Butcher block w/Waterlox finish...not what I expected
Comments (24)Thanks for all of your input. I've discovered what was in the container that came along with my countertop - mineral oil. Which explains why the countertops have not performed up to my expectations. After talking to my contractor and the fabricator, I believe the breakdown in communication was with the office staff of the contractor who actually placed the order for the top. They did not specify a waterlox finish that I had emphatically requested. So...my contractor has agreed to refinish the tops himself with waterlox. During this discovery process, I talked to the man who owns the company that made my countertops. He said the process to re-do the finish would be to go over the wood with mineral spirits a couple of times to draw out the oil as much as possible (I have not added any more oil). Go over the wood with a fine grit sandpaper to smooth the roughness and then proceed with the waterlox application. One coat per day. Can anyone who has experience with this process give me advice? Will these steps be enough to get a professional finish on the tops? I am disappointed that I will not be able to finish the undersides of the counters because they are already bolted down to the cabinets. I am afraid that may cause problems down the road. Any input from experienced users of waterlox would be greatly appreciated!!...See MoreHoned white or off-white granite or butcher block?
Comments (8)Shoot...I've looked the best I can, but does anyone else remember a kitchen with Kashmir White that I'm pretty sure was honed...It had a few red Asian accessories I think. I've looked through 'categories' on the FKB but couldn't find it. Kitokeefe mentioned on the white granite thread that she has honed KW, but I can't find any photos of her kitchen either. Jbrodie, honed or satin-finish Kashmir White was my dream counter for my island, but the $2300 bid brought it to an end. (I think that was even for polished, which was probably less expensive, since more readily available.) Anyway, in my research I was convinced that it could stand up to my family after being properly sealed. If it didn't stay pristine, I was prepared to deal with a bit of 'patina' over time. Many people have honed marble (now even higher on my dream counter scale) and it seems to be fine...and most granites should be tougher and less absorbant than the marble. Try getting a sample to do your own stain testing. Try one bare, and one sealed...or try a few different sealers. I think the stone would take more of a beating than butcherblock...Will tolerate heat and won't dent as easily. It also depends on the wood species and how you plan to finish the butcherblock. We ended up with wood on our island and finished it with several coats of Waterlox for water resistance since we won't be cutting on ours. The finish is quite durable and protective...but not heat resistant, and we used fir, so the wood itself isn't very hard. There are dents already, but we expected them....See MorePlease help choose Colors/Stain Gray Cabinet Butcher Block Counter top
Comments (6)I would love to see how it turned out. We're doing a very similar renovation. So far our walls are alabaster and we've only purchased lower cabinets. I painted them Mindful Gray (BM). We just purchased our counter tops yesterday and they are unfinished butcher block. So now I'm panicking on what stain to use on them (our floors are Allen + Roth Russet Oak Laminate). I don't want the floors & counter tops to be too matchy and I'm considering just oiling them without staining. So many decisions!...See MoreBest way to stain and seal butcher block
Comments (34)We did oak on our island and stained it dark (Early American mixed with a little Jacobean from Minwax) and then wiped on several coats of Old Masters finish. It looked great - for years. We ate at it, rolled dough on it and generally used it the same as a table top (because essentially that is what it was). We are also in the middle of nowhere (just north of you) and had a carpenter make it for us. I think it cost $500 but that was 12 years ago. Our recent island is made with maple butcherblock and I didn't want it stained so I left it natural but finished it in Osmos instead. I might sand it down and do the Old Master's again as I prefer that finish but the Osmos was easier to do. ETA: We thought we would not finish the new maple top at all and just oil it periodically. That turned out to be a PIA and so we did the Osmos after a few months of trying the oiling....See MoreCircus Peanut
