Update for Cherry Cabinets??

Hi to all! We moved into our 'new' home one year ago, and are getting ready to start a kitchen remodel. The current cabinets are 19-year old cherry cabinets in very good shape - I've already done new hardware, but they're just a little plain to me and in need of some kind of update. We've decided to add crown molding at the top, some bottom trim, and under-cab lighting. We're also replacing the white Corian countertops with some kind of stone, and we're going to install wood flooring. And we're designing a new island (possibly black) to accommodate a new gas cooktop. But I'm wondering if any of you have attempted to apply a dark glaze or stain onto your cherry cabinetry. Just to highlight the recesses and give a little warmth or depth to the cherry. Any ideas or suggestions for me?? I'm in the process of getting a couple of bids from professionals, but wonder if there is some DIY option. Thanks.
