Barn Kitchen almost finished

I posted a question back in January about style advice for our barn. ÃÂ I got some great ideas and then ultimately disappeared on here (you can imagine how hard it is to get to the computer with a 4 year old and a 2 year old:) ÃÂ But here I am with some almost finished pictures I took of our barn "apartment". ÃÂ The lights are being built (they are barn style pendants) and the furniture and accessories are not in, but the basics are and I'm thrilled with how it turned out. My cabinet maker is using some of the wood remnants to build a plate rack/shelf for just above the sink in between the windows.

This is a new build barn in Montana. ÃÂ We finished the upstairs of the barn to be able to stay here when we want to (and I have a feeling DH is going to do some serious convincing to live here full time) ÃÂ DH was dead set on stained cabinets, otherwise I was considering grey or green, but he won out with rustic alder. ÃÂ It took lots of samples to get the stain right so it wasn't super orange, and I really like it. The granite is seaweed and the tile backsplash is Daltile urban putty. I wanted it simple with all the wood and it needed to be light so I went with *gasp* subway tile:) The floors are circular sawn hickory. ÃÂ The ceiling through the whole structure is cedar plank with douglas fir beams. ÃÂ The structure is post and beam. ÃÂ I'll post a finished post when it's all done with all the specs, but feel free to ask questions in the meantime. ÃÂ I just love seeing other people's finsihed spaces so I thought I'd share. ÃÂ This forum has been so helpful to me during our last house remodel and this project that I wanted to show you all what you helped me create:)

Hi Jennifer. Thanks so much. Our marble has held up beautifully. It is honed, not polished which certainly helps. I have had it professionally sanded and sealed once (and probably should seal it more often). I don't see many/any etch marks on it, but when I do see one I have found a fine scouring pad that buffs the mark out. I have had a few small stains and found that a little bit of soft scrub will take it right out. The only place in the kitchen where there is a slight issue is behind my range where the marble has yellowed a bit from the heat or steam. At first, I would religiously clean that area because it bothered me so much. Six years on, the color has mellowed into the marble a bit and it doesn't bother me at all. I will add that we are not careless cooks. If we use anything acidic we are very careful. I have large cutting boards that we use for all food prep. If there are spills, we clean them up right away. I have no regrets and have raised two boys from age 9/12 to 15/18 with the marble. I have no regrets and still love it. If I did it over again I would use the same marble, but I would probably do something different behind my range. My kitchen cabinets are about ready for a touch-up, but the marble looks great! Thanks for all the positive reviews. Natebear - another GWer gave me the website for the canisters from chefscatalog.com See link below. Now I have to figure out a way to store my tomatoes. Right now they're on the counter. suziqzer - I would love to see your pictures of the fireplaces and the mantels you used. Another room had a wall covering the fireplace. When the contractors were here we had them take the wall down. That brick was never suppose to be exposed but we will probably keep it as is. We may have to clean it up more. Not as pretty and "clean" as other brick walls. I have to figure out a mantel. All the other fireplaces on the 1st floor are marble or another stone (possibly slate - trying to figure that one out since it's painted and I will eventually strip it). I think the stone mantels in our house give a more formal presence and this FP does not have it. dallen11 - tapmaster and soap dispensers really help a lot in the kitchen with food allergies. I can easily wash my hands 10 times while preparing dinner. We're always worried about cross contamination. I have 8+ cutting boards so I never run out plus plenty of knives. Twn85, You are extremely talented and I would love a kitchen like yours. I love the backsplash, love the counters, love the high end appliances and the range hood, love the floors, love the hardware on the cabinets, love the faucet, love no soffit, love the doggie dish area, and I actually love the way the cabinets with the glass look in your kitchen. To me from the pictures everything is just beautiful! How tall are your cabinet doors? What size trim at the top of the cabinets and is that from Ikea? Where did you buy your curtains for that large window by the table and chairs? What size cans did you use for the lights and which light bulbs and wattage? What is the depth of your counters? How did you make the surround that covers the sides of the refrigerator? Thank you for sharing. Beautiful kitchen.

What a nice structure, and in such beautiful country, Countrygirl. I can certainly think of worse things than living there full time. DH's idea for the built-in sound system? :) I really like the way all the surfaces pull together, and the way evoke the outdoors. We built a bookcase very similar to that one, but in the eaves in our attic bedroom. Congrats, and happy cooking.

