I have a new kitchen with 3 recessed canister sizes. In the 6 inch canisters I have the Cree LR6 LED lights and I love them. (I wish I had caught the contracter in time to have had the LR4's installed.) I have one 5" canister (had to go with that as where I wanted it conflicted with duct work) and two 4" canisters over the sink. What floods will fit in those canisters without sticking out the bottom? We have 2 different CFL floods (don't ask me what brand) and neither of them fit. Help! (I'm tempted to make him change the 4" to 6" and get 2 more LR6's.)

4' fixtures will be rather spotty if you are using them for geeral light. The bulb is rather limited. If you must use 4' 12V would be better. Much more choice of bulbs. Any good name brand will perform and gimbal are a nicecoice because they are adjustable. Yo can also use an adjustable baffle as well. They are nice because the bulb is away from the ceiling line so no glare. Don't buy generic 12 volt fixtures. Stick with the big guys on this one. Juno, Halo, Lightolier are all good brands. Before anyone can give you advise about the recessed you should use and placement, they would need more information than you have provided. Ceiling height, colors of materials being used in the room, cabinet and work center arrangements, etc. Remember all that wonderful light coming in from outside is not there at night! I guess my main take-away, which I don't seem to be communicating very well, was that there was something about the 5" (or are they 4"?) that looked significantly better (and less cheese hole like) than the 6" cans in her home on similar ceilings. They just looked a LOT less obtrusive. I think part of it was the size in our small homes with short ceilings. But, I think part of it was also that the inner area was different. The bulbs were not receded into the cans. Instead, there was some kind of casing that was even with the ceiling and the bulb area was small (maybe 2"?) and even with that line, too. The lighting was not diffuse. It was more sparkley and bright. It was just really interesting, given there were cans on in the adjoining DR that were the 6" we've been considering - and could still use in our adjoining hallway. I'm explaining this HORRIBLY. I should have taken pics. Is anything I am saying making sense? Do you have any idea what lights were in that kitchen?

Jan Moyer, thank you! Tems, I can't speak for others, but I've only had recessed lighting (in our now demolished kitchen) and would never consider not replacing it. I need a bright kitchen. Recessed lights help illuminate the floor/walkway, as well as add light to the countertops. I'd noticed mine did cause a slight shadow in the front, but not so detrimental to my cooking. However, the addition of 2700 LED's will now (hopefully) remove that, and further brighten my future workspace. I do not find them to be harsh or busy, but again, for the kitchen (and utility/laundry room) I need 'brightness'. Are you suggesting only undercabinet lights, and pendants or a center light in a kitchen? I want to see in my cabinets, my counter tops, my sinks, see where I'm walking, see my entire kitchen. Without the recessed lights, I'd have a dark kitchen.
