Storage suggestions for open shelving

We've decided to have an area 2 feet wide (where a dishwasher used to be) be redone as open shelving to store 2 kinds of rice, lentils and other things I use almost daily in soup making. Obviously, I need some canisters.

But, they must be beautiful! I'd like them to have an Old World/Renaissance kind of look, and not be in graduated sizes. I'd be willing to haunt ebay to find the ride kinds of things - I just don't know where to begin.

Would love if people could post pix or links to their own favorite crockery. Plain crocks might work too, maybe early 20th century ones - I just don't even know what's available.

But I am looking for something that would be eye-catching. Overall, the kitchen is in cherry with black galaxy granite and maple flooring, modern range hood - just want a touch of Old World elegance at this place in the heart of the kitchen.

Any suggestions, clues or hints would be much appreciated.
