Question on tiling a window sill

Hi all,

I'm in the process of tiling a window sill using glass subway tiles. I wanted to know if I need to put a backerboard or something equivalent on the top portion. I will be using Versabond as the thinset. Thinset instruction says not to use on hardwood for some reason. The window sill is next to a faucet so there will be some splashing.

Currently, the tiles are nicely spaced with each other. If I use a 1/4" backerboard on the top, the tiles will have a noticeable gap.
