Countertop Question...using two different

Here is my dilemmaÃ¯Â¿Â½..We are expanding our kitchen and dining room. Bumping out our existing kitchen/dining room 8Ã¯Â¿Â½ x 22Ã¯Â¿Â½. So excited to get this rolling. Trying to get ideas for countertop. Originally my husband and I really wanted quartz or granite. However, due to the large amount of countertop we would need, we are beginning to think our budget just wonÃ¯Â¿Â½t handle it. We are looking at 97 sq. ft. countertop. We have decided to have a 9 ft. peninsula with a raised bar 18" wide.

What do you think about using the new Formica 180xf for the main countertops and then using a granite or quartz for our raised bar? Has anyone here ever done this? Any pictures would be appreciated.

Thank you for any suggestions that you may have.

I would go one or the other. In my old house we did mostly formica and then a corian for coffee area and it didn't really make it any better for the price. Having 2 different type of surfaces may just clash espeically if you do a granite like formica.

Have you shopped around for granite? its a lot cheaper than it used to be.

I think having the granite or quartz on the raised counter will look nice. Maybe tie that color in with the dining room and have the formica match the kitchen colors. A fun accent (like blue or green) on the raised peninsula could be a real conversation piece...but of course, neutrals are always nice, too :)

IMHO, it only works well if the countertop is a different height than the other countertop run. It doesn't have to be but a couple of inches higher or lower, but that's what visually looks best to transition. Same height transitions look a bit awkward, and you always have that caulk line in between the two different materials. Even a good caulk line will get old and look grubby and fail in time.

Definitely match the edge! I am assuming you will have an overhang of stone just below that stainless? I just installed my counter tops and sick that I did pay close enough attention to the edges. I will try and post a pick later - I have 3 different corners - squared, rounded, and extra rounded - within a few feet. The fabricator said the rounded edges were necessary to prevent someone knocking the corners off. At the time, I didn't really picture it so I didn't object. If I could have a "do over", I would do it all squared off. Maybe it wouldn't bother other people, but I will have to always avoid looking directly at that area.

Heatheron40, very nice. I asked a question about doing a tile countertop in our guest cabin recently as I feel like the look would complement the cabin aesthetic. Also I’m dying to learn to tile and thought it would be a fun place to start as it’s not an everyday space and I could take my time. Most of the responses were against. Basically stating the grout would make me crazy. The guy at the said what you’re saying I think, he said that modern grouts are more resistant to staining and such, and also to go with a tinted grout of some sort. I love your use of pattern to give it interest and intention!

As long as they go together without one looking like an imitation of the other, it can be a nice way to go. It especially works if the granite bar is hanging on the more formal side, which may or may not be the case for you. Granite's just a little more appropriate for being out of the kitchen than laminate somehow.
