought it somewhere or it was a total DIY.

I don't quite understand the Lynk, but will check it out next time I'm in BB&B.

I think I might try picking up some trays that I can slide in and out of the open space. They don't even need to be on tracks. I'd be happy just to be able to reach all the little lids without screaming.

I had a similar cabinet. Get some smaller baskets/tubs that will allow you to better organize those containers.

Or just get rid of those containers! :) Seriously.....toss out those containers that you've not used in the past 30 days. If you really need them for something you might make in batches, put them in a baskets in the dark recesses of the cabinet and put the most used ones in front.

Please note I have a plastic container disorder. It really helps to keep them organized and stacked or they will drive you nuts!

Linelle, Lynk is just a brand of retrofit roll out trays that seem well reviewed on Amazon. I think you have the same idea with your bins.

dees, toss them out?!! My precious darlings?!!!! I tried that once, any unmatchable containers and lids got tossed. It felt really good. Then I decided saving yogurt containers was a good idea. At least they nest and don't have lids to worry about.

It will be hard to enforce a 30-day rule. Really great items go missing for much longer than that. Hell, if I could find them that easily, I wouldn't have this problem in the first place.

I do think I could divide it all in half, stick some in the garage and see how that goes.

In my old kitchen, we kept all the PCs in a lazy susan. In the new kitchen, I'm planning a drawer for containers. Hopefully I'll be able to organize the containers and lids in a way that my family can put things away in orderly fashion - or at least when things get jumbled, they can't topple as far in a drawer. I'll give you an update in a month, when I've actually been able to try it!

Linelle, I think tubs (I'm thinking dishpan size or a bit bigger) might be your best bet. Yes, you'll have the step of pulling out the tub to retrieve and stash things, but it might help keep things corralled.

annkh, I think the tub idea is the way to go, maybe with lower sides than a dishpan so I can reach in. Assuming the things I want remain in the front. I don't need runners or the thing attached to the floor of the cab. The only saving grace in this addiction is that the items are lightweight and hauling out the entire collection can be done easily.

I'm not too worried with the bowl shelf. They seem to behave themselves and don't multiply like rabbits.

I had the same problem a few years ago in my old kitchen. The kitchen was very small. I had some rectangular pieces, some circular, some oval. It was a haphazard mess.

DH insisted that I limit food storage containers to one shelf, becuase we really needed space for groceries. LOL. I hesitated, but then agreed to get a set of plastics that all stacked. Next to it, I had a bin with all the lids. It was a great solution and I am still glad, in my new kitchen, that my plastics are organized. I also went to the Corning outlet and bought a set of new glass mixing bowls with plastic lids and I bought plastic lids for all my pyrex as well. This gives me extra storage containers when I need them.

My suggestion is to treat yourself to some BPA free, stackables and get rid of your mismatched and yogurt bowls. Change is hard, but you can do it. This will be cheaper than retro fitting the cabinets with pull outs.

Consider taking out the full depth top shelf and putting in a half depth shelf, it allows you to keep the area neater and you can see items better. Also add some of the touch lights that stick to the side of the cabinet and then you can light up the entire space.

ITA on the half-shelf if you can get it out to do it. I also have some of the wire sliders -- mine are Rev-A-Shelf from Lowe's, I think. They work wonders, but won't get that back left dead space you have.

I've used a lot of Interdesign's Fridge Binz in my reno. They are just clear, so you can see what's in them. Used some in my pantry corner. I'm posting an Amazon link to all the clear bins by Interdesign. See if anything looks helpful.
