I am back for yet another kitchen remodel..Peninsula range hood?

So, we moved to Florida. We are in the process of closing on a house, small, but in a great neighborhood. The kitchen needs to be gutted...it's far from functional.

We are planning on removing the wall between the kitchen and the dining room. The problem is that the washer and dryer are in the kitchen as well (not planning on removing them to another room in the house)and we have two windows, so there isn't a lot of wall space to work with.

The designer we are working with came up with the design below, but I am not crazy about having the range/cooktop on the peninsula.

The house is not big, so the idea of a hood coming down on the peninsula, I think, will crowd the space, even if its a slim chimney type hood. What do you guys think? Also, do I even need a hood? The range/cooktop HAS to be electric.

Orignally we had planned on putting the range where the frige is on this design, but then the fridge would have to go on the wall where one of the peninsula drawer base cabinets is and then the wall between the dining room and the kitchen would have to come into the peninsula a bit. Make sense?

The we thought about putting the fridge where the pantry near the dining room is, but then fridge would go into the dining room space, and we have different ceiling heights in the dining room and kitchen.

So at this point I think the attached drawing is the best although I am not crazy about the range on the peninsula issue.

Is there a way you can post a whole house layout so we can have a better idea how the space orients to the rest of the house? Can there be any window changes? Where does the doorway on the left lead? Depending on all your responses I could see placing the range where the w/d is, the sink on the peninsula and the w/d and frig on the right wall.

I have friends with a sleek, slim, flat, Futurofuturo hood over their peninsula cooktop. It's beautiful and not very obtrusive.

As for whether you need one, I'd say yes. I have an induction cooktop (is that what you'll be getting?) and I run the fan a lot, especially when I'm boiling or simmering. In Florida, I would think you'd rather not add any more heat or humidity to your air than you can help. You just don't need as much CFM as for gas. I wonder if you could get a strong one and hang it a little higher. Aren't there also vents that go right in the ceiling? They won't be as effective, but maybe better than nothing.

With the cooktop on the peninsula, you have drawers right there for the pots and pans, utensils, and spices as well as a lot of counter work space on either side. If the range is put where the fridge is now, would your working counter space be over the washer/dryer?

I would also avoid a range and go with a separate cooktop and oven for several reasons. First, the oven: I would get a good 24"/60cm electric oven - the Gaggenau is my favorite because of its side-opening door (no reaching over or around the usual drop-down door to insert or remove your food) and its efficient use of space - very little devoted to the control panel, most used for the oven cavity. And its height is short enough to fit a 6" drawer above it - great storage for cooking utensils, especially if your cooktop is directly above it (you'll need to choose a cooktop that's thin, and whose installation instructions don't say it requires lots of space below it). Several other brands are the same size if you need something less expensive, although I don't know of any with a side-opening door. But rather than a 24" cooktop, I would get a 2-burner 12" or 15" cooktop for a small apartment. Think about it - do you ever use more than two at once? (If one is used for a water kettle, install an instant-hot water dispenser and you can free up that burner). Many good ones are available in this size, both electric and gas. If you're worried you may occasionally need a third burner, keep an inexpensive portable electric burner (or double burner) in one of your cabinets - these are cheap and they work reasonably well. The rest of the time, enjoy the extra 12" of countertop space! Another space saver - use an undermount sink (which shaves off 4 to 5" of width already) about 21" x 17" and mount it "sideways" so it's nearly the full length of the countertop front to back, but only the smaller dimension in width. This will yield the same space as a traditional 25"w x 22"l kitchen sink, but turned 90 degrees from typical. That won't leave any room for a faucet behind it, so either use a wall-mount faucet (preferable) or mount a single-hole faucet near one of the rear corners. Drain in the rear corner is best - it won't get covered up by the first dinner plate you put in the sink, plus the disposer beneath it also moves to the back corner of your cabinet, where it doesn't get in the way. A drain centered front to back, but off to one side is second best; avoid drains in the center. In any case, this arrangement buys considerable extra countertop width without reducing the usable space in the sink.

