cream cabinets w/ white subway tile backsplash?

I am having my cabinets painted BM White Dove (I think!) and was thinking of doing a white subway tile backsplash - does anyone have this? is it a problem w/ the colors not matching?

I'm guessing there's a fine line between incorporating a tight color scheme, and just plain boring. If there's no variation, then the light won't hit the surfaces differently and it will look dull.
Personally, I think white dove with white tile would be fine.

Thank you! Cooperbailey and amcofar, your kitchens are beautiful -- mine is, I hope, going in the same cottagey direction. When I looked at the backsplash slideshow I realized that I needed to worry less about the white and offwhite as long as the overall mood/feel stays the same (e.g., don't mix cottagey stuff with high tech).

RJR- I love your glass mosaics with the white subway tile. May I ask what color/brand they are? They look like they might work as an accent for me. Kitchen additct:I googled to find your kitchen, and I do remember seeing it before-probably when I had googled for pics of crema marfil backsplashes! I do love the look of the crema marfil and had ordered a sample. However, my sample doesn't look like a "perfect" fit for my granite, but it is very close to what I think would look good.I had considered ordering another sample of a different kind. Yours really goes with yours. Is yours the turkish or Spanish crema marfil? I understand that there are different types and grades, and I wonder if that can affect the shading. thanks Boxer pups for the photos. The first one looks similiar to my cabinet color and granite color. I remember seeing this photo before. In looking at it- I don't think the backsplash does anything special for the kitchen-sort of plain vanilla. I think I'd like something to jazz it up, personally-maybe- like a row of glass mosaics?

nik, Welcome! A couple of thoughts: if you love absolute black but are worried about maintenance, look at a leathered finish. It is much more forgiving than the polished finish to smudges, etc. There might be a reason you aren't seeing a lot of pictures with your color cabs and white tile - you might be right and it might be too bright. Try to get some sample tiles and bring them home and tape them to the wall to get an idea. You might find the answer really fast! Check the Finished Kitchen blog and Backsplash slideshow (link to FKB below, backsplash slideshow at FKB) for more pics to see if anyone else has done it - there are lots of successful rule breakers here! Maybe consider an off-white subway. Again checking a sample in your kitchen with your cabs and counter will help. If you both love the glass mosaic you might be able to incorporate it in a small area - like behind the backsplash or as an accent with 2 or 3 rows of mosaic between rows of subway - there are some examples in the finished backsplashes. I have the Subway Ceramics Avalon / Minas with a medium gray grout. And a Shaw's white sink, if anyone is considering that, by the way. (My contractor could have ordered it directly, but at his request, I went through a tile store, and by the time everyone had put their sugar onto it, it was OBSCENELY expensive.) I'm not an installation expert, but at least with the Subway Ceramics, the installers use little plastic spacers between the tiles (I think some others have their own spacers?) when they put them up, they don't do it freehand, so how much grout you get is a function of 1) the limits set by the curvature of the tile and 2) what size spacers they use. So you might be willing to go a little darker with a smaller grout line, or with a handmade tile that refuses to go close together, you might want to stay light. The traditional color is close to concrete. But most modern people don't seem to like that, so do what pleases you!

Here's one thread that might help. There was another one recently in which the OP thought she had gone with the wrong color tile. It was white or off-white cabinets and the same with the tile, but I couldn't find it in a search. Several people posted helpful thoughts.

I think, contrary to what peace_rose said, the light will play differently off lower and upper cabinets and above counter even if you have the same color in all 3 places. Your counter and paint colors as well as kinds and location/direction of light sources will make a difference.

I personally love subway tile and think it looks great with whatever it's paired with. White Dove and white sound lovely!

We painted upper cabs White Dove and have the white subway tile. I love it.
Because I have white appliances I chickened out with doing white on both uppers and lowers. With white tiles, cabs, appliances, light floor..I feared it was all too sterile. So, we tried to do a darker lower cabinet color. It's just not dark ENOUGH. And will be repainted when I get around to. I'm just not in a hurry.
