I would get rid of the prep sink. I think it looks kind of strange to have two sinks in an island. if you want more refrigeration, you could switch the microwave drawer to the left side of the cooktop and do fridge drawers where the microwave was.

Don't get rid of the prep sink. Move one of the pantries (I'm thinking the top one, then scoot the Fridge up - you will need a 9" or 12" filler b/t Fridge and wall so the Fridge can fully open, and that filler can be a pullout pantry) next to the ovens, then put cleanup on the left wall. The sink doesn't need to be centered perfectly in between the two windows - you can center it under one of the windows, or use an undermount sink and just center the faucet under one or both windows. Then the island can become all normal depth cabinets facing the range, plus 12" cabinets behind those.

You might also consider moving the ovens to the bottom of that left wall, then just having shallow pantry storage all along the bottom wall - it can be as deep as the brick chimney. If you do that, you then have enough room for seating at the bottom of that island - the island would then become normal depth cabs facing the range with a 15" overhang at the bottom.

It looks like the left wall as you have it might be a baking area, maybe with a lower counter? I would then put that at the right end of the island. It's a bit of a walk to the Ovens but perhaps you would be OK with that.

The two sinks make sense, with your layout. I like it, but I don't like losing light/windows for the orchids! Can you put a shallow pantry in front of the bricks, then the fridge with counter (maybe microwave here) then the other pantry...on that wall to the dining room?

Then, the window wall could be ovens at the top (by back door) with lots of windows...and then the other pantry (for baking, etc.) by the dining room doorway.

The range and sinks seem fine to me (like the bookcase at the end of the range area) but I would swap the trash and drawers, to the right of the main sink.

I'd rather have the view while I'm baking (and larger windows!) to light up my work area, than a smaller view/window, for times I'm grabbing something out of the fridge. Just my two cents :)

If you do move the fridge, I would add a fridge drawer(s) to the island (across from range) or where you have the microwave...if you plan to move the microwave over to the fridge wall.

I think having the fridge on that back (dining) wall will make it easier for people to access drinks, etc. without getting in your way. Especially when you're baking or cooking...but while they're over there, they can load the dishwasher for you :)

Hi, there. I'm off to bed but want to comment quick. While being shown a house for sale, I came within a tiny fraction of a second of a VERY bad fall down a steep, long flight of stairs to a basement, which would have ended abruptly against a concrete wall. I thought the door, between 2 bedrooms, was for a bath and was chatting over my shoulder as I started to march in. Then and now, remembering, I believe severe injury would have been inevitable and plegia and even death very real possibilities.

In any case, since there's no landing inside your basement door, I'd suggest anything and everything to slow people down and keep them from just marching through. You are already opening out, which is the main thing, of course, but I really like hinging the door on that side specifically because it makes it a barrier to passage. Grab door knob and step BACK to open. Great!

I probably should have linked to my earlier attempt(s) (I'll see if I can figure out how), or included my previous plan, or at least summarized what we're aiming for - we really want 2 separate sinks (& I REALLY want a double!), & I'm trying to put dish storage near DW & 1 sink while having a sink available near cooktop. I'm hoping that the overall size of the island will allow for both sinks w/out excessive strangeness, but I'll try doing some sort of mockup to get a better feel. Fridge drawers - or even one - in the cooktop run is a possibility that we'll certainly consider.

Again, I should have restated some things: existing kitchen has cleanup on left wall, & we're trying to move it away & out of sight line from dining rm (& also provide "staging area" counter space near DR entry). You're right, I'm considering lowering that left wall counter run for use also in baking. We didn't think of using a pullout as filler to enable fridge to be farther "up" on wall near kitchen entry - I must research how much space various models need to open doors fully. You noticed that the island is kind of a jigsaw puzzle of 24" & 16" deep elements! I'll keep playing w/ the pieces, & would be happy to hear more of your ideas.

Hi again, lavender lass! Fear not for the orchids - the window & counter extension are the same size as last plan (window 4' wide), although the counter they front shrank from 7 1/2' to 4 1/2' long. Still thinking of your message ctr idea for the chimney! Ovens at one end or other of left wall (also per tracie.erin) is intriguing, but then back to fridge across island from cooktop, & that presents more angst to me than ovens there - esp. if we put one oven below cooktop. Drawer/trash swap makes big sense! I may have to lure a team of elves to live under the sink to load the DW, though!!

Rosie - YIKES!!! Thank heavens you didn't take that tumble, & I didn't even THINK of that aspect, distressingly enough. But which side of hinging (R or L, looking @ plan) do you think would be best? Wasn't sure from your comment, & really value the opinion of one who's "been there & ALMOST done that"!
