suggestions for dressing up an island

For those of you who didn't buy a custom-made island and used a row of kitchen cabinets, I'd love some ideas or examples of what you've done to dress up the back and sides of the island. From what I understand they usually put backerboard on the cabinets, right? I've seen at least one kitchen on this forum where they added picture molding and I thought it looked good, but I'd love to know what other options there are.

I have a friend who suggested slate tiling on the back of the island(my kitchen will be a modified galley and the back of the island will be the first and main view as you come in the door. I love slate but I worry that it might look too heavy, since my kitchen is going to be cream colored cabinets with steel countertops--still debating what the island countertop will be.
