Please review bid/job quote

I would love some feedback on our contractors quote. Our kitchen remodel is a relatively small job but we are absolutely not handy and can't tackle it ourselves.

Below photo is our current kitchen. Here is a quick run down of what we are planning to do:

  1. We are having the cabinets painted an off white by a painter friend.

2. On the double oven wall we are having the double oven and cabinet taken out and the middle 30 inch upper and lower cabinet will slide to the right where the double oven is now.

3. a gas range will go into the spot where that middle cabinet was.

4. a new island in a dark espresso ordered from Home Depot (not installed)

5. All counter tops and island will be replaced with Torquay or another cararra marble type material.

6. Some new under cab lights installed.

7. the current upper cabinet over the sink will be replaced with a shorter 36 inch cabinet.

8. New stainless apron front sink and faucet and dishwasher

9. some type of back splash most likely a subway tile of some sort.

Soooo, my question is how should we handle the remodel interms of labor so it saves us the most money?

Today we got a quote from a "general contractor" that we had come bid the project. He would bring in a electitian friend and plumber friend for the job and this is what his break down looked like:

Electrical work includes - removal and re-install island outlets

- re-install 240 volt for island oven

- new 15 amp circuit for new gas range and hood

- disconnect dbl.oven and remove wire

- re-arrange wire for new

undercab and cabinet puck lites

- remove old undercab lites

-hang owner provided under cab

lites and puck lites

$1800.00 total

Plumber -plumber came in at $615 for running gas and $540 to install our

faucet and hook up sink and dishwasher.

The general contractors cost was $1100 and basically that included taking the wall oven cabinet out, moving the middle cabinet to that spot and taking the upper cab over sink out and replacing with new shorter cab. He would also install our new island from Home Depot.

The electrician would be helping him with most of the "heavy work" that the couldn't do by himself.

What is the most cost effective way to handle this project? Do we hire an electrician and plumber ourselves and explain to them what needs to be done? Then do we look for a "handy man" to come and do the heavy work that essentially the contractor would b e doing? Would we save money this way or it more complicated than that?

thanks for any feedback!