Yes I would love to live here full time, its just quite remote and we have little kids so that is my hangup. Something to consider though.

Yes, DH absolutely had to put in the sound system. We have a sonos in our home and we went ahead and wired the barn for it too. Its amazing how technology can allow you to control the world with your iPhone!

Thanks for the kind comments. I just love the light that the cupola's let in too! The view is normally much better, but its still spring in MT so the fog and endless rain is upon us. Today is much better though. It lifts my spirits when I can see the sun for sure!

Countrygirl, I live in Texas.

When I was 17, my parents took me to Montana for my graduation present because for some reason, it was the one state that we hadn't visited that I LONGED to visit.
We stayed in a town called Red Lodge, ate at this restaurant called The Round Barn, daily, and we visited other parts of the state as well. This was in 1976, we had a motor home, and when we crossed the Montana state line into Wyoming to head home, I cried all the way to Colorado. I BEGGED them to let me stay there, go to college, just let me OUT, I will find a way to live!! LOL, needless to say, they brought me home and were probably miserable with my behavior.

All that to say, Your home reminds me of why I cried to stay in Montana, and it is as LOVELY as I remember seeing.
I'm so envious, your kitchen is beautiful, the views are stunning, and can I come stay with you?

Those hickory floors are to die for, and I love knotty aulder, that is what my island will be. But, it ain't Montana.

First, Thank You for the picture of the view. It was the first thing I thought when reading the post..."I hope there is a picture of the view"... More would be appreciated.

Your kitchen is perfect. I can't imagine anything else in that space.

@Susied3 We live in Missoula. I can identify with your appeal of Montana for sure. We uprooted our family from TN and moved her one year ago and haven't looked back. We miss people and things about the south, but are absolutely in love with our lifestyle, surroundings and home in Montana. (We got some strange reactions when we moved here, sometimes I feel like my life theme song is Chris Ledoux "Western Skies") I was in Red Lodge not long ago. It is very beautiful there for sure! Although it's beautiful everywhere in this part of the country:)

@beekeeperswife The next time I'm down there and you can actually see apart from the fog I'll post a better view picture:) Just off to the right of the kitchen is double doors that open to a deck that look back directly to the national forest.

LOL... What is it about Montana? We went there 12 years ago for my BIL's wedding and we thought it was amazing. DH, the kids who are old enough to remember, and I still talk about it. We could almost feel the stress in the environment when we got back into Western Washington and into the suburbs near the city, where everyone was tensely tied to their electronics and rushing about. I almost felt like crying, too, Susie. I looked at real estate ads in Montana occasionally for years. Life seemed 'more real' in MT where there were the more basic struggles of physical labor, weather, and terrain. (I'm sure they have electronics, too...Like iPhone music in the barn!) The people were so nice and helpful to each other, and I love a town where combines drive the streets. ;-)

We went to Montana last summer and I could not believe how open and majestic it was. We saw hundreds of.buffalo, pronged antelopes,etc! I was amazed. What a fabulous kitchen that just "goes" with the setting.

I can relate to the feelings of moving!! We get the same strange reactions when we say we are moving to Kentucky(from SE Texas). It IS hard to leave our friends here, and the little bit of family, but we will have a place that is OURS, not MIL's (even though we Own it technically, but not emotionally) , and not trying to constantly put band aids on things that are not worth redoing....

Thanks everyone! Yes, it is a majestic place. We regularly see elk outside in the field, but I have only seen them a couple times. DH sees them often when he is working down there. I'm excited to be there and able to glance out the window at them casually. And I was just in Houston last month and after living here for a year and out of the "city" I was amazed how hard it was for me to adjust. I felt like I was in an alternate universe filled with concrete and cars and mean people. It was nice to enjoy the city amenities for a few days but when I stepped out of the airport in Montana I breathed a sigh of relief:) Hopefully I'll have a truly finished kitchen post in 2 weeks or so if anyone is interested in seeing the final product. I'll be sure to post details and show cabinet features. Our cabinet guy was just fantastic! We used a big box company for our house and this guy for the barn was a fraction of the cost and the quality was 10X better!
