countertop material without seams for large island

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post...I found this forum after most of my planning and layouts were finished but, I have a counter question. Originally I wanted marble for the island with a black material (simple matte without alot going on) for the perimeter but found out that it would be next to impossible to find a slab of marble long enough for my island which is 10 feet (it's 45 inches at it's widest point with a radius on one side with an overhang for seating). I guess I will do a marble backsplach instead! I think I've settled on AB honed all over even after reading the complaints about finger prints and I have seen slabs that are 130 inches long. I also have seen the nordic black antiqued in some postings and it looks interesting but I'm unable to find a source close to where I live which is in Northern Ontario, Canada that has any slabs and I'm not sure I would be able to find one long enough. Luckily I live in a city that borders Michigan and have access to suppliers there but they didn't have any Nordic Black. I would like to know if anyone with the antiqued finish really loves it after having had it a while and if anyone would have a close up photo? I should also mention that the main sink is in the island and my cabinets will be BM cloud white. Any comments would be helpful.

My kitchen (not done yet, so no pics) sounds very similar to yours. My cabs are BM white dove, I have honed AB on the perimeter (with a carrara marble subway backsplash!) and decided to put cherry butcher block on the island to break up all of the black. I fell in love with the way it looked when I saw a couple of showroom kitchens with this configuration, and I love it in my own kitchen! John Boos makes beautiful butcher block island tops in several different woods and does custom sizes (they have some guidelines on their website as to pricing). They do make tops that are big enough for your island. As long as you are not planning to cut food directly on the countertops, which would require an oiled finish, the wood can be varnished and would be fine with a sink in it. If you are planning to stick with all granite, it might be nice to choose another contrasting kind to give your eyes a break from all of the black. What about a lighter granite that has a marble-type look to it? That would provide nice contrast as well. I do not have experience w/the antiqued or leathered finishes, but know other GWers do... good luck!

sas95- did you have to seal the seam between the butcher block and quartz? How is this configuration working out for you? We are thinking of doing the same thing to avoid a seam in our stone but there's very little information about adding butcher block to the end of the island!

We did concrete for our kitchen and large island. We poured in place. Ours we left rustic because it fit our style but concrete can be finished in many different looks. The edge forms we used were the square edge but there were other options available. I love ours. We just got our CO today so haven't "used" them yet but they sealed very nicely and any liquid just beads up.

"The rounded edge on the inside of my sink and the two outside side edges cost a total of $150 more." This is why I keep preaching that fabricators should sell this option instead of that gawdawful ugly cheap "pencil" edge at sinks. One chip, and that's "when", not "if", and you've paid me nearly $300.00 to fix it on site. Pulling the faucet and sink, profiling and polishing a proper round over, and reinstalling the sink and faucet to reduce the risk of future chips could be $500.00 or more.

bardzil, no they are not frameless. MaWizz, yes, we like to mix it up and we tend to be "rule breakers" when it comes to design. and the pull-out trash was a cabinetry option, not a revashelf. I will post photos below so you can see how we mixed up the hardware sizes and orientation. This is the 3rd home I have completely remodeled over my many years. Went from 8000 s.f. to 5000 s.f (both historical homes) to this 3000 s.f crazy, not my usual style home on an amazing waterfront lot. We call it "rustic contemporary". But oh, was it ugly. Many here will say, no,no on the busy rustic backsplash with the granite countertops that "should be the star". No subway for this place. Wouldn't change a thing for this particular spot, style and our now emerging empty nest status (3 boys out, one more with a big toe out). Bardzil, as Mom of 4 boys I get the dishwasher thing! Became a big fan of the double drawer dishwasher. Good luck with your remodel!