susanpn- Thank you for your kind words, right now it's an unfitted and, well, undone kitchen, hopefully before too long it will just be unfitted, we are inching our way towards the finish line. The ceiling is doug fir (untreated) beadboard, the thing that look like a track is actually a cedar board, the ceiling is laid in a grid pattern to break up the expanse of the somewhat fussy beadboard. We have a wood hood (without liner or blower) that I bought when a local tile place was changing out their displays. It was a corner installation over a 36" range, sort of a farmhouse-cum-vintage something or other style, and I think it will work. I will post pics when we are finished. Also, as I look at these pics, I see how pathetic the range looks without the side shelving and counters, I will take a pic of that and try to post tonight. sandyponder

I never even thought of an up-light fixture. That could certainly add a nice ambiance when task lights aren't needed. I will play with that idea. Thanks! Yeah, I figured you didn't notice the window issue, lol. I was thinking about mid-point between wall and edge of counter and tried to center my little circles to show that. 10" from counter makes sense, too. I've never heard an exact placement so I was guessing. It seems that so many lighting plans I look at have the light fixture half on the counter and half off into the aisle and this makes no sense to me as your head would be blocking the light. We are going with the flush mounts as we have a weird ceiling issue. We have a false ceiling of of 1/4" plywood, then 4" gap, then another ceiling of 3/4" plywood. Directly above that is the attic which has about 15" of loose insulation in it that has never been disturbed. We don't wish to disturb it now. My DH says it will be a lot easier to cut holes in the false ceiling and then pull/fish the wires up the wall (breaker box is in the garage below) than to have to cut through the 3/4" plywood and line up both holes correctly in both ceilings. Makes sense to me. I think the flush mounts look fine and really don't drop down much more than the decorative edge for the can lights. I have also read that they tend to have greater coverage as the light is lower than the ceiling and shines out from the rounded edge of the light, where it meets up with the rim, instead of being more recessed and, thus, a bit shaded on the edge. Not sure if that's accurate or not but it makes sense to me, too. Do you know anything about the flush-mount LEDs that I should be concerned about? Thanks again for your help.

It does really help to see the whole kitchen. I am also one of those that does not care for the smaller tiles - no matter what pattern. It's just a personal preference. I don't think it matters so me that the entire kitchen is white (I happen to love white kitchens), I just find those small busy patterns to be distracting rather than appealing. I dunno why...it's just me. I think subway tile is wonderful, honed marble is stunning, tumbled too. I also love solid glass backsplashes. But I know my tastes are more muted than many, so I am trying to take that into account when I see posts like this. :-) And to be perfectly honest, since I have been visiting this forum (less than a year) I have noticed that my tastes are expanding a bit. That said, it is SO helpful to see the entire kitchen. I can understand the desire to have more visual interest given the wider all-white pic. But that island print - yeah no. LOL.

I'd like to see the adjoining areas too. I'm thinking like remodelfla -- you would be better off moving the W/D and creating a galley kitchen that might have some extra storage on the long hall wall. If moving the water supply and drains is a problem (realize Florida might have concrete slabs like we do), then I would put the sink on that W/D walland the range would still be on the peninsula side, but look at a glass hood. I've seen plenty that look good over a peninsula. I know Candice Olsen has done one or more.

I think the bigger issue is how that space works for you, and with 2 windows and 3 doorways in a small space, you have a better foyer than kitchen right now. It will function better if you can isolate the cooking tasks from the laundry (do you really want dryer lint where you are cooking anyway?). That looks like a galley with a hallway laundry pair either under the window or stacked to one side of the window. Assuming you need the three passage ways, I would consider keeping one large window and possibly closing up one or changing it to transom or backsplash windows. That gets involved in exterior factors and may or may not work for design, budget or other reasons, but I'd at least ask yourself those kind of questions now. Make sure you have thought about where the light comes from and how it shines into the kitchen -- now and with harsher angles in the winter. You may have views and light you cannot part with, but you could also have some harsh glare and heat.

Do you have countertop over the W/D? It looks like you have very little counter space.

I agree about the lack of counter space. There doesn't seem to be a place for a pan and 4 dinner plates to plate up the food for serving.

I would insist on the W and D being under counter.

Also consider to not have the washer and dryer next to each other, if having washer where it is, with sink and DW would be better. Then have dryer on the island.

Also consider to not have sink centered, but more toward the end of the counter run. This can give a longer run of counterspace.
