Rice Hulls and Manure
Comments (8)First of all I would not plan to till. Instead I would plan to cover the soil with a mulch made from your composted rice hulls and manure. Covering the clay soil will protect the microbes in the soil from sudden changes in temperature and moisture thus allowing them to proliferate and soften your soil. Growing anything in that soil will help. Clover is a very good crop for fixing soil. You cannot put very much manure into a 5-gallon bucket before it is too heavy to carry. I use plastic bags and 1 bucket. I put the bag into the bucket, fill that bag about 1/3 to 2/3 full, tie that bag off, set it aside, and put another bag in the bucket. The only two times you might want to cover the pile are when it has been raining for a week or when it has been so dry that the pile is drying up. It needs moisture all the time to continue the composting process. I don't do ratios or turn my pile, but plenty of people here do. I would simply pile the manure up and cover it with rice hulls or previously finished compost....See MoreAnyone Use Rice Hulls as Soil Amendment?
Comments (15)It is my understanding that they are used a lot for stable bedding, so you might try looking for them at tack and feed stores - organic amendments are often much less expensive when sold for livestock purposes than specifically for garden purposes. There are plenty of race tracks in the Chicago area and the owner of a feed store (apparently there are only two) in the area never heard of "rice hulls." More specifically: The Feed Store 5400 S. Harlem Ave. Summit, IL But, I have bought alfalfa meal from them....See MoreLunch box/bag help
Comments (17)Lots of good ideas for me to agonize over. Thanks. I happened to be at a center with a World Market today, so I checked out their selection. I didn't see one tagged as 'Jane', but I picked one up that seemed like it could work (I think the nalgene will fit and the pocket on the opposite side could hold things outside a cold zone). When they rang it up...it said Blue Jane. :) I'll give it a go tomorrow. I also got some Lunch Blox at Costco. It was a set with two salad and one sandwich, I think. Which is pretty good for what I take. I wasn't sure I was going to keep them, but they were a pretty good deal for what you get. Thanks....See MoreHow much rice can you get? lol shopping experience
Comments (19)I've always loved rice. Loved it (plain white) hot w/ milk & sugar for breakfast when I was a kid but never eat it that way now. I make rice far more often than potatoes so buying multiple pounds at a time is something I do, too. Was always just plain white, brown or wild rice until the last few years...until I tasted Basamati rice. Wow, this is rice? Great stuff. Since then, I've added Jasmine rice which I now prefer to Basamati. Have a container of Arborio rice that I haven't tried yet and one or two other varieties. Have not tried black, red or brown Jasmine rice because I don't recall ever seeing them in the grocery stores here. Not a lot of selection smallish Upper Midwest. Need to put them on a list for the next trip to Woodman's....See More- 15 years ago
